  • AB #437 | Premium Pre Built Sites for Affiliate Marketers
    Welcome to another edition of The Affiliate Buzz, where affiliate marketers have been coming to be inspired, informed and motivated to succeed since way back in 2003. It’s that time of year, time for marketers, affiliate and otherwise to ramp up and cash in on the holiday season. James and Arlene have been hard at work, not only on their own sites, but also helping their clients prepare for the season with slick looking new or updated websites.
    They will highlight a few of those websites in today’s show as they discuss the key elements of a premium, pre-built website.
    The Cornerstone of Premium Pre Built Sites
    The more things change, the more they stay the same. It’s still all about getting people on your email list. Once that happens, you can let automation, those already prepared emails, do the heavy lifting. The way to get people on your email list is with an enticing opt-in. Here again, nothing beats a tried and true classic – like a book. It may sound like a lot of work, but James and Arlene will share their system for getting beautiful, professional books written, illustrated and made ready for multiple formats. They’ll tell you what outsourcers you need to hire and what information you need to provide them in order to get the results you want. That’s not the only place they use outsourcing. James also hires someone to do the annoying job of creating and linking up all of those pop-up windows.
    Multi-page Sites and Multiple Opt-ins
    In some cases, you may want to create multiple opt-ins. CreditLineOptions.com, which will go live on Monday, has multiple pages, multiple products and multiple opt-ins. A person who is looking for a credit card isn’t going to want your book about mortgages. Each category of products has it’s own pop-up, it’s own opt-in book and it’s own series of auto-responder emails.
    Arlene will tell you how they created the site, including the home page, pages for each of the product categories and, of course, those opt-in books.
    Are You a Fat Cat?
    We’ll start with a story about a Fat Cat. Does that refer to a really successful affiliate marketer who makes more money than they know what to do with or to a 30-pound feline? Listen to find out. You’ll also here:

    * Who offers the worst web hosting service on the planet
    * The opt-in item that gives you instant credibility
    * How to build your email list with a stand out opt-in offer, or series of opt-in offers
    * The number one thing clients needing websites push back on
    * The three outsourcers you need to hire to create your opt-in book
    * The importance of hiring a great writer, where to find them and how much you should expect to pay
    * What information you should provide your writer with in order to get the results you want
    * A lost pet story with a happy ending

    As of the airing of this show, there are only 43 days until Black Friday, 46 days until Cyber Monday and 73 days until Christmas. The time to beef up your opt-ins and get those emails rolling out is now!

  • AB #436 | Secrets for Maximizing Black Friday Sales, the Busiest Shopping Day of the Year!
    Welcome to another edition of The Affiliate Buzz, where affiliate marketers have been coming to be inspired, informed and motivated to succeed since way back in 2003. The time has come! As of the airing of this episode, Black Friday is only 58 days away! James and Internet marketing consultant Karen Garcia discuss what you need to do now to be ready.
    Karen is an Internet marketing consultant with Lab6Media. She has a broad range of experience including, but not limited to, affiliate program management, email marketing, search marketing, SEO, SEM, graphic design, and website design. She loves Internet marketing so much that she left the world of physics and chocolate covered strawberries in order to do the work she does now.
    After going over the big dates (including Karen’s explanation of Giving Tuesday) and what merchants and affiliates can do now to prepare, Karen will share some of her favorite affiliate programs, as well as some upcoming events she’s getting ready for. Karen and James will also mention their favorite online tools for getting and staying organized during the hectic, but profitable holiday season.
    Tips for Merchants
    Karen will share the tips she offers merchants for preparing for the holiday season. This is when retailers make 30-40% of their money, so it’s important to be ready. Now is the time to double check that your tracking, all of your tracking, is working correctly. Karen recommends that merchants create an affiliate account for their own programs so they can step through and see how things look from the affiliates’ point of view.
    It’s also the time to bump up the creative content and holiday promotions. Of course, affiliates will do some of this on their own, but Karen recommends it come from the merchant in order to ensure that things stay on brand.
    Tips for Affiliates
    Merchants aren’t the only ones that need to be ready. This is the time for affiliates to gear up their email marketing, start assembling gift guides and check that all of their links are working. (Karen has a horror story of associate losing out on thousands of dollars because of a broken link.) Karen recommends that affiliates update and refresh their top 10 or 20 posts. It’s also a good idea to have an outside person go through your website and look for problems. James has first hand experience with this, having many times felt that everything was perfect, only to have Arlene hand him a list of 20 corrections that needed to be made.
    Listen now to hear:

