About Abraham Lincoln: A Commemoration
From the publisher's feed
Abraham Lincoln: A Commemoration is a powerful collection of poems, speeches, essays, and personal accounts honoring the life and legacy of the sixteenth president of the United States. Prepared to…
mark the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s assassination, the volume brings together some of the most moving words written about his character, leadership, death, and lasting influence.
The collection includes Walt Whitman’s celebrated poems “O Captain! My Captain!” and “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d,” alongside tributes by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Frederick Douglass, Charles Sumner, George Bancroft, and William Cullen Bryant. It also presents the remarkable testimony of Dr. Charles A. Leale, one of the physicians who attended Lincoln during his final hours, as well as speeches delivered before the British Parliament following the president’s death.
Completing the commemoration are three of Lincoln’s most important works: the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, and his Second Inaugural Address. Together, these writings reveal the grief felt across nations while preserving Lincoln’s own vision of liberty, equality, national unity, and reconciliation.
Both a historical record and a literary tribute, this collection offers a thoughtful portrait of a leader whose words and ideals continue to shape the meaning of American democracy.
