As the conflict between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, approaches the one-year anniversary, the country’s women have been at the receiving end of the violence including human rights violations. Reporter Angie Omar has this report.

The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) has reported new cases of yellow fever in multiple African countries within the last month. Dr. William Komakech, WHO Epidemiologist for infectious disease control in the DR Congo tells VOA’s Carol Van Dam the total number of confirmed cases is down from a year ago, but active surveillance is required due to the potential for transmission through travel.

The United States is considering April 18 for the potential resumption of Sudan peace talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as part of Washington's efforts to prevent the conflict from escalating into a regional war. Tom Perriello, U.S. special envoy for Sudan, said that these talks need to be “inclusive,” involving the African Union, the East African bloc IGAD, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. VOA’s senior analyst Mohamed Elshinnawi has the details.

The Pan African Parliament re-elected is president, Zimbabwean politician Fortune Charumbira, despite allegations of sexual assault and misappropriation of funds in Johannesburg. His appointment was celebrated in South Africa, but with disappointment in Zambia, which chose an alternate candidate. Thuso Khumalo reports from Johannesburg.

The U.N. refugee agency reports violence in eastern DR Congo has reached a devastating level. Millions have been forced to flee for safety. UNHCR says two years of conflict has uprooted more than 1.3 million people from their homes, bringing the number of internally displaced people in the region to 5.7 million. Lisa Schlein reports from Geneva.

The U.N. Security Council voted for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, and for the first time, the U.S. abstained, allowing the vote to pass14-0. It also demanded the release of all hostages taken captive by Hamas. The resolution drew an immediate protest from Israel which canceled a planned high-level visit to Washington. Jim Zogby, head the Arab-American Institute, discussed the developments with VOA's Mohamed Elshinnawi.

The United Nations Security Council on Monday issued its first demand to halt the fighting in Gaza, calling for a cease-fire during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The resolution passed 14-0 after the U.S. decided not to use its veto power on the resolution, which also demanded the release of all hostages taken captive during Hamas' October 7 surprise attack in southern Israel, but does not make it a condition for the cease-fire. The resolution drew an immediate protest from the Israeli prime minister who canceled a planned visit to Washington by a high-level Israeli delegation.
