Two days out of prison, Frank"The Legend" Shamrock started a career of truly legendary proportions. Overcoming years of abuse, group homes and run-ins with the law. Things could have rolled much differently. Following the Warrior"s Code is the only path out.
The Legend was a child in Northern California. He survived abuse, maltreatment and severe trauma. Learning that crime and getting into trouble would get him out of his terrible home environment, he made it his own.
Having nothing left to loose, Frank found himself in prison. He went to Shamrock Martial Arts School two days after his release. He was at the forefront of no-holds barred fighting, which would become Ultimate Fighting. MMA was made for him and he for MMA.
Listen to him lay his life out unflinchingly. The pain and the ultimate. From living in the tool shed as a child. To producing Bipolar Rock N' Roller, the Showtime documentary of friend and renowned WWE and Combat Sports Announcer, Mauro Ranallo.
What he learned from his experience was resilience and how to reinvent himself. Now an entrepreneur, speaker and producer. a A staunch mental health advocate. A portion of his work goes to help Fountain House. A New York City non-profit which practices a specialized form of therapy using the setting of intentional community.
He is the author of, Uncaged:My Life as a MMA Fighter.
You can find all Frank Shamrock at his official website.

Negative thoughts are hard to fight. They are often unquestioned and believed at face value. When looking at the treasures we excavate from our wrecks, we can internalize our failures and hear them as gospel. The zombies keep coming. Let's fight 'em.
TPP and Will are discussing negative thoughts this week. We hope you enjoy the show. Thanks for listening, following and spreading the word. We look forward to going into year three soon. Change management consultant, Joelle Monaco joins us this week. Joelle is a proponent of people first workplaces and communities. An educator by passion, Joelle wants to empower you to end stigma and create the world we all could use.
As a mental health consultant and trainer, Joelle has seen change. Starting out more than fifteen years ago, people wouldn't return her calls. Now they seek her out. They seek her knowledge and wisdom.
We will breakdown the three stigmas we all encounter, self, public and institutional. Find out why Joelle has chosen the turtle as her spirit animal. Her passion is organizational development and building relationships to support operations.
Joelle is a proponent of the people first view of community and workplace. We will spend a third of our lives in our place of work. We now have more than five generations in the workplace together. We tend to not leave our baggage at the door. Following the pandemic team building became a box to check.
Managers are put in positions because they are good at a task. They are often not leaders. They often do not want to be. Community education turned into change management. What is holding us back? Let's talk about it.
You can find Joelle Monaco at Joelle Monaco Consulting. She is also the Director of Outreach and Business Engagement for the Mental Health Association of NY State (MHANYS).

Catastrophizing, is assuming the worst case scenario is going to happen. You believe you're stuck, out of options. When you feel you've reached your limit and your tools don't seem to work. Where do you go? Healing can be daunting.
We often lose focus and doubt ourselves when we feel overwhelmed. Questioning our ability, our process. We need to have a utility tool with multiple items. Yet you fumble accessing the belt.
Life unfolds at pace we often do not appreciate. Suffering is optional. Buddhism shows us that we create a lot of our own problems. Cut yourself free and give yourself a break. Show yourself some grace. And be grateful for the experience.
Thanks for listening to Above Ground Podcast. We appreciate it when you leave a review, share our content and interact with us. We appreciate meeting everyone in our community as well. We are quickly approaching three years of service. Thank you for making that possible. Here is where you can find us. Until next week, be WELL.

Memoir (Despair & Mayhem) [feat. Kevin Maloney] - Single by Will Foley
https://music.apple.com/us/album/memoir-despair-mayhem-feat-kevin-maloney-single/1569777715
Complex post traumatic stress disorder is much like PTSD. CPTSD is a rather new diagnosis. Similar to PTSD, but differing in how it formulates. Instead of one traumatic event, CPTSD occurs with prolonged exposure to repeated physical, sexual or emotional abuse, neglect or being a prisoner of war. As you can tell It's Complicated.
Though it can happen to anyone who has suffered prolonged trauma, it is more often seen in individuals who were abused by someone they thought they could trust. Such as a caregiver, parent or protector.
One of the main differences is that CPTSD reshapes not only a view of self, but the world as a whole. A trauma is a wound, injury or shock. We all have different tolerance levels and what might be traumatic for some, doesn't register for others.
It often starts in childhood. A prolonged feeling or lack of escape and ability to change it. It truly changes you to the core. CPTSD is complicated to diagnose and does not have its own DSM listing. The covering of such trauma is one that differentiates it from PTSD and makes it all the more complicated.
Hope we were able to help you understand CPTSD a bit more. Please seek help if you are in a dangerous situation. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. The NY State Hotline for Child Abuse and Maltreatment is 1-800-342-3720. If you see something say something. Be the voice for others who cannot.