    * Dates to mark on your calendar – Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday
    * What merchants can and should do to prepare for Black Friday
    * What affiliates can and must do to prepare for Black Friday
    * Some of Karen’s favorite affiliate programs (including a chance to find out what “sidewalk surfers” and “duck shoes” are)

    Since it’s all about being ready and staying organized, James and Karen share some of their favorite online project management tools:

  • AB #435 | PAD 2.0 – 8 Creative Ways to Repurpose Your Most Successful Content to Rank and Convert
    Welcome to another edition of The Affiliate Buzz, where affiliate marketers have been coming to be inspired, informed and motivated to succeed since way back in 2003. Today, James is joined by…wait for it…Arlene! Arlene has been off with the grandkids for a lot of the summer, but she’s back. She’ll give us an update on the family and then James and Arlene will launch into how SEO has changed over the years and ways to repurpose content that is already successful.
    Back in the Backlink Days
    You’ve heard that content is king. But that’s not all it is. Content is also a lot of work. On average, you’ll put in three hours of research for every one hour of writing. So it makes sense that you’d want to get as much content out of that research as possible.
    James and Arlene explain that in the old days, the way you did that was to work your content into several distinctive articles, one for your website and a couple of others (which included your call to action and your contact information) to be given out to other webmasters. Hence the term Professional Article Distribution (PAD). In exchange for those free articles, the webmaster would provide links back to your site. Those backlinks were the backbone of your SEO.
    But times have changed. Today Google not only considers links back to your site, it considers the whole enchilada- backlinks, mentions on social media, your presence on YouTube, Amazon, etc. In other words, your brand is your SEO.
    Repurposing your content doesn’t just make Google happy. It also means that your message can land in front of potential clients, wherever they happen to hang out. Some people read blogs and some people listen to podcasts. Others can’t tear themselves away from Facebook. You need content that fits on all of those platforms.
    Creative Ways to Repurpose Content
    Since generating quality content is a lot of work, you’ll want to make the most of your most successful content. Listen now as James and Arlene share their secretes for repurposing successful content including:

    * Eight ways to repurpose the same content
    * How to select which content to repurpose
    * How to break your content into easily digestible, bite-sized pieces
    * How a podcast can become a YouTube video
    * How to repurpose content into material for opt-ins and giveaways
    * How to create a presence on Amazon, Pinterest and Slide Share using content you already have

    Once you’ve created all that content in multiple forms, there’s a whole assortment of different ways you can use it. Of course, you’ll want to upload an article to your website. You may also want to send a PDF of a podcast transcript out to your email list. Or perhaps you’ll offer a checklist as an opt-in. Every piece of content you put out there is working to establish you as an expert and to bring visitors to your website. And since you chose successful content to begin with, you can be sure that some of those visitors will convert.

