  • After Hours AM: A count who loved the dead & Chariots of the Gods
    Love is indeed a spleanded thing...unless the other person is dead! Hour 1 we welcome filmmaker Ronni Thomas, who will be telling the macabre tale of Count Carl von Cosel who lived with a corpse for seven years, No Place for the Living.

    Hour 2 Erich von Däniken set off a firestorm in the late-’60s with the release of his classic Chariots of the Gods, which set forth the proposition that man had his origins in the stars and that his development has been aided by extraterrestrials. Where did von Däniken’s extraordinary notions come? He writes in the preface to the anniversary edition of Chariots of the Gods, “I come from a very Catholic family in Switzerland and my father decided that I would have a theologically-oriented education. So he enrolled 16-year old Erich at Collège St-Michel, a Jesuit boarding school in Fribourg, Switzerland. At that time, my conception of God was magnificent and simultaneously incomprehensible – and has remained so to this day. I always thought God – who or what that was – had to exhibit some minimum features. The true God would be flawless and could do no wrong. He would have to be omnipresent and need no vehicle to get from point A to point B. In particular, God would be timeless. God could not be something that did experiments and then must wait to see what resulted. Those were the thoughts my confused 16-year old brain had about God,” he writes.

  • After Hours AM: Jim Shedden, curator of the Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
    On a theatrically profound edition of After Hours AM/America’s Most Haunted Radio — astonishing paranormal talk with hosts Joel Sturgis and Eric Olsen — we talk with Jim Shedden, curator of the Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Jim joins us at Top of hour2; Hour 1 Joel and Eric review the week’s startling paranormal news from the America’s Most Haunted Twitter feed.
    Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters
    Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters brings together elements from del Toro’s films, objects from his vast personal collections, and objects from the permanent collections of the three institutions that collaborated on the exhibit: Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA). The diverse range of media featured in this exhibition—including sculpture, paintings, prints, photography, costumes, ancient artifacts, books, maquettes and film—totals approximately 500 objects and reflects the broad and alluring scope of del Toro’s inspirations. Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters debuted at the AGO on Sept. 30, 2017 and runs to Jan. 7, 2018.
    Guillermo del Toro (b. 1964) is one of the most inventive filmmakers of his generation. Beginning with Cronos (1993) and continuing through The Devil’s Backbone (2001), Hellboy (2004), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Pacific Rim (2013), Crimson Peak (2015), and the forthcoming The Shape of Water, among many other film, television, and book projects, del Toro has contributed to the reinvention of horror, fantasy and science fiction. Working with a team of craftsmen, artists, and actors—and referencing a wide range of cinematic, pop-culture, and art- historical sources—del Toro recreates the lucid dreams he experienced as a child in Guadalajara, Mexico. He now works globally out of a cherished home base he calls “Bleak House” in the suburbs of Los Angeles.
    “To find beauty in the profane. To elevate the banal. To be moved by genre. These things are vital for my storytelling,” says Guillermo del Toro. “This exhibition presents a small fraction of the things that have moved me, inspired me, and consoled me as I transit through life. It’s a devotional sampling of the enormous love that is required to create, maintain, and love monsters in our lives.”
    The exhibition is organized into eight thematic sections, including:
     Childhood and Innocence, exploring the central role children often play in del Toro’s films;
     Victoriana, loosely referencing the Romantic, Victorian, and Edwardian ages and latter-day interpretation of the Victorian era;
     Rain Room, a recreation of a favorite spot in del Toro’s personal residence (“Bleak House”) where he installed a false window with special effects to simulate a perpetual thunderstorm;
     Magic, Alchemy, and the Occult, exploring the many puzzles, talismans, secret keys and quests for forbidden knowledge that appear in del Toro’s films;
     Movies, Comics and Pop Culture, delving into the scope of his obsession with cinema, from B-movies and horror films to Alfred Hitchcock and Luis Buñuel;
     Frankenstein and Horror, revealing del Toro’s lifelong love affair with the tale of Dr. Frankenstein and his monster;
     Freaks and Monsters, considering del Toro’s fascination with monsters of all types, from those found in horror movies to those in nature, literature, myth and art;
     Death and the Afterlife, which speaks to the disturbing confrontations with death that del Toro experienced growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, in the late 1960s and ’70s.

