Addicted to Addicts: Survival 101 – Educators’ Roles in Prevention and Education of Substance Abuse and Bad Choices

Listen Later

This week’s show is all about possibilities.  The discussion focuses on the role of educators, families, communities, when it comes to preventing and educating our young people about substance abuse and life choices.
This week Denise interviews Chris McDuffie, who is CEO and Founder of Turning Point Addiction and Recovery Services and a retired HS principal with two Masters degrees from Fordham University. He is a Registered Recovery Worker and an active member of  the Independent Educational Consultants Association. Chris has spent the last 25+ years working with parents, students, and school administrators in K-college education and as a drug and alcohol counselor working with addicts in recovery. Chris has worked as an educator in both private, public and charter schools in three states: NY, NJ, and CA. Chris and his wife have been married for 21 years, they have a son in college and a daughter in high school.
Chris shares with us his perspective from his many years working with teens, young adults, and adults.  Listen and you will hear some of the things we can do for our communities if we choose. Also, the discussion touches on certain questions to ask ourselves such as ” For parents choosing to allow their child to drink or smoke pot: “Be aware of the slippery slope” and “Is this use positively or negatively affecting their health, brain development, and social development?” and “Are you aware of the signs of addiction to look out for?
Chris suggests some reading to give us more food for thought.  (Mindset by Carol Dweck, Nurture Shock by Pro Bronson and Ashley Merryman, and Excellent Sheep by William Deresiewicz).
I think we can all agree that prevention is a better use of time and funds than “reacting to abuse, overdose, truancy, family trauma, etc”.
Let’s get educated and educate!