  • AB #433 | Avoiding CAN-SPAM Penalties, Managing Email Opt Outs and Preserving Brand Integrity with Clean Email Lists
    Welcome to another edition of The Affiliate Buzz, where affiliate marketers have been coming to be inspired, informed and motivated to succeed since way back in 2003. Arlene is away today, but James is joined by Cris Angelini, Sales Director at UnsubCentral to discuss managing email opt outs and avoiding CAN-SPAM penalties.
    Cris is an accomplished business professional with 20 years of experience working with people, processes, revenue growth and sales leadership. Prior to working at UnsubCentral, Cris was the Vice President of Revenue Development at Volusion, where he was responsible for working cross departmentally to help drive core product sales, revenue growth, customer service and partner recruitment. Now at UnsubCentral, Cris consults with prospective clients to determine the best services for their needs.
    And everyone needs to manage their email list to make sure their honoring customer requests to unsubscribe. Companies can be fined up to $16,000 per infraction under the CAN-SPAM Act so targeting, suppressing and managing your email communications and avoiding CAN-SPAM penalties is not only the right thing to do by your customers, it’s the right thing to do by your finances.
    Managing email lists is not as simple as it sounds, especially when you’re talking about multiple lists across multiple businesses. When one company is paying another to manage their email marketing, both are responsible for complying with law. That can be tricky when advertisers have one email list, affiliates have another and neither one wants to share. But Cris will describe strategies that are available for managing multiple email lists to make sure you are honoring customer opt out requests, suppressing email so that your campaign only reaches targeted customers and offering preferences so that you can decrease the number of customers who choose to unsubscribe.
    What’s In the CAN-SPAM Act
    The CAN-SPAM Act is aimed at consumer protection and covers everything from your header information and misleading subject lines to not supplying consumers with your physical address. It also requires online marketers to honor customer opt out requests within 10 business days. But that may not necessarily be bad news. Cris has found that if you communicate with customers how and when they want to be communicated with, they’ll become better customers and buy more from you.
    Opt Out or Opt Down?
    Cris also reminds us that almost 80% of customers who opt-out aren’t really saying that they don’t want to be marketed to by your brand. They’re willing to hear from you. They just want to it in a different way and at a different frequency. Cris will explain the various options that allow you to comply with customers’ requests while still being able to market to them.
    Listen now as he describes:

    * Tools and techniques for avoiding CAN-SPAM penalties
    * Tools that can help you learn to “scrub” your email lists
    * How to manage email suppression
    * How you can decrease the number of customers unsubscribing by 75%
    * How to give customers the chance to opt-down rather than opt out
    * How you can utilize the Thank You page of your opting out process to continue a relationship with your customers
    * How to assure the security of your email lists

  • AB #432 | What Everybody Ought to Know About Outsourcing, Plus How to Hire a Virtual Assistant
    Welcome to another edition of The Affiliate Buzz, where affiliate marketers have been coming to be inspired, informed and motivated to succeed since way back in 2003. Last weeks episode CPA and attorney, Andrew B. Gordon joined us to discuss what merchants, affiliates and bloggers need to know about the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Disclosure Guidelines for 2016, in this episode James is joined by serial entrepreneur, Desmond Soon. Where they discuss what everyone ought to know about outsourcing, plus how to hire a virtual assistant.
    Desmond has spent a third of his life in Singapore, a third in Canada and a third in Japan. He was always interested in being an entrepreneur and confesses to James about his first business venture when he was growing up in Vancouver. It’s not something he’s proud of now, but it did start him down the road to becoming a successful entrepreneur and business coach. His experience includes work in both online and brick and mortar businesses and he has worked in both Asia and North America. Desmond's Quote is  “turning setbacks into comebacks”. When he’s not coaching, attending speaking engagements or working on his own business, he enjoys spending time with his two boys, thus the term “fatherpreneur”. But the one thing Desmond has never learned is how to hire a virtual assistant.

    Do What You Do Best and Outsource the Rest
    Desmond approached James to learn about outsourcing. Desmond knows he needs help. He keeps resisting and procrastinating to hire online, and confesses that the main obstacle for him has been fear of the unknown, and not knowing when a good time is to hire a virtual assistant.

    How to hire a virtual assistant
    James, on the other hand, is big believer in outsourcing. He recently wrote a book Outsourcing Essentials for Podcasters - The Secrets to Hiring Talent on a Beach Hut Budget. James recommends that podcasters and online business owners follow his 15 minute rule- if you can’t do it yourself in 15 minutes, then spend the next 15 minutes creating a job post so you can hire someone to do it.
    James tells Desmond what platforms are the best and what they offer. Desmond also learns exactly how to go about creating a job post, how the payment system works and how inexpensive it can be to hire your virtual dream team.
    Listen now to hear about:

    * Why people resist outsourcing
    * How to Hire a Virtual Assistant
    * Which platforms to use
    * The difference between BaseCamp, Upwork and Fiverr
    * Deciding who to hire as a VA
    * Why and how to track and report outsourcing expenses
    * How much you should expect to pay

    After getting a feel for how outsourcing works, Desmond hones in on the big question. Does he need a Virtual Assistant? What can a VA do? How much does one cost? and why every entrepreneur needs a VA (and perhaps every person needs a VA). James discusses how the talented VAs he’s hired become the backbone of his business, managing his projects, his team members and even him, he tells Desmond what three things he (and you) can do to get started right away.

