There were a lot of problems in the church in Corinth, and we’ve certainly noticed that in recent studies here on Abounding Grace. And today we’ll observe an ignorance, or lack of understanding, concerning spiritual gifts. The same is true today in many believers. The Jewish customs in the apostle Paul’s day were quite a bit different than what we find in today’s culture. For example, they couldn’t uncover their heads in public because it was dishonoring to their husband. While the specifics may be cultural, there are some lessons which are timeless. Should I really go see that movie? Can I have a glass of wine with dinner? You can probably think of a number of questions you wrestle with from time to time, similar to these. As believers, we know that we have an incredible amount of freedom. But there are some things that while they may be permissible, have the potential to stumble a brother or sister in the Lord or even mislead an unbeliever! The Lord has given the Christian a great amount of liberty but as we’re learning in First Corinthians we need to learn how to handle them in a God-glorifying way. Just as it was in the city of Corinth there are a good number of people today planting themselves way to close to sin and the world, all in the name of liberty. The problem is, over time it becomes very easy to cross the line and before you know it you’re referring to sin as a liberty. Whether we realize it or not, we’re easily influenced by the people we’re in close relationship with. Whether that’s our spouse, close friends, or even business partners.That’s why today’s warning from Second Corinthians six is so important for us to hear and receive.