Laura DaPolito is a 5-1-8 Licensed Clinical Social Worker and half of the dynamic duo that owns Nippertown. She is an energy goes in person with lots of experience working with trauma. Laura was called to this work. Laura is a HOPE dealer and a HEALER.
Laura D. comes from a legacy of healing. She has a 25 year career and counting. Her initial work began with working in the violence against women field. During her work in the domestic violence shelters she fell in love with working with children. She works for an innovative 5-1-8 school district. This has allowed her to start a day treatment program for children with mental illness and outpatient work with their families.
Laura believes hope is the ultimate tool to heal. She answered her calling. Coming from a long line of healers. Connection to others is a driving force, not only in her work, but in her life.
Her love for animals almost led her to be a veterinarian. A period of complicated grief and depression led her to meet a group of wonderful healers and forever changed her path. We are forever grateful.
Thanks to Laura for our wonderful conversation. Please listen to her wonderful story.

Memoir (Despair & Mayhem) [feat. Kevin Maloney] - Single by Will Foley

Vulnerability is finding the courage to expose oneself's weakness or injury despite the possibility of emotional or physical attack or harm. We have to allow ourselves to be seen despite the chance of being viewed negatively. We fear that our worst makes us unworthy, unlovable and separate. Time to shed the armor and get real.
We are wired for struggle. Shame, fear and worthiness often keep us from living our best lives and revealing our true, authentic selves. To be vulnerable is to love. To be vulnerable is true power.
We want to thank everyone who responded to our question of what's your definition of vulnerability? Vulnerability is a choice. You can learn how to be more vulnerable. Without a willingness nothing is possible. Take a deep breath and step into the unknown.
Special thanks to Katie(75), Valéry Brosseau(86), Lisa Scott(110), Makayla's(134) mom Heather, Angela "the Shark Whisperer",Anonymous listener, Axton and Autumn. Janneke, Dr. A the Misfit Therapist and Kara Stein-Conaway.

The importance of relationships to our mental health and the importance of our mental health to our relationships cannot be understated. Everything affects everything else. We can all use help navigating the Roadmap to Relationships.
Chelsea Wakefield PhD, LCSW is a speaker, podcaster, teacher and author. She is employed by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at the Psychiatric Research Institute. She has written three books. Love in the Time of Covid is her podcast. Chelsea is our guest this week.
Self awareness and our ability to understand what we bring in, is a great place to start looking at how we navigate our relationships. Relationships have two dimensions. We start with the personal work we do and then how we show up. Communication is a very important interpersonal skill. But, where we communicate from, is important to know. It gives us insight to how we communicate.
Negative dynamics are the enemy to a good relationship not your partner. We are often reacting to one another, rather than creating and responding to one another.
The why in life is incredibly important to us creating a vision. We need role models, who can help us see a path forward. We all have areas of struggle. We are who we are. We can learn, love, grow and experience life with an open heart.
Committing to a person is not enough. We need to commit to the process. Person, process and presence. Curiosity is a necessity to identifying needs, wants and desires. Begin within. Communication needs kindness. Difficult conversations take tact. Compassion helps us be empathetic to our partners needs and wants. Allowing for open dialog in a safe space. Co-creativity will only happen after the first four criteria are met. We need an exit ramp, off of the conflict highway.
Chelsea is the author of three books, Negotiating the Inner Peace Treaty, In Search of Aphrodite, and Labyrinth of Love.
Her website is ChelseaWakefield.com
Her podcast is called Love in the Time of Covid.
Thanks for listening.
Until next time, be Well, be Safe, be ABOVE...
Triggers are often subconscious alarms, piercing your ears like Mötörhead. Street signs along the path of the walk of self knowledge. They are residue of past lives and experiences. They are mallets that crack the freedom bell and let in the light. This has been your trigger warning.
What is up everyone? Welcome to episode 139 of AGP. This week Will & TPP throw down voices surrounding triggers. What yjey experience and just how pesky those 'lil buggers are to exterminate from your mental house.
Triggers aren't all bad or dangerous. UNLESS! You don't heed the understanding and put in your periphery. If used correctly, they can be trained allies and unlock your next level of Jedi force and self-mastery.
What do triggers mean? What truth bombs are they looking to detonate? Can you sit in the uncomfortableness? Not turn away from looking at your dark side.
Do you have the strength to ask the difficult questions? Remember, growth is just outside your comfort zone. It's time to get dirty, cry ugly, scream profusely, and come out the other side.
We chat about some of our triggers. We mention three important books on this pod. The Wisdom of Sundays by Oprah, The Seat of the Soul, by Gary Zukav and the Untethered Soul by Michael Singer. We talk about how road rage is not about the one who cut you off in traffic. It's about the one that cut you off from life. It's an inside job that only you can perform.
We thank you for listening, following, sharing, liking and returning. Follow any of our links below to find us. If you would like to contribute you can Buy Will & Tim a Coffee.
