„Baltagul” este un roman scris de scriitorul român Mihail Sadoveanu și publicat în 1930.

Protagonista romanului polițist este Vitoria, soția unui cioban, care are o premoniție că soțul ei a fost ucis în timpul călătoriei acestuia până în localitatea învecinată pentru a cumpăra încă o turmă de oi.

Atunci când se duce la preotul satului și la prefectul județului pentru a-i preveni despre presentimentul său, ambii resping această posibilitate.

Cu toate acestea, presimțirea rea continuă să o macine. Deoarece Vitoria are mai mare încredere în superstițiile sale și în simbolurile arhaice țărănești decât în cei doi bărbați, aceasta trimite după fiul său, plecat și el cu treburi în alt sat.

Băiatul era și el în așteptarea unor vești de la tatăl său despre rambursarea datoriilor.

El se întoarce acasă și pornește într-o călătorie împreună cu mama sa pentru a afla ce s-a întâmplat cu tatăl său.

La sfârșitul călătoriei lor fantastice, aceștia găsesc trupul neînsuflețit al lui Nichifor și vor să-i răzbune moartea.

Craniul lui Nichifor indică că acesta a fost ucis cu o lovitură de baltag în cap.

Atunci când îi găsesc pe vinovați, aceștia se răzbună pe ei.

Unii critici consideră „Baltagul” drept cea mai bună operă a lui Sadoveanu și remarcă paralela cu balada populară românească „Miorița”.

Vitoria este o eroină atipică, deoarece este plină de energie și extrem de hotărâtă să-i găsească pe ucigașii soțul său.

Sadoveanu s-a inspirat din alte două balade, dintre care una este despre o ciobăniță care vrea să se răzbune pe o ceată de hoți.

The Hatchet is a book written by Romanian author Mihail Sadoveanu and published in 1930.

The protagonist of the crime novel is a shepherd's wife named Vitoria who has a premonition that her husband has died while he was traveling to the nearby town of Dorna to purchase another flock of sheep.

When she goes to see the priest in her village and her county's prefect and apprises them of her presentiment, they both dismiss it.

However, Vitoria's sense of foreboding continues, and she trusts her superstitions and the peasant world's archaic symbols more than she trusts either of the two men, so she sends for her son, who was away in another village, also on a business trip.

He had been waiting to hear from his father about repaying debts.

He returns home and embarks on a journey with his mother to discover what happened to his father.

At the end of their fantastical trek, they find his dead body and seek to avenge his death.

His skull indicates that he had been killed with a single hatchet blow to the head.

Upon finding the bandits who murdered him, they take their revenge.

Some critics consider The Hatchet to be Sadoveanu's best work and have noted the parallel themes between the novel and the Romanian folk ballad Miorita.

Vitoria is an unusual heroine in the novel as she is full of energy and extremely resolute in her search to find her husband's killers.

When writing the story, Sadoveanu was also inspired by two other ballads, one of which is about a shepherdess who seeks revenge on a band of thieves.
