Add More Mouse - A Disney Beginner’s Podcast

Dave and Mike are back with the second episode of their “Fact and Fiction” miniseries which looks at some of Disney’s movies that were “based on a true story” to determine just how close (or far) from reality they were. This time we’re looking at one of Dave’s childhood favorites: Iron Will! Ever wanted to know about dog sledding and whether it’s cinematic portrayal is realistic or not? No? Well too bad, baby, because that’s what we’re talking about! We did some research, and we’ll give you all the facts you never knew you wanted to know about the 1917 Red River Dogsled Contest. Honestly I can’t even remember if that’s the right name of the race, but I’m tired. The boys also talk about their upcoming trip to the parks. Enjoy!

Oh snap! It’s the Add More Mouse podcast and we’re starting a brand new miniseries! Since the beginning of the Disney company, the storytellers there have often looked to real events and people to base projects on, such as Davey Crocket, any of the 100 sports movies Disney has put out, or all the way back to Walt’s own project True-Life Adventures. But in Hollywood, real events often do not follow a traditional film’s three act structure, so writers and directors change the real stories in order to make them “more cinematic,” often while giving the audience a skewed idea of what really happened. We start our “Fact and Fiction” miniseries with 1995’s Pocahontas, the 33rd Animated Classic released by the studio. Your hosts dig into the burning questions audiences might have after seeing this film: Was Pocahontas real? Was her best friend a hummingbird? Did trees talk to people a few hundred years ago? The answers may (not) surprise you!

Well, it’s still winter time, and your hosts Dave and Mike both live in Ohio where it is cold, snowy, icy, windy, and grey...so what better time to sit down and fantasize about hanging out at Walt Disney World? On this episode of the Add More Mouse podcast, your hosts each pick three things they love to do when they’re at the parks with the caveat that these are not attractions or rides. Mike’s take place in the parks, and Dave’s take place outside of the parks, and honestly we don’t know if this will help you plan your next trip, we were just desperate to talk about warm weather activities. It did the trick and brightened our spirits, so here’s hoping it works for you, too!

Oh man, this is a good one! On today’s episode Dave interviews legendary Disney podcaster Matt Parrish of The 3028 and Wedway Radio shows! What? It’s like we’re a real podcast! The two discuss the early days of podcasting, changes in the Disney parks over the years, and compare the Covid-19 era to the time period immediately following 9/11, an era in the parks that Matt is very familiar with. Dave interviews Karen Shriner, a professional singer and actor who has worked as a Cast Member for both Walt Disney World and the Disney Cruise Line for over 14 years. In honor of the holiday season, they discuss Karen’s history of performing for Disney at the holidays, including her role in the annual Candlelight Processional. Dave also asks tons of questions about how she keeps her voice in shape when she’s singing all day everyday, and they discuss some of the Disney magic Karen has gotten to see up close. They also touch on the state of the parks in 2020 and the role live performance must continue to play in the future as the world plans to rebound from the global pandemic. It’s Christmas! Almost! In order to try to block out the end of this legendarily garbage year, Dave and Mike are focusing on Disney holiday topics for the whole month of December. In this episode, the boys close out their miniseries looking at Disney sequels and segue into whatever holiday magic they can scrounge from what remains of 2020 by looking at the first sequel to the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast - which happens to be an entry into Disney’s secular Christmas canon. Is it good? Why is the villain the only CGI character? Why is chip’s mom so old? Is this Tim Curry’s greatest performance? Have we lost our minds? We must be, since we originally uploaded a version that wasn’t finished being edited! We’re professionals!

This time, we take a break from our Disney sequels miniseries to celebrate Mike’s favorite holiday: Halloween. The boys do this by discussing the 1993 Bette Midler cult classic Hocus Pocus, a film Mike grew up with and Dave has just watched for the first time. Predictably, their opinions of the film differ. Along the way they discuss some Disney history in regards to the Eisner era, Bette Midler and the advent of Touchstone Pictures, and fall into some fairly predictable Disney trivia rabbit holes as well. They also discuss which Disney Halloween costumes they have forced their respective pets and children into.
