  • AB #425 | How to Increase Sales and Conversions with Video Marketing with Hope Horner, Founder and CEO Lemonlight
    In this week's edition of the Affiliate Buzz, James Martell is joined Hope Horner, Founder and CEO Lemonlight, an LA Based business that produces and distributes branded video content at scale. Hope joins James to share how to increase sales and conversions with video marketing.
    Hope is a three-time entrepreneur who grew up in the backwoods of Tennessee. When she turned 18, she moved from her small hometown to Los Angeles to attend Pepperdine University, where she graduated with a degree in International Business. Horner has been featured in Inc., KABC, Extra! and multiple other publications highlighting her successes in the Silicon Beach community over the past decade. Her current enterprise, Lemonlight, produces and distributes video marketing content and has offices in six major cities.
    Why Videos?
    With so many options out there, why should you turn to video marketing as a strategy? When Hope was searching for the most effective marketing techniques, a few facts got her attention:

    * People are 87% more likely to watch a video than to read text
    * 71% of marketers say video outperforms other marketing techniques
    * Video gets shared on social media 1,200 times more than text and links combined

    Once she realized the power of video, Hope set-up a system to produce and distribute brand videos, pre-roll videos and videos designed for sharing on social media.
    Be the Star of your own Documentary
    Hope describes brand videos as mini documentaries. A brand video usually consists of an interview with the founder and/or business owner as well as testimonials from satisfied customers. The Lemonlight crew will film for about half an hour and will then pull out the one or two minutes that really bring your story to life. And if you find the idea of being on camera a little intimidating, don’t worry. It’s Lemonlight’s job to make you look great and sound great. And nobody is done until you love it.
    But brand videos aren’t the only option. Those 30 second, pre-roll commercials that we sometimes skip over can have a powerful impact, especially if you know how to pack your message and your call to action into the first three to five seconds.
    And what about social media in video marketing? What makes one video get shared dozens of times and another one sit unviewed? Hope will tell you how to increase the likelihood that your video will get shared, as well as an interesting fact about the audio side of social media videos. Hope has a lot of information to share, so listen now to hear:

    * The components of a successful marketing video
    * Three different places to include your brand video
    * How to use a pre-roll video to drive people to your site
    * Sites other than YouTube that can show your pre-roll videos
    * How to get your videos shared on social media
    * The different options for video content (interviews, testimonials, voice over, animation, etc.)
    * The different stages in producing a video
    * What you need to know about your audience in order to produce a successful marketing video

    Want to Be in the Lemonlight?
    Hope has offices in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami, Austin and Washington D.C. If none of those locations are convenient for you, she has 45 cinematographers deployed across the country and one will come to you. Contact her at http://www.lemonlight.com for more information.

  • AB #424 | Full-Funnel Marketing on Facebook: Turn Your Data into Sales with Dmitriy Kruglyak
    Welcome to another edition of The Affiliate Buzz, where affiliate marketers come to be inspired, informed and motivated to succeed. Arlene is away this week, but James is joined the CEO of TargetChoice, Dmitriy Kruglyak.
    Dmitriy Kruglyak is CEO of TargetChoice, a performance marketing company that specializes in Internet traffic generation and monetization. They develop their own online properties and products, to generate leads and sales by driving traffic through a variety of paid, organic and email marketing channels.
    Prior to launching his own businesses, Dmitriy held a variety of product development and marketing positions in the Silicon Valley, including helping E.piphany Software deliver a marketing CRM product which won #1 ranking by the Gartner Group, drove the company from $0 to $200M and led to a successful IPO. Today, Dmitriy will talk with James about full funnel marketing making maximum use of the data available through Facebook.
    So Much Data, So Little Time
    Dmitriy combined his marketing experience with his software development know how to create something that allows you to actually use all the data that Facebook is collecting. In fact, he’s developed strategies to optimize that data to reach every level of your sales funnel. Specifically, Dmitriy will tell us how to:

    * Make sure your not missing out on the best Facebook opportunities
    * Meld Facebook advertising with your email marketing campaign
    * Monetize your customer data assets
    * Create a look-a-like audience based on your existing customers

