The price of reparations may be great, but a debt is owed and must be paid. The ethical claim for reparations at least equals that of any other government program. America is a rich country, and if the will exists, the coinage can be found.

Saturday was Armed Forces Day in Myanmar, and the ruling generals marked it with the slaughter of over 100 people, including a five-year-old and other children, at pro-democracy protests across the nation.

It was the worst bloodshed since a coup that began on 1 February. State media had issued a warning on Friday evening, saying that the largely peaceful protesters risked being shot “in the head and back”.

Despite that, crowds poured on to the streets of Yangon, Mandalay and other towns, where security forces gunned them down with impunity. A one-year-old was reportedly also hit in the eye with a rubber bullet.

Along with the benefits of social media, risks and negative consequences can arise.  Too much social media use can result in lower interaction with family, friends, or co-workers.  Exposure to inappropriate content like violence and pornography is highly possible without the use of monitoring and parental control applications.  Inappropriate behavior such as bullying, slander, or sending/posting risky pictures can happen because a social media user has a false sense of security behind the screen.  Often people don’t consider that their digital footprint can last forever.

World War II has taught many people different things.

Some learnt about the willpower of humans and what it means when one’s homeland is invaded.

Others discovered humanity’s limitations, such as whether one can push their moral boundaries to serve their country despite the pressure of their own values.

Personally, the lesson I take away from that historical event is that you – or a nation - can still wear your scars proudly and learn to shake your enemy’s hand.