  • AB #431 | What Merchants, Affiliates and Bloggers Must Know About FTC Disclosure Guidelines for 2016
    Welcome to another edition of The Affiliate Buzz, where affiliate marketers have been coming to be inspired, informed and motivated to succeed since way back in 2003. Arlene is away today, but James is joined by CPA and attorney, Andrew B. Gordon to discuss what merchants, affiliates and bloggers need to know about the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Disclosure Guidelines for 2016.
    Andrew Gordon graduated from the University of Illinois with a BA and Masters Degree in accounting, and went on to get a law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Andrew previously worked in tax at a big-four public accounting firm and clerked at the IRS Office of Chief Counsel during law school. He concentrates his legal work in the areas of tax controversies and compliance, corporate litigation, and FTC litigation and compliance. His dual preparation as a CPA and attorney makes Andrew the person to advise online merchants, affiliates, bloggers, podcasters and influencers about the evolving FTC requirements.
    How Did We Get Here?
    As affiliates, advertisers and influencers, we all want to make money. At the same time, as consumers we want to be protected and to know that no one is pulling the wool over our eyes. The FTC was established over one hundred years ago to prevent unfair competition and to protect consumers by preventing deceptive acts. Recent actions have made it clear that this applies to the online marketplace including blogs, podcasts and social media postings. The FTC has recently issued new guidance for making effective disclosures in digital marketing.
    The Latest (2016) Guidance from the FTC
    So what do the Guidelines say? Trying to get your head around government requirements can be a little intimidating. Andrew is here to help us understand the gist of the FTC disclosure for affiliate marketing. In a nutshell, online marketers are required to disclose their relationships with advertisers and merchants in clear and unambiguous language. But what does “clear and unambiguous” mean? It means a lot of things – that you can’t use a minuscule, hard to read font for your disclosure. It means that the disclosure for a YouTube influencer should be included in the video. Even Tweets need a disclaimer and Andrew will tell you how to do it without using up half of your 140 characters. Andrew will explain exactly what how the FTC requirements are applied to different forms of digital media. Listen now to hear:

    * The history of the FTC oversight and how FTC oversight is currently applied
    * What the FTC disclosure for affiliate marketing require
    * What recent case decisions tell us about FTC expectations
    * How aggressive the FTC will be in pursuing small, individual online marketers
    * How disclaimers should differ according to media type
    * Who is responsible for ensuring disclosure
    * How the FTC guidelines apply to influencers
    * Strategies for complying with the FTC guidelines when using Twitter, Instagram and Facebook
    * How advertiser can ensure their affiliates are complying with the disclosure guidelines
    * Why advertisers need an affiliate manager

  • AB #430 | Tricia Meyer, Affiliate Marketer of the Year Shares What’s Working in Affiliate Marketing Today!
    Welcome to another edition of The Affiliate Buzz, where affiliate marketers come to be inspired, informed and motivated to succeed. Arlene is away today watching a bunch of two-year olds (including her granddaughters) play soccer, but James is joined by lawyer, blogger, affiliate marketer and consultant, Tricia Meyer to talk about what’s working in affiliate marketing today.
    Tricia is the owner of SunshineRewards.com, HelpingMomsConnect.com and is a partner in the WineClubGroup.com. Tricia has been a finalist for the Pinnacle Award for Industry Advocate and won Affiliate of the Year in 2014 and Best Blogger in 2012. She also serves as the Executive Director for the Performance Marketing Association, frequently speaks and writes about affiliate marketing on topics such as monetizing blogs, affiliate and affiliate manager relationships, and the basics of affiliate marketing.
    Tricia wasn’t always the industry legend she is now. She stumbled into affiliate marketing by accident, but immediately recognized it as a place where workaholism could be rewarded. Working for someone else, she always hit a ceiling where she wasn’t going to be paid any more. As an affiliate marketer however, the more she works, the more she earns.
    Tricia’s Topic for the Affiliate Summit
    In preparing for her presentation for the Affiliate Summit, Tricia realized that her former career as a lawyer actually applies to her work in affiliate marketing. She’ll discuss negotiating tactics – strategies that can be used in life, legal battles and, of course, what’s working in affiliate marketing today.  Commissions can almost always be negotiated. Putting a merchant on your homepage? Featuring them in your newsletter? Tricia will tell you how to determine what merchants are paying other affiliates so you know what to ask for when negotiating with your affiliate manager.
    What’s Working in Affiliate Marketing Today?
    James and Tricia will talk about what’s working in affiliate marketing today including:

