Zakariyya Ahmad
Born to an Egyptian father and Turkish mother in Cairo in 1896, Zakarriya Ahmad is considered one of the luminaries of Egyptian music. Famed as a composer, Ahmad was known for his use of traditional Egyptian folk styles in his music.
Zakariyya Ahmad was born in 1896 in Egypt and influenced by his father's love for Arab songs; he joined the hymn troupes of Ismail Sukkar and Sheikh Ali Mahmoud. The hymn troupes were religious in nature in that they sang songs of devotion to God. One of the great schools of hymn performance was that of Sheikh Ali Mahmoud, under whom Zakariyya Ahmad studied and performed. This worked well for Ahmad, as prior to joining the troupes he had studied at the prestigious Al-Azhar University, mastering in the recitation of the Muslim holy text, the Qur'an.
He moved from hymnal performance to musical composition somewhere between 1919 and 1922, and in his career he composed a variety of pieces, from theatre to film soundtracks, to pieces for great singers like Umm Kulthum. He wrote 60 songs just for her, and their professional collaboration began in 1925. He also worked with the master and nationalistic poet, Mahmud Bayram el-Tunsi. El-Tunsi was exiled from Egypt during British colonial rule because of the nationalistic rhetoric evident in his poetry. During his exile he lived in France and Tunisia, and although the First Egyptian Revolution happened in 1919, he didn't return to the country of his birth until 1938. It was when he returned to Egypt that he began a working relationship with Zakariyya Ahmad. He passed away in 1961.
