Welcome to our first Cinema of the Sixties Movie Night!  We start off with the first of the Spaghetti Westerns: Fistful of Dollars starring Clint Eastwood and directed by Sergio Leone.  This movie is a hard break from the honorable heroes of the 1950's when cowboys were like Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, and even Howdy Doody!  Those heroic cowboys could do no wrong, they were the contemporary virtuous knights in shining spurs that always triumphed over evil and rescued the damsels in distress.  The man with no name in the Spaghetti Westerns is not so virtuous, not at all noble, but still a hero worth rooting for nonetheless.  As the world grew up and faced the hard realities of adult life, so did westerns and many other movies too.  If you want to hear us discuss other movies from the 60's, or about the 60's, let us know! In 1966 Ralph Nader published the book "Unsafe at Any Speed" about the design features of the day's automobiles that were particularly dangerous.  Car enthusiasts like Justin curse the day Ralph Nader was born. With the disappearance of the stylish features that we love on old cars, came a less deadly vehicle of the future. Justin and Ty discuss the events that led up to the shooting of a protesting crowd at Kent State University in Ohio May 4, 1970. 4 people died, and 9 more were wounded by the National Guard who came to put down a protest that had already burned the ROTC building on campus and was no longer a peaceful protest as people threw rocks because they didn't want to send any more people to die in Southeast Asia for people that they had nothing to do with.  It was a very sad day, but it taught us a lot of lessons and drew some strange parallels with other events from history, like the Boston Massacre, the battle of Lexington and Concord, even Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter have a familiar echo of what happened at Kent State University.  This episode discusses a lot of adult themes including violence. Why does the entrance to Alcatraz Island say "Indians Welcome" in graffiti? Justin and Ty discuss the events where Native Americans occupied the island of Alcatraz for a year and a half from November 1969 to June 1971.  Indians from many tribes spent time protesting on the island in the middle of San Francisco Bay to get the Federal Government to give surplus lands back to Indians in accordance with the treaty made with the Lakota Sioux in the 1800's.  Even today the Federal Government is not very kind when dealing with complaints from the Native American tribes.  For current example, just look at the Keystone Pipeline today.

Justin and Ty discuss the last of the great Rock Festivals of the 1960's. The Rolling Stones threw together a last minute concert at a speedway in the middle of California.  Even at short notice, they drew a crowd of 300,000 people.  And most of those fans enjoyed a wonderful concert, except for those closest to the stage who were tripping on bad drugs and caught between the excited people behind them, and the Hell's Angels who were hired to guard the stage.  The party got so rowdy that The Grateful Dead decided to leave just before they were supposed to go on stage. 4 people died, 3 by accident, and one by what the court ruled as self-defense, and 4 babies were born that night, but it was also the death of an era, and the birth of something else.  Thanks to mixkit for the use of their song Out of This World in this podcast.
