As a consultant, Jigisha Patel works with organizations committed to research integrity to manage complex research integrity issues (such as paper mills) and develop preventative strategies to reduce the risk of research and publication misconduct.

As a trainer, she provides training for editors and research integrity teams on the management of research integrity issues. Her CPD certified Research Integrity Strategy Foundations Course is for new editors and publishing staff with responsibility for managing research misconduct. The course covers the common pitfalls of managing misconduct issues, how to avoid them, and how to streamline your processes.

As a current elected member of COPE Council, she aims to help the organizations she works with adhere to COPE guidance.

Ludmilla Figueiredo is a research data and code curator coming from a background in ecology and conservational biodiversity. In this episode, she talks with Jo about the benefits that coding has in open science.

Ludmilla Figueiredo has completed a postdoc studying the payment of extinction debts at the Ecosystem modeling group of the University of Würzburg in Germany, and, since March 2022, works as a data and code curator at the Data and Code Unit of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. Among her duties, she has to support researchers in the application of Open Science and FAIR principles, sourcing from her participation in the “Freies Wissen” Open Science Fellows program (2020/2021, Wikimedia Deutschland).

Chris Emezue is a researcher and the founder of Lanfrica, an online resource centre that catalogues, archives and links African language resources in order to mitigate the difficulty encountered in discovering African works.

His research areas of interest include machine/deep learning, reinforcement learning (for games and neural machine translation), natural language processing (speech and language processing).

Chris is also a Machine Learning Researcher in NLP. As an African NLP researcher, he is working to promote African languages in Speech and Language Processing.

Multilingualism is a skill that most researchers have in international research consortia and groups and also need in order to be able to disseminate their findings through scholarly publishing. However, the difficulties in learning another language and deficiencies like grammar and spelling issues often cause challenges and backlashes to non-English native speakers. Avi Staiman and Jo share some of their experiences and observations made, as well as resources and best practices to foster a global and multilingual research environment. Mental health is too often ignored, and although it is talked about more openly now and especially since the pandemic, many of us pay lip service to that ethos, and when it comes to looking after ourselves, it’s business as usual. Appreciating others’ challenges is much easier to do than acknowledging our own, and yet the best thing we can do to help ourselves is to be real, honest, and pay attention to our feelings, habits, thoughts, and what our body is telling us.