    Clicks and Conversions and Look-a-Likes, Oh My!
    There are some really exciting things about Facebook. It’s huge! It has a gazillion features!
    And there are some really challenging things about Facebook. It’s huge. It has a gazillion features.
    Facebook is a great option for engaging your existing customers who may be feeling overwhelmed or disenchanted by the amount of email that arrives in their inbox. It can also be great way to prospect for new customers, targeted new customers. Dmitriy will explain how Facebook can take an your email list, analyze the characteristics of your customers and then provide you with an “audience” of people who share those characteristics. Sounds awesome, right? But even knowing all that, you’ll still be left with a lot of questions:

    * How big of a look-a-like audience do you want? One percent of U.S. Facebook users? Two percent?
    * Which ads will function best with that “audience”?
    * Should you test various ads with subsections of your audience?
    * How much of your budget should be dedicated to prospecting with this targeted audience? How much to advertising to those who are already in your funnel? How much to do up sales with existing customers?
    *  How can you exclude your existing customers from your prospecting and retargeting campaigns?

    Overwhelmed yet? The good news is that there’s plenty of data available to answer those questions. However, as Dmitriy assures us, if you want to take advantage of all that Facebook provides, you won’t be physically, mentally, or emotionally able to. That’s where automation comes in. Dmitriy’s combined knowledge of software development and affiliate and pay for performance marketing make him the perfect person to develop an app that can turn your data into sales.
    Hot Off the Presses
    You heard it here first! Dmitriy’s software - TargetChoice, which is currently in the pre-release stage, will be available for self serve, not just managed services providers. For more information check out https://www.facebook.com/targetchoiceapp/

  • AB #422 | Listen as Jonathan Miller, CEO of Forge Business and OfferForge.com, Shares the Biggest Mistakes In Affiliate Marketing Today (and the Best Moves You Can Make)!
    In this episode of the Affiliate Buzz, James Martell gets a chance to catch up Jonathan Miller of OfferForge, Africa’s leading performance based marketing company. It’s been eight years since the last time Jonathan was on the show, so James will ask him how things have changed in pay for performance world.
    Jonathan Miller is the CEO of Johannesburg based, OfferForge. Like James, Jonathon is a veteran of affiliate marketing, having started in the industry in 1997. He started his business in 2001, with no funding, no employees, and working out of his garage. OfferForge provides a full range of online marketing solutions underpinned by a commitment to technological excellence and honesty in online lead generation and customer acquisition. Jonathon’s success has made him a popular international conference speaker, blogger, and strategist.
    A lot has changed since the last time James and Jonathon spoke. As you probably recall, the world underwent a major economic crisis in the fall of 2008. Jonathon will tell us how it sparked a new generation of entrepreneurs. He’ll also tell us how the spread of technology in Africa differs from the West. Then they’ll get into the knitty-gritty of pay for performance marketing.
    The Ups and Downs of Pay for Performance Marketing
    Jonathon’s cutting edge technological know-how is based in a solid business foundation. He reminds us that, “As much as the landscape has changed, it’s all stayed the same. It’s about finding the right customers and treating them fairly and openly.”
    Pay for performance is a great way to do just that. On the affiliate side, it keeps marketers sharp and innovative. You’re only as good as your last transaction. On the advertiser side, pay for performance offers a stable, transparent, predictable source of sales which can be planned and budgeted for. (Jonathon suggests that that budget should not be too skimpy).
    Here’s What You’ll Hear
    In spelling out the biggest mistakes you can make as an affiliate marketer and best moves , Jonathon reminds us to stick to business fundamentals. Not only because there’s nothing more important to a business than monetization, but also because he’s seen some real horror stories play out when businesses weren’t prepared for changes that were beyond their control.
    Listen now to hear Jonathon’s take on:

    * How the 2008 economic crisis was a catalyst for new affiliates
    * What’s working well for affiliates and advertisers in the pay for performance model
    * The biggest mistakes affiliate marketers make and how to avoid them
    * The risks of depending on a business channel you don’t control
    * How to identify the right from the wrong kind of education
    * How to create a winning combination of content and engagement
    * The top three skills an affiliate marketer needs to be successful
    * What we can expect for the future of affiliate marketing

