Adam Rapoport, MD, MHSc, joins us to discuss the history of residential hospice and palliative care, why palliative care should be incorporated into all areas of healthcare, how being genuinely human is fundamental to building meaningful relationships with patients, and so much more!

Dr. Adam Rapoport is a general pediatrician with a Masters in Bioethics. He is an Associate Professor in both the Departments of Paediatrics, and Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, as well as a Project Investigator in the Child Health and Evaluative Sciences Program at the SickKids Research Institute. In 2011, he became the first Medical Director of the Paediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT), the palliative care service at SickKids. In 2013, he became Medical Director at Toronto’s first pediatric residential hospice – Emily’s House. His academic work focuses on the intersection of his 3 primary interests: paediatrics, palliative care, and ethics.

Saadia Sediqzadah, MD joins us to discuss her personal connection to her research and practice, the role of activism in medicine, decision science and how it affects clinical practice, stigma in mental health, and so much more!

Dr. Saadia Sediqzadah is a PGY-5 Psychiatry resident at the University of Toronto, with a strong interest in psychotic illnesses. She recently graduated with a Science Master’s in Health Policy and Management at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. She also completed an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Fellowship at Harvard. She proudly identifies as a daughter of Afghan refugees and as a first-generation Canadian. When she isn’t in clinic, she can be found biking around the city, coffee shop hopping, or dancing to Lizzo.

Social worker and psychotherapist, Debbie Berlin joins us to discuss her trajectory into social work, how and why she decided to share her personal story of mental health, the importance of honesty, the inspirational work of palliative care, and so much more!

Debbie has practised as a social worker and psychotherapist for more than 25 years in women’s shelters and community-based services. For 16 years she worked with children and families in the stem-cell transplant and pediatric brain tumour programs at SickKids. She has facilitated groups for individuals with disordered eating and body image issues for over 20 years at Sheena’s Place, where she has acted as Executive Director for the past 5 years. She is also an adjunct lecturer at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto. In 2014, Debbie became a founder of Neshama Hospice. When built, Neshama Hospice will be Canada’s first hospice residence based on Jewish values and located in North York, Ontario. Debbie actively engages in public speaking and has presented at numerous conferences including TEDx Toronto in 2013.

Julia Hanigsberg joined Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital as its President and CEO in 2015. She has spent her career in government, post-secondary education and healthcare as a champion for cultural transformation, innovation, excellence, and equity. At Holland Bloorview, she led the development of the No Boundaries strategy, expanded clinical services, launched the social justice campaign Dear Everybody, and championed an ambitious growth plan for the Bloorview Research Institute. She is a founding member of the Kids Health Alliance and the Chair of the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario.

Physician and neonatologist Paige Church joins us to discuss how her personal challenges, including experiences of failure, shaped her education and career, lessons learned from growing up in the health care system, her experience of “coming out” as having Spina Bifida, not letting other people’s narratives define you, and so much more! 

Paige Church, MD is based in Toronto, Ontario. She is a graduate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Her pediatrics training was completed at the University of Chicago, focusing on inner-city medicine and complex care. She then undertook a combined fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and Developmental Behavioural Paediatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. She is the first pediatrician in North America to have completed this combined sub-specialty training. Dr. Church came to Toronto in 2008 and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto. She is currently on staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre as a staff neonatologist and is a consulting developmental behavioural pediatrician at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. She is the director of the Neonatal Follow Up Clinic at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
