Officer Laurie Reyes and Jenn Lynn join me to talk about how to interact with Law Enforcement when your child has an intellectual and/or developmental disability. It's important to introduce your children to your local officers and make sure they know your child's characteristics. Unfortunately, there may be departments that have not been trained. This doesn't mean they are out for your child. Law Enforcement has a very difficult job and is often responding to situations with very little information. 

In 2005 Laurie Reyes created what is now called the MCPD Autism/IDD (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities)/Alzheimer's, Dementia Outreach Unit. The unit began in response to the increase in calls for "critical at risk" persons but has since grown and provides a broad approach to wandering and general safety through, Education (officers, individuals, caregivers, community), Outreach, Empowerment, Follow-Up, and Response. She has presented/partnered and provided guidance both locally and nationally to name just a few, Department of Justice, National Institute of Health, Capitol Hill (Law Enforcement and Autism) Autism Speaks, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and Pathfinders for Autism.

Jenn Lynn, Executive Director of Upcounty Community Resources, Inc., is passionate about helping all families. She is the mother of a teenage son, Jake, with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Anxiety Disorder, Mood Disorder NOS, and Executive Function Disorder. She's also the founder of Empowering Autism Caregivers®, offering to consult, present, and teach law enforcement about Autism, as well as parenting complex children. Kim Albrecht is the host of the award-winning disability podcast LOMAH. Like many parents of children with disabilities, she and her husband, Tom, had questions about Miranda’s (their oldest daughter) future. Some of those questions include “where will she live”, “who will care for her”, and “where will she find her joy”? Over the years she has shared their journey openly through the LOMAH podcast, blog posts, social media (Instagram), and the occasional newsletter. As she says, you are all “invited to fumble through this journey together”.

Kim and her husband, Tom, started the LOMAH podcast (6) years ago. At the time they were, and I would argue still are, trailblazers. No one else was talking about disability planning. In my opinion, there is still no one talking about disability planning to the depth Kim does. Every year she picks a topic she wants to get deep on, and they all tie directly to what she is trying to do for her daughter, Miranda. Past topics have included education, financial planning, and challenging behaviors. You don't have to listen to the seasons in order. In fact, I encourage you to pick the season that resonates most with what you are experiencing now and start there. Be sure to look at the show notes, they are full of GREAT information.
