OFI was founded in 1925 in Heraklion, at a time when sport was becoming an important part of social and cultural life in Crete. From its earliest days, the club was more than just a football team, it was a symbol of unity, identity, and local pride. Built by the people of the city, OFI quickly grew into a multi-sport organization, reflecting a broader vision of athletic participation and community engagement.

One of the most remarkable and lesser-known facts from its early history is that OFI had already formed a women’s volleyball team as early as 1928. At a time when women’s participation in organized sports was extremely limited, this initiative highlights how progressive and inclusive the club was from the very beginning. It shows that OFI was not only following the evolution of sport, but, in some ways, leading it.

Throughout the decades, OFI experienced both great triumphs and difficult periods. From historic achievements and strong presences in Greek competitions to financial struggles and rebuilding phases, the club has continuously fought to stand tall. These ups and downs shaped its character, strengthening the deep bond between the team and its supporters.

Today, OFI represents nearly a century of history, resilience, and passion.

Meet the Grey Heron (Grey Heron)

A tall, elegant bird often called the “silent fisherman” of wetlands.

Can stand completely still for minutes before striking lightning-fast to catch fish.

Wondering why it is at Koules?

Even busy coastal spots attract them because of easy access to fish in shallow waters.

They adapt surprisingly well to urban and harbor environments.

They fly with their neck tucked in an S-shape (unlike storks or cranes).

They are mostly solitary hunters, you’ll usually spot them alone, just like here and they remain active during both day and twilight, especially when the water is calm.

The Ottoman Sebil (Philanthropic Fountain) in Heraklion, Crete, is a historical landmark that was built in 1776 by Hadji Ibrahim Aga. It was a polygonal building with arched windows, under each of which there was a water tap. The fountain was also a place for people to meet and gather.

The Fontana Bembo in Heraklion, Crete, is a historical landmark that was built in 1552 by Capitan Generale Giovanni Matteo Bembo. It was the first fountain to bring spring water to the city of Heraklio. The statue on the fountain is of an unnamed Roman soldier.

I took this video of an amazing Minoan mural created by the talented Chryssa Damianidou. One of the many different works of Heraklion City

Unfortunately, Chryssa left us in 2023, far too early 💔

For me it is too soon to write about her, but I feel like I need to do it sometime

Hard to believe its been 2 months since my last post


September is here and after a strange summer its time to move on with our goals

The ones who tested were lucky. The ones who did not rear should make up some time for themselves


Today, the first of the month, many people were walking at the port