  • After Hours AM - Nick Redfern Shapeshifters
    On a darkly revealing episode of After Hours AM/America's Most Haunted Radio — scintillating paranormal talk radio Thursdays 9-11pE with hosts Joel Sturgis and Eric Olsen — we welcome legendary paranormal researcher and author Nick Redfern to discuss his latest book, Shapeshifters, and their insidious impact on our real world. We talk with Nick at Top of Hour 2; Hour 1 Joel and Eric review the latest freaky paranormal news from the America's Most Haunted Twitter feed and ponder yet another Halloween come and gone.
    Shapeshifters: Morphing Monsters & Changing Cryptids
    When most people think of shapeshifters, they think of the werewolves and vampires of mythology and pop culture, but the truth is much more disturbing and dangerous. According to legendary paranormal researcher and author Nick Redfern, shapeshifters are real, they come in all kinds and sizes, and they have existed for countless millennia. This mind-boggling, fascinating guide invites you to meet shapeshifters in their many and various forms, from were-cats and blood-suckers to aliens, djinn, fairies, Wendigos and Men in Black. Discover legends and lore from around the world and experience first-hand encounters with shape-changing beasts that lurk in the night. Nick Redfern takes you deep into their domain, opening your eyes to paranormal secrets and cryptozoological wonders.
    For example, in Japan, a shapeshifter is called Kitsune, or a fox. In addition to shifting into the form of an attractive human, a Kitsune can also take the form of a tree or the moon. Based on current research by monster hunters, creatures that are prevalent in popular culture, such as the Loch Ness monster, might actually be shapeshifters. In Native American lore, the coyote is regarded as a shapeshifting trickster.
    According to Redfern, shapeshifters are creatures of the real world, lurking in the shadows, waiting until the right time to strike, reveling in their love of human torment.

  • After Hours AM : Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive writer and director Eric Stange.
    In a Halloweeny and evocative episode of After Hours AM/America's Most Haunted Radio — scintillating paranormal talk radio with hosts Joel Sturgis and Eric Olsen, — we unveil the man behind the image with Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive writer and director Eric Stange. We talk with Eric Top of Hour 2; at Hour 1 Joel and Eric We play new CreepyPasta ghost tales for your Halloween listening pleasure. Plus news from the America's Most Haunted Twitter feed.
    In American Masters' Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive, writer and director Eric Stange draws on Edgar Allan Poe's ineffable imagery and taut plots to tell the real story of the legendary author and poet's life. The dramatic documentary film features Kathleen Turner as narrator and award-winning actor Denis O'Hare (This Is Us, American Horror Story) as Poe; and explores the misleading, deeply entrenched caricature of Poe as morbid alcoholic madman, not unlike the narrators of his horror stories. This caricature is thanks, in large part, to a high-profile obituary filled with falsehoods, written by his literary rival Rufus W. Griswold. The film reveals the way in which Poe tapped into what it means to be an American and human being at the dawning of the modern age.
    Fiercely intelligent and determined to re-invent American literature, Poe was an influential literary critic and magazine editor, inventor of the modern detective story, and refiner of the science fiction genre. Yet, he is remembered primarily for a dozen horror stories and his narrative poem "The Raven." Fittingly, Poe died under mysterious circumstances, but the real question at the heart of this film is why Poe continues to be one of the most popular writers in the history of Western literature, and one of the most misunderstood. The film premieres nationwide Monday, October 30 at 9 p.m. on PBS and will be available to stream the following day, Halloween, via pbs.org/americanmasters and PBS apps.
    Filmed in Boston Harbor's historic Fort Independence at Castle Island, Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive combines dramatized re-enactments with O'Hare of key moments in Poe's life, readings from Poe's works by O'Hare, Oscar-nominated actor Chris Sarandon (The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Princess Bride, Dog Day Afternoon) and actor Ben Schnetzer (Snowden, Goat, Pride) and interviews with authors including Marilynne Robinson (Gilead), Matthew Pearl (The Poe Shadow), Jeffrey Meyers (Edgar Allan Poe: His Life and Legacy) and Zach Dundas (The Great Detective), and director Roger Corman (Poe film cycle including House of Usher) .
