يزعم بعض المؤرخين أن عيد الأم قد بدأ عند الأغريق في إحتفالات الربيع ، و كانت هذه الإحتفالات مهداة إلى

الإله الأم (ريا) وفي روما القديمة

كان هناك احتفال مشابه لهذه الاحتفالات كان لعبادة أو تبجيل (سيبل) وهذه الاحتفالات الدينية عند الرومان كانت تسمى "هيلاريا" وتستمر لثلاثة أيام من 15 إلى 18 مارس .

بدأت فكرة الاحتفال بعيد الأم العربي في مصر على يد الأخوين (مصطفى وعلي

أمين) مؤسسي دار أخبار اليوم فقد وردت إلى علي أمين ذاته رسالة من أم تشكو له من جفاء أولادها و تتألم من نكرانهم للجميل و تصادف أن زارت إحدى الأمهات مصطفى أمين في مكتبه وحكت له قصتها التي تتلخص في أنها ترمَّلت وأولادها صغار، فلم تتزوج، وأوقفت حياتها على

أولادها، تقوم بدور الأب والأم، وظلت ترعى أولادها بكل طاقتها، حتى تخرجوا في الجامعة، وتزوجوا، واستقل كل منهم

بحياته، ولم يعودوا يزورونها إلا على

فترات متباعدة للغاية، فكتب مصطفى أمين وعلي أمين في عمودهما الشهير

(فكرة) يقترحان تخصيص يوم للأم يكون بمثابة تذكرة بفضلها، وأشارا إلى أن

الغرب يفعلون ذلك، وإلى أن الإسلام يحض على الاهتمام بالأم، فانهالت الخطابات عليهما تشجع الفكرة، واقترح البعض أن يخصص أسبوع للأم وليس مجرد يوم واحد، وشارك القراء في اختيار يوم 21 مارس ليكون عيدًا للأم، وهو أول أيام فصل الربيع؛ ليكون رمزًا للتفتح والصفاء والمشاعر الجميلة واحتفلت مصر بأول عيد أم في 21 مارس سنة 1956م .. ومن مصر خرجت الفكرة إلى البلاد العربية الأخرى..

ومنذ هذا اليوم و إلى الآن تحتفل المجتمعات العربية بعيد الأم في 21 مارس من كل عام.

Mother's Day

Some historians claim that Mother's Day started during the time of the Ancient Greeks in the context of spring celebrations, which were dedicated to Rhea – the Mother of the Gods.

In ancient Rome, a similar celebration was observed in honor and reverence of the goddess Cybele, called Hilaria, that lasted for three days from the fifteenth through the eighteenth of March.

Arabic Mother's Day

The idea of celebrating Arabic Mother's Day was initiated by brothers Mostafa and Ali Amin, founders of Akhbar Al Youm publishing house. Ali Amin had received a letter from a mother complaining about the unkindness of her children and lamenting their lack of gratitude. This coincided with Mostafa Amin being visited by another mother in his office. She disclosed the story of how she had become widowed when her children were still young and how she gave up marriage, deciding instead to dedicate her life to caring for and raising her children, playing the role of both mother and father at once. She continued to nurture her children with all her valor until they graduated, married, and started independent lives of their own. They only visited her very rarely. Subsequently, Mostafa and Ali Amin recommended designating a day for mothers as a reminder of their graciousness, in their famous column Fikra ("idea"). They indicated that the west already maintained this tradition and that the Holy Quran mandates reverence for mothers. Support letters hailed upon them in support of this idea with some even suggesting the dedication of a whole week for mothers instead of just one single day.

Readers participated in selecting March 21st to be Mother's Day, being considered the first day of spring, thereby symbolizing bloom, purity, and radiant sentiments. Egypt celebrated the first Mother's Day on March 21, 1956, and from there the idea spread to other Arab countries. Arab communities have been celebrating Mother's Day on March 21st of each year ever since.
