  • Episode 50 - Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1:03:36)
We open the holiday travel season with the 20th anniversary of a John Hughes mid-80's classic, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" with our returning guest, the Professional Asshole.
We get into a very dated movie that could not be made today as most of the problems that arise have since been solved by technology.
Still, a kind of fun movie that may be worth a watch every few years.
Check out our guests previous appearance where we talked about "3:10 to Yuma" at actualanarchy.com/37
The show notes page for this episode can be found at actualanarchy.com/50
Happy holidays everyone, and we wish you safe travels.
    Presented by Actual Anarchy
Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective.
We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter.
We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film.
The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film.
We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests.

  • Episode 49 - Inequality For All (1:20:27)
Esoteric Entity joins us to discuss the Robert Reich's "Inequality For All" - a leftist-propaganda puff-piece that caters to the uninformed and lowest common denominator for economic analysis.
Described on Amazon, where it has over a thousand GLOWING reviews as:
"A passionate argument on behalf of the middle class, Inequality for All features Robert Reich–professor, best-selling author, and Clinton cabinet member–as he demonstrates how the widening income gap has a devastating impact on the American economy. The film is an intimate portrait of a man whose lifelong goal remains protecting those who are unable to protect themselves. Through his singular perspective, Reich explains how the massive consolidation of wealth by a precious few threatens the viability of the American workforce and the foundation of democracy itself. In this Inconvenient Truth for the economy, Reich uses humor and a wide array of facts to explain how the issue of economic inequality affects each and every one of us."
I'm sure you'll find that we disagree with this assessment and the Amazon reviews.

  • Episode 48 - The Shining (1:58:12)
Heeeeeeeere's Johnny! We bring back two former guests to tag-team on the Kubrick classic, the Shining. Doc Brown from our Episode 41 on It, and Patrick MacFarlane of the Liberty Weekly Podcast and our Episode 35 on Rogue One join us in the Gold Room to share a few drinks with Lloyd - on the house of course.
This was to be our Halloween special, but schedules kept getting pushed due to illness, contracts and obligations to employers.
The fact that there is so much ambiguity built into the movie, that it can be debated for decades after is a testament to how well made this film is. This should be a film that satisfies Robert’s desire in a story to have tension and struggle within the narrative. We have genuine unease and sense of dread for the character - despite the fact they we “know” going into it that Jack does go crazy and attempts to murder his family with an axe.

  • Episode 45 - Ghost and The Darkness (1:40:52)
We go lion-hunting in Tsavo with Country Sam of the Living Country in the City Podcast and talk the 1996 Val Kilmer flick, the Ghost and the Darkness. This is our third Kilmer movie we've done, and second in a row - so one might think we have a Val-fetish, and you would be correct. It won't be the last one we do with him in it.
In 1896, a construction engineer from the British Army, J.H. Patterson (Kilmer) is sent to build a railway bridge across Uganda's Tsavo River for the British East African Railway. Soon after he arrives, workmen begin to disappear at night from their tents never to be seen alive again. The engineer soon discovers that a pair of man-eating lions are stalking around the bridge and campsites, killing the workmen for food. He tries a number of different methods to get rid of them, but the beasts always seem to know what Patterson is doing and avoid being shot. After 30 men have been killed Patterson's boss recruits a hunter, Charles Remington (Douglas) to hunt down and destroy the lions.
The Tsavo Man-Eaters were a pair of man-eating Tsavo lions responsible for the deaths of a number of construction workers on the Kenya-Uganda Railway from March through December 1898. The significance of this pair of lions was their unusual behavior, such as the number of men killed and the manner of the attacks.

  • Episode 42 - The Dark Knight Rises (1:05:40)
Our Batman man from Adelaide, Australia, Shaheen the Anarcap, joins us once again to discuss the 3rd installment of the Christopher Nolan Ba-trilogy:  The Dark Knight Rises.  Bane is the commie villain, and Cat Woman is the commie ally in this lengthy closing chapter on Christian Bale's Batman.
When The Dark Knight Rises opens, Batman is in self-imposed exile. It’s been eight years since he vanished into the night, turned sudden fugitive by accepting the blame for the death of Harvey Dent. For a time the lie worked. Criminal activity in Gotham City ceased, crushed by the anti-crime act. However, the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda is changing everything. Even more dangerous is the emergence of a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham are driving the reluctant superhero out of retirement. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for the evil awaiting him.
Shaheen always has a fun and interesting take on all things Bat. You can bat-signal him on the Twitterz at @ElcoAlFares
    Google Description:
It has been eight years since Batman (Christian Bale), in collusion with Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman), vanished into the night. Assuming responsibility for the death of Harvey Dent, Batman sacrificed everything for what he and Gordon hoped would be the greater good. However, the arrival of a cunning cat burglar (Anne Hathaway) and a merciless terrorist named Bane (Tom Hardy) force Batman out of exile and into a battle he may not be able to win.

About Actual Anarchy Podcast - AnCap Movie Reviews from a Rothbardian Perspective

From the publisher's feed

In the spirit of the great “Mister First Nighter”, Murray Rothbard’s movie critic review pen name, Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Anarcho-Capitalist perspective.
