Celebrating International Accordion Day 2026!

Three years before the big 1829–2029 Bicentennial

Who knows what we’ll do for that? But tonight’s episode features all songs and tunes in the theme of “Three”. In anticipation of that big date in 2029.

I guess it’s Accordion Year in Germany already this year? They may be celebrating early, or might have wanted to push a nationalist narrative about other inventors who contributed along the way. Christian Buschmann gets attention without much evidence to back it up.

But Cyrill Demian’s 1829 patent in Vienna clearly says “Accordion” so it’s an easy birth-certificate to point to and we’re going with it.

Really, the most important innovation was back in the late 1700s when a few German organ builders working in Copenhagen and St. Petersburg developed the “Western” free reed riveted on top of a separate plate. Those guys, Christian Gottlieb Kratzenstein (who presented his “speech machine” in St Petersburg in 1780) and the unfortunately multiple-spelling’ed Franz Kirsnick / Kirshnick, Kirschnick, Kirschnigk, are ones who probably deserve to be celebrated as much or more than anybody else.

That break from thousands of years of South East Asian free reed traditions gives the young Western reed organs, harmonicas and accordions their core difference. Everything after that was incremental. But Demian’s 1829 patent with the name on it is a better coming-out party than most instruments can claim.