    Keeping It Up
    Is WordPress insecure? David doesn’t think so. He reminds us that a full quarter of sites on the web are built in WordPress, so it stands to logic that when a site has trouble, there’s a chance it will be a WordPress site. However, David also offers a friendly reminder about the most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your site (Hint: it starts with “up” and ends with “dating”). He mentions a recent news story where failure to update had international geo-political implications and recommends a few plugins that can enhance your site’s security.
    Manage Your WordPress Site: Plugins
    This episode is absolutely packed with resources. Listen now to hear David’s recommendations for the best plugins for everything from SEO to list building.

    The need for speed
    We all know the Internet has made us impatient. But it’s not just us A difference of a few seconds can impact your conversion rate and Google has announced that speed is a factor in SEO.
    David recommends the following resources to find out what’s slowing your page down:

    * websitetest.org
    * wpengine.com

    To increase your speed:

    * W3 Total Cache
    * WP Rocket
    * MaxCDN

    The Bottom Line - Plugins for Maximizing Revenue
    Since the top goal is the bottom line, David also recommends some plugins for maximizing revenue:

    * OptinMonster
    * Revive Old Post
    * AdRotate
    * FullStory

    Security
    David believes your web host should help with security, but he also recommends:

    * CloudFlare
    * Sucuri

  • AB #418 | How to Get More Sales Credited to You with Cross Device Tracking with Jeannine Crooks, Client Services Manager with Affiliate Window US
    In this week's edition of the Affiliate Buzz, host and Instructor of the Affiliate Marketers BootCamp, James Martell talks with Jeannine Crooks, Client Services Manager at Awin Global, of about the fundamentals of cross device tracking, how the technology works, and the benefits for both merchants and affiliates.
    Jeannine is a Senior Account Manager with Affiliate Window US where she works closely with many of their largest programs such as 1&1 Internet, Lonely Planet, Agoda.com, and Ctrip.com.
    Jeannine is also a frequent speaker at numerous events including Affiliate Management Days, Affiliate Summit and Bloggy Con, and is a regular contributor to iBlog Magazine. She is a prominent affiliate advocate in the fight against the affiliate nexus tax both in Colorado and other states.
    Cross Device Tracking Overview
    Jeannine, who was the guest of Affiliate Buzz #339, draws from common everyday experiences to illustrate what cross device tracking is and how it affects affiliates. Spending time online isn’t limited to home computers. People use a wide range of devices to access the internet for everything from email to shopping. This really changes things for affiliates.
    Cross device tracking gives merchants better insight into the consumers. For example, content sites, like blogs, is the premiere sales opportunity when cross device tracking is implemented. Discount codes and cashback sites follow a close second. On Black Friday, Jeannine says they used cross device tracking to see which devices were being used during various points throughout the day.
    How Cross Device Tracking Works
    There are two different approaches Jeanine says companies can take when it comes to cross device tracking.
    1. The Deterministic Tracking Method

    * You identify a user and know who that person is. (Their personal information is hashed, which unlike encryption cannot be reversed.)
    * Allows 100% accuracy so there’s no doubt that the affiliate has earned credit for the sale.
    * Through the use of desktop and mobile cookies, you can track that person’s online path that leads to a sale.

    2. The Probabilistic Tracking Method

    * Uses no specific user identification, but relies on assumptions.
    * Works better for retargeting, which is estimated to be between 25-75% accurate and not an issue for a retargeted ad than it would be for other methods.

    Jeannine loves working for Affiliate Window. Their business model is to help merchants and affiliates grow and get things right. She describes some of the other things she loves about the company during the podcast, and wraps up the podcast by sharing some of her favorite exclusive programs.
    If you’re attending Affiliate Summit East 2016, be sure to check out Jeannine’s panel, 31 Tools of the Trade for the Affiliate Marketers, co-presented with Don Lubrido and Mine Alen.
