Diving into the modern abolitionist movement, we spend this hour with abolitionist activist and scholar Ruth Wilson Gilmore, discussing her latest collection of writing called Abolition Geography: Essays Toward Liberation. We get into some of the history of the modern abolitionist movement, and explore what it could mean to rely on community rather than the prison industrial complex to feel safe.

Ruth Wilson Gilmore is a geographer and professor of Earth & Environmental Sciences, and American Studies, and the director of the Center for Place, Culture, and Politics at the City University of New York. She’s also the co-founder of many grassroots organizations including the California Prison Moratorium Project, Critical Resistance, and the Central California Environmental Justice Network.
