चमक-धमक व भड़कीले नाच-गानों के दौर से पहले आई फिल्म मदर इंडिया महबूब खान द्वारा निर्देशित एक सर्वोत्कृष्ट बॉलीवुड कृति है| 1957 में रिलीज़ हुई इस फिल्म में बॉलीवुड के सितारे सुनील दत्त व नर्गिस मुख्य भूमिकाओं में थे| यह ऑस्कर पुरस्कारों की विदेशी भाषा श्रेणी में नामित होने वाली पहली बॉलीवुड फिल्म है, मदर इंडिया एक उत्कृष्ट कथानक व अभिनय के लिए प्रसिद्द है|

ग्रामीण पृष्ठभूमि की इस फिल्म में मुख्य पात्र राधा (नर्गिस) के ग्रामीण जीवन की कठिनाईओं का सजीव चित्रण है| फिल्म के सभी किरदार भयावह दरिद्रता के कुचक्र में पिस रहे हैं, व समस्याएँ उनका साथ ही नहीं छोड़तीं| इस सब के बीच राधा भारतीय नारी के शील व शक्ति के गुणों को दर्शाती हुई सभी कठिनाईओं को हँसती हुई झेलती है, अपने परिवार का भरण-पोषण करती है, अपने बच्चों के लिए बलिदान देती है, और वह अपने परिवार के खिलाफ जाके अपने समुदाय के सिद्धांतों का समर्थन करती है| राधा को एक आदर्श हिंदु माँ के रूप में दर्शाया गया है, हालांकि वह पारंपरिक पितृसत्ता से मुक्ति पा लेती है और अपने परिवार के भरण-पोषण में लग जाती है जब उसका पति वह करने में असमर्थ होता है|

हालांकि फिल्म की कथा का मूल भारतीय नारी के चरित्र की शुद्धता पर नियत है, परंतु साथ ही यह नए भारत की ब्रिटिश राज से स्वतन्त्रता के 10 वर्ष बाद की समस्याओं का एक जीवंत चित्रण भी है|

A true cinematographic masterpiece that came before Bollywood's pre-glitterati and fancy dance number trends, Mother India is a classic piece directed by Mehboob Khan. Released in 1957, it featured Bollywood icons Nargis and Sunil Dutt as lead roles. The first Bollywood film to be nominated for an Oscar in the foreign language category, Mother India is a movie renowned for its exquisitely wrought plot and acting.

Set in rural India, Mother India depicts the story of Radha (played by Nargis) and the challenges of village life. The grinding circle of poverty is one that the characters seem forever doomed to trudge through, and hardships upon hardships befall them. Radha epitomizes the strength and virtue of the Indian women in her ability to continue through the adversity; she cares and provides for her family, sacrifices for her children, and she defends the principles of her community against her own family. She personifies the virtues of a typical Hindu mother figure, yet she also breaks free from traditional patriarchy and rises to provide for her family when her husband is unable to. Mother India is grounded in the notion of female chastity, but it has also served as a definitive story for a nascent nation that is celebrating its identity a decade after independence from the British Empire.
