Addictions Is there more than one way to manage and treat addiction? This week Denise speaks with Dr. Michler Bishop at the Albert Ellis Institute in New York City about this topic. Dr. F. Michler Bishop is Director of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services at the Albert Ellis Institute in New York City, where for over twenty years he worked closely with Dr. Ellis, running groups and workshops together. He is author of Managing Addictions: Cognitive, Emotive and Behavioral Techniques and the chapter on alcohol abuse in The Handbook of Assessment, Conceptualization, and Treatment. Two other chapters, one on the treatment of couples in which addictions are an issue and another focused on the treatment of addictions in correctional settings, are in press. Dr. Bishop advocates for an integrative, goal-focused approach, incorporating a variety of research-based treatment options. Dr. Bishop is past president of the Division of Addictions of the New York State Psychological Association and the Addictive Behaviors Special Interest Group of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. As national vice president of SMART Recovery® for over twenty years, he was instrumental in the development of SMART Recovery’s Four-Point Program and SMART Recovery Therapy. He has conducted numerous workshops on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and SMART Recovery in the United States and overseas, most recently in Ankara, Turkey and Abeokuta, Nigeria. At the Institute, he sees clients with a wide variety of problems, including anxiety and mood disorders, impulse control disorders (addictions and ocd), and relationship issues.
