February 14, 2020Yall Yall Teaching becomes the teacherToday I had the pleasure of speaking with Y’all Y'all about fear and the first day teaching a class for adults learning English as a second language. Y’all Y’all’s story amazed me so much because he went from not doing well in his own college studies to washing dishes and was fortunate to land a job eventually teaching immigrants English as a second language… people who have come to the USA in search of a better life for themselves and their families and one giant determining factor of climbing the social economic ladder is learning how to speak english. It could mean the difference of getting on the correct bus to get to work or being able to communicate with a doctor, lawyer or future employer… in essence it can mean the world. But Y’all Y’all had so much anxiety on his first day that he was sweating profusely and the entire class knew he was scared of teaching. He had to deal with self defeating thoughts like “am i good enough” or “am I an imposter”? thoughts that could keep us from reaching our best selves… but Y’all Y’all was determined to teach the class and he walked away from the experience with having made some amazing connections with new people who valued his support and willingness to show up and teach them and over all I believe he has made the world a better place in the process. He would tell you, “just don’t over think it”. February 13, 2020Chris Saying YesToday i had the pleasure of speaking with Chris about feeling social anxiety when he was younger, around the time of high school and college. Chris found it scary to talk to strangers and make friends early on but there came a time when he was sitting in his room alone and he thought to himself that he was going to make a change… a big change and he would put himself out into the world more and start saying YES to life’s opportunities. He knew deep down that he had a ton of value inside to offer if he was given the chance to meet more people. Chris began to go to every event that he could signup for and any time someone invited him to do something he would accept the invitation — his old self might shy away but this new self was going to make an effort and see who in the world he could meet. It wasn’t long before people started recognizing Chris around campus and coming up to him to say hi. What an amazing feeling and saying Yes to our fears!
