Jean Negulesco a fost un scenarist și regizor de film de la Hollywood, originar din România. S-a născut în anul 1900 și a murit în anul 1993.

S-a născut la Craiova, dar s-a mutat la Viena în 1915, iar patru ani mai târziu, la București.

În București a îmbrățișat mai întâi vocația pentru pictură, însă după ce s-a mutat la Paris, a devenit regizor.

În 1927, călătorește la New York pentru a-și organiza o expoziție a picturilor sale, și se mută acolo.

Începe să-și croiască drumul spre California, unde lucrează mai întâi ca pictor de portrete.

A început să lucreze în industria filmului în 1934 ca pictor de schițe.

De-a lungul timpului, a avansat în carieră, și a fost promovat în funcția de asistent de regie și, mai târziu, în postul de director adjunct.

În următorii cinci ani, avansează în funcțiile de scenarist și regizor, sporindu-și reputația la Warner Brothers prin regizarea câtorva filme de scurt metraj.

A fost, în mod special, cunoscut pentru capacitatea sa de neegalat de a utiliza în mod vibrant siluetele și umbrele, prin filmarea din unghiuri neobișnuite.

Regizează primul film de lung metraj, „Femeia din Singapore”, în 1941.

Patru ani mai târziu, „Cel mai bun dintre toate” a ajuns în „50 de filme cult din toate timpurile”, listă elaborată de Entertainment Weekly.

S-a mutat în Spania în anii 1960 și a murit în urma unui atac cardiac la vârsta de 93 de ani.

Are o stea pe Aleea Celebrității din Hollywood.

Jean Negulesco was a Hollywood screenwriter and film director from Romania who lived from 1900 until 1993.

He was born in Craiova but moved to Vienna in 1915 and Bucharest four years later.

In Bucharest, he took up the vocation of painting and then became a stage director after moving to Paris.

Then in 1927, he traveled to New York City for an exhibition of his paintings and ended up staying there.

He then began working his way toward California where he worked as a painter of portraits at first.

He was able to get into the film industry in 1934 starting as a sketch artist.

Over time, he moved up through the ranks, being promoted to the position of assistant producer and then a second unit director.

Within the next five years, he advanced to the positions of screenwriter and director, augmenting his reputation at Warner Brothers by directing a number of short pieces.

He was particularly known for his rousing and unrivaled use of silhouettes and shadows by utilizing unusual camera angles.

The first feature film he directed was the 1941 movie Singapore Woman.

In 1948, the film Johnny Belinda won him an Academy Award nomination in the Directing category.

The movie How to Marry a Millionaire in 1955 won him the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Award for Best Film.

Four years later, The Best of Everything landed on the "Top 50 Cult Films of All Time" list put together by Entertainment Weekly.

He moved to Spain in the 1960s and died of heart failure there at the age of ninety-three.

Today he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