    * Negotiation between affiliates and affiliate managers
    * Diversification – why you can’t rely on Google or Facebook
    * Coupons, cash back and other strategies for combining content with “the deal”
    * Steps you can take to make your site a one stop shop
    * The latest news and resources from the Performance Marketing Association

    Tricia will tell us how her business has evolved over the years. Gone are the days of simply throwing a few coupons onto your blog. Tricia will stress the importance of diversifying (both the number of merchants you work with as well as the types of sites you use) and will explain why you can’t rely on one platform, even Google or Facebook.
    Tricia’s Advice to New Affiliates
    Keep networking. Business is based upon relationships. Not only do you learn from others, but strong relationships are the key to accessing things like higher commissions, exclusive deals, new tools, etc.
    What You Can Do for the PMA and What the PMA Can Do for You
    Tricia is currently the Executive Director of the Performance Marketing Association (PMA), the industry’s biggest advocacy group. Along with delivering the goods on technical topics like Internet tax reform and FTC disclosures, the PMA has an array of resources for new affiliates including a glossary of terms, a job board and salary study.
    You can support these efforts by becoming a member of the PMA and by spreading the word about the work they are doing. For more information, check out http://thepma.org.

  • AB #428 | What Everyone Ought to Know About Repurposing Content
    Welcome to another edition of The Affiliate Buzz, where affiliate marketers have been coming to be inspired, informed and motivated to succeed since way back in 2003. Arlene is away visiting the grandbaby, but we’re here with James (and momentarily with Led Zeppelin) to learn how to make the most out of those hours of research by repurposing your content.
    Why Should You Be Repurposing Content?
    So other than the obvious reason advantage of getting more benefit out of the same amount of work, why is repurposing content important? Repurposing content allows you to:

    * Save time and money
    * Maximize your SEO
    * Add variety to your internet presence
    * Put your content in front of your ideal client, wherever they happen to hang out

    Eight Simple Steps to Eight Pieces of Quality Content
    As listeners have no doubt realized, James produces quite a bit of content. However, he still wants to get as much mileage as he can out of it. It’s generally agreed that there are three hours of research behind every hour of writing. So, here’s James’ step by step guide to repurposing that content to scatter it all over the Internet:

    * Research and develop a detailed outline based on a need or problem your ideal customer has.
    * Hire a professional writer to work that outline into a feature article.
    * Use the outline to record a podcast episode.
    * Get a transcription of the podcast. Clean it up. Add a nice cover and a table of contents to make a finished document.
    * Hire another writer to do two re-writes of the original article and use them as guest posts. (Yes, backlinks still matter.)
    * Hire a freelancer to make a 30 page Power Point presentation from your outline. Upload it into SlideShare.
    *  Record a narration of your article. Hire a freelancer to make it and the text into a video you can post on YouTube.
    * Hire a freelancer to create an infographic around the points in your outline.

    Once you’ve created all that content, you have a lot of options as to how to use it. You can upload it to your website, send it out to your email list, or offer it as an opt-in. Every piece of content you put out there is working to establish you as an expert and to bring visitors to your website. In fact, you can get so much powerful content from one well researched outline that James suggests you only need to do it once per month.
    We know what you’re thinking. If you’re not a writer, a video producer, a graphic designer, a voice actor, that sounds like a lot of outsourcing. We like outsourcing. In fact, we love it. And it doesn’t have to break the bank. Let’s take a look at James’ cost breakdown for those eight pieces of content:

    * Professional writer for the feature article - $60
    * Transcription of the podcast -$12 to $20
    * Re-writes of feature article - $30
    * Power Point presentation - $25 to $30
    * Narration of the article for audio track on video- $20
    * Infographic $30-$50

    There you have it. One well researched outline- free except for your time. Six professionals freelancers - $190. Eight pieces of professional content – priceless!

