How often I hear this (not my kid!) when talking about the prevalence of addiction in young people. I was one of these parents before my son began his spiral into his prescription drug and heroin addiction. It is important to know these days that with the growth of prescription drug misuse and abuse, and these drugs found in virtually every home in the US, this is not just someone else’s problem any more. With legalization of marijuana sometimes the serious consequences to a young person’s brain (with any of these drugs) is not considered wholeheartedly.
This week I speak with a mom and her 16 year old high school daughter. I tried to find a “typical” mom and daughter who aren’t involved in the drug scene nor would anyone believe would know much about it. I wanted to know about their awareness to the problems in the high school, how much people actually talked about it, and just what kind of drug education is offered. I hope this will encourage you parents out there to talk to your kids and ask them more questions. It is not only what you see on the news! I hope, too, it will encourage all involved with a child in school or in the running of schools to help start the conversation about more awareness and education.
