Twenty-six percent of the U.S. population live each day with a disability. We believe that disability, and the differences people with disabilities bring to the fabric of our culture, should be celebrated and embraced. People with disabilities have the same needs, desires, and talents as anyone and should have equal access to a full life.
In celebration of the 30th ADA anniversary, ADA Live! is featuring a monthly theme and for March, the theme is Disability Awareness. Explore and learn more with the ADA Anniversary Tool Kit at ADAanniversary.org

  • Episode 77: Making Our Elections Accessible: Equal Access for Voters with Disabilities
For Additional information and Transcript visit www.adalive.org/episode77
One of the most important rights of United States citizens is the right to vote. Although U.S. citizens over the age of 18 cannot be denied the right to vote, regardless of race, religion, sex, disability, or sexual orientation; people with disabilities are at risk of exclusion from this core aspect of citizenship (Source: The White House: Elections & Voting).
Join us for this episode of ADA Live! as we discuss voting access for people with disabilities with Jennifer Levin, Senior Attorney with Disability Law Colorado. Ms. Levin will share the role of Protection and Advocacy in ensuring equal access and, specifically, the Protection and Advocacy for Voting Access (PAVA) initiative. Federal laws regarding voting access, and the protections they provide, will be discussed as well as best practices and policies some states have adopted to ensure equal access for all voters.
By voting, citizens are participating in the democratic process. Citizens vote for leaders to represent them and their ideas, and the leaders support the citizens' interests. As we move closer to the 2020 state primaries and Presidential election, the Southeast ADA Center and the ADA National Network, along with our national, regional and state partners, are focusing on voting access. This topic corresponds to the themes celebrating the 30th ADA anniversary.

  • Episode 75: Supported Decision-Making: From Justice for Jenny to Justice for All!
Before her rights were taken away, Jenny Hatch had her own apartment, worked, spent time with friends, and went to a church of her choice. After a court ordered her into guardianship, Ms. Hatch found herself in a group home against her will with her cell phone and laptop taken away, cut off from her friends and not allowed to go to her job and church.
On this episode of ADA Live!, Jonathan Martinis discusses his new book,” Supported Decision-Making: From Justice for Jenny to Justice for All!” Martinis, along with Dr. Peter Blanck, tells Jenny’s story including how she lost her rights under guardianship and how she won them back when she showed the court that she uses Supported Decision-Making (SDM) to make her own decisions with help from people she trusts. They also show how you can use SDM in your life, with family members, or people you support, including in programs like Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Person Centered Planning.
In 2019, the National Council on Disability (NCD) reported that between 45% and 55% of people with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disability (ID/DD) are under some form of guardianship. “Supported Decision-Making: From Justice for Jenny to Justice for All!” is a practical guide for family members, human service professionals, and people in or facing guardianship. Martinis and Blanck hope that people with disabilities and their families, friends, and professionals will use this book to help develop customized Supported Decision-Making (SDM) plans that protect the rights of the individual with a disability and empower them to make their own decisions.

It adopts a broad view of persons with disabilities and reaffirms that all persons with disabilities must enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms. It clarifies and qualifies how all human rights apply to persons with disabilities. The CRPD also identifies areas where adaptations have to be made for persons with disabilities to effectively exercise their rights, areas where their rights have been violated, and areas where protection of rights must be reinforced. Matters in regard to implementation of the CRPD are considered in the COSP.