  • AB #427 | A Fresh Website Design with the an Emphasis on Building and Influencing an Audience
    Welcome to another edition of The Affiliate Buzz, where affiliate marketers have been coming to be inspired, informed and motivated to succeed since 2003. Arlene is away this week, but James has recently been working to revamp a client’s website with a fresh website design. He’ll share the insight he’s had about how websites have changed over the years, what things remain essential and what things to let go.
    Andy had started his website years ago to share some of the tips he had learned for managing his allergies. He works with three premium merchants, marketing products that are a perfect fit for his content and has set a goal to earn around $1,500 - $2,000 per month from affiliate sales. However, that’s not the only, or even the main goal of the website. The primary goal is to promote Andy’s eBook, which has been formatted as a PDF, as a mobi file and as an audiobook.
    Being an author automatically makes you an expert. And since the goal of a website is have the audience know, like and trust you, establishing credibility is important. But that opt-in also serves to build your list, and as James reminds us, most sales don’t come from a visit to your website. Instead they come from a click on a link in an email. Your auto-respond email system is the core of your funnel. So how long should that program last? Well, James has one the lasts for more than four years.
    The More Things Change…
    When James sat down to update Andy’s website, the former site seemed so… 2005. He realized that things had changed enough in the affiliate marketing world to warrant a complete overhaul of the website, not just a few tweaks. However, the old cliché remains true. The more things change, the more they remain the same. Content is still king and the goal of your website is still to influence your visitors. The whole idea is to build an audience that knows and trusts you, so that when they’re ready to make a purchase they’ll be willing to take you up on your recommendations. So James and Andy set out to create a site that would:

    * Build an email list
    * Build an audience
    * Position Andy as an expert in the field
    * Drive traffic from Google, Facebook and Facebook paid ads
    * Drive traffic from real media
    * Distribute Andy’s eBook
    * Feed into an auto-respond email follow-up series
    * Have a fail-proof system for adding weekly articles and weekly podcasts

    Get ‘er Done
    There are things you can count on; death, taxes and the fact that the Affiliate Buzz will be recorded every Thursday. In fact in, James and Arlene have only missed 12 episodes in the nearly 13 years that they’ve been doing the show. What’s the secret to their consistency? Having a system. For James and Arlene, that system is anchored in using the online project management tool Basecamp. Basecamp includes templates for their show outlines, a place to communicate with all of the freelancers they outsource to and triggers that auto-update their accounts on social media. Basically, James just has to do one thing – show up.
    Check it out!

    And speaking of really caring, if there’s a four-legged friend in your life that you really care about, you’re not alone. Two out of every three American households have a pet and the pet industry generates $62.7 billion per year. Twenty-four billion of that is in pet food, pet treats and chews.
    Pets can become members of our families. James talks about his grand-dogs and almost sounds like he enjoys them as much as his grandkids.
    Okay, so we love our pets and our pets have to eat, but why should it be raw? Because that’s what’s natural. Cats and dogs are carnivores. Their “ancestral food source” was the prey they hunted. Cooking food can deplete its nutritional value. Raw Paws offers all natural, free of additives food for your pet, designed to mimic the 80:10:10 ratio (meat, organs, bone) that they would get in nature. Pet parents see the results in the health of their pets. In fact, a raw food diet could be just what the doctor ordered for those two overweight kitties James and Arlene are fostering.
    So, we want healthier food for our furry friends. But Raw Paws doesn’t just sell food to sustain your pet. They know that we also want to be able to give edible rewards, to out presents for our pets under the Christmas tree, in short- to offer treats. So Raw Paws also makes raw meat based treats and chews. That ought to make someone’s tail wag.
    Want to be a Raw Paws Affiliate?
