This interview was more than I expected. I recorded a video trying to explain health insurance terms, but I realized how little I knew. So I reached out to Jim Crump. We have a conversation about what the terms meant. He reviews the Exchange health plan colors, coinsurance, deductible, copay, and max out-of-pocket.
I ask him about insurance policies for our kids, expecting him to tell me it usually doesn't make sense. His answer surprised me. I had no idea employer plans may often be more expensive to include a spouse and children. Not to mention they may not cover everything you need if your child has complex medical needs or disabilities.
There is a LOT to unpack in this episode. I will be coming back to it myself because even though I was taking notes I still feel like I might have missed something. According to the CDC, 61 million adults in the United States live with a disability. That's over 25% of the population!

Yet only about 2% of all company websites are considered "accessible". This is a HUGE disconnect, and (to me) seems like a LOT of missed opportunities. Having disabilities doesn't make you less likely to need goods or services. According to Statista, 55% of US consumers shop online before making a big purchase. This doesn't scratch the surface of how many others are looking for service providers.

In 2018 the US DOJ released a statement "making it clear that it nonetheless still expects businesses to make their websites accessible" (https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/doj-confirms-websites-are-covered-by-56505/). So why don't more businesses make their website accessible? I think it's because it has not, yet, become law.
I would like to challenge companies and business owners to not wait. I'm asking you, my listeners, to join me in this plea. Let's use our combined purchasing power to encourage an accessible online experience for all of us.

Person-Centered Planning (PCP) feels like it's become a buzzword to me. It seems like every state has a requirement for individuals with Developmental Disabilities to put a PCP in place when receiving services. However, I've found it difficult to pin down what, specifically, a PCP is. The closest I've come is Administration for Community Living (https://acl.gov/programs/consumer-control/person-centered-planning).
So I reached out to Kenzie Clark, Founder of Able Transition Consulting, to see if she would be willing to talk me through what she considers to be a person-centered plan. I was not surprised when she shared she does much more than what States will typically do. In this interview, Kenzie talks us through what it means to build a plan for an individual with a disability.
As a former Special Education Teacher, Kenzie saw the need for transition services and sought out a master’s degree in Secondary Special Education and Transition through the University of Kansas. The transition process and preparing all families and individuals for high-quality lives is her passion. Kenzie's master’s degree provides her with expertise and knowledge regarding all things transition.
While Kenzie attended undergraduate at Appalachian State University, she studied special education and worked with the inclusive post-secondary education program, Scholars with Diverse Abilities (SDAP). This program sparked her interest in transition and the importance of preparing individuals and their families for adulthood.
After teaching in the public school system, Kenzie felt called to open the doors of Able Transition Consulting, LLC to collaborate with and serve families. Able Transition Consulting is happy to be supporting families to ensure successful post-school outcomes and peace of mind. Through building unique and comprehensive person-centered planning, she knows that clients will be able to access high-quality and happy adult lives!
