Genius is described as “exceptional intellectual or creative power or other natural ability”. Another definition says a genius is “a person who is exceptionally intelligent or creative, either generally or in some particular respect”. With the definition explaining what & who a genius is, who determines who gets to wear the label? Is there a genius-meter that measures one’s intelligence or creativity to confirm if it meets the standard of genius? Nope. Or at least not that us on sale at Walmart, Costco or Target. And we know for certain if Amazon doesn’t sell it, it hasn’t been created. So with that in mind, the subjectivity of genius is in the minds of those who care to ponder to whom the title belongs. In terms of musicality, some may say Michael Jackson, Prince & Stevie Wonder are classified as genius without a doubt. Others may include names of other musicians from other genres of music, but at the end of the day, it’s all a matter of opinion. Now of course there has to be some qualifying criteria to avoid a debate. And here the question comes again…who determines the criteria? When considering Kanye West, some Jay argue the genius tag is thrown around undeservingly. Others may counter and make claim that 11 studio albums, 2 live albums, 1 compilation albums, and 2 collaborative albums , in addition to countless producer credits, and a clothing and sneaker empire, Yeezy, Ye, Donda’s son, Mr.West or any other moniker you prefer to attach to him, is certainly in the runnings of being on the Mount Rushmore of musical geniuses. But that’s our opinion. After the loss of his mother, facing psychological battles, familial strife and having the world recently having the opportunity to view the last 20 years of his life, Kanye is certainly a conversation to be had.
