Any one of us has the possibility of having to go to the Emergency Room at a hospital for one reason or another. An addict or alcoholic has even a greater possibility that this might happen to them. We, as loved ones, are often in denial about the severity of our addict’s addictions but need to be proactive, just in case. This week Denise interviews Dr. Roneet Lev, the director of operations of the Scripps Mercy Emergency Department in San Diego. Dr. Lev has been practicing medicine at the hospital since 1993, was board certified in Emergency Medicine in 1995 and recertified in 2005. She chairs the Emergency Medicine Oversight Commission with the San Diego County Medical Society, uniting all 19 emergency departments in San Diego to improve emergency care for the community. Denise talks to Dr. Lev about how things have changed over her 20 years in the ER, what happens when we or our loved ones first get to the ER, and what we as loved ones can do to help make the experience effective and efficient for everyone. We know it is an emotional time and we also know how helpless and out of control we feel when this kind of thing happens. Let’s be prepared and know that we can do something to help.
