This is kind of a trip down memory lane for your humble narrators. From the big theatrical release this week to the Netflix binge watching. Of course I’m referring to Danny Boyle’s T2 Trainspotting 2 which ties in nicely to our discussion on “Stranger Things” later in the show. Before a short Watch List however, we’ve promising Olvier Assayas for weeks now, and it’s finally here. Kristin Stewart surprises us again in Personal Shopper. Throughout The Watch List, which also includes a disaster of a DePalma film, we often tangent on the awesomeness of Netflix, the structure of television shows and buying a more expensive cup of coffee before hitting the 10% of the library that’s actually good.

This makes three episodes in a row now in which Kurt and Andrew land on exactly the same page in regards to our feelings towards a particular movie. And on that note, sorry not sorry for reviewing the movie that no one saw this weekend, but we couldn’t bring ourselves to spend resources on what looks to be, by most accounts, a washed out, lazy retelling of a Disney new classic. Instead, we jump through some logistical hoops and drive many miles to catch up with a little movie from Britannia titled The Sense of an Ending. It didn’t seem to fully click with most audiences and we have some theories as to why that might be. But around here it is classic Cinecast gold. From there it’s the Watch List. Kurt hit some classic Canadian cinema and caught up with Jerry Seinfeld and his many automotive guests on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee while Andrew finished Peter Berg’s “Mark Wahlberg” trilogy and finally took the time to finish Scorsese’s epic, Silence. A delightful conversation ensues; have a listen!

The "separate the art from the artist" debate rears its head once again, as allegations arise against Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. Star Trek says we'll evolve: can we?

Two big movies getting rave(!) reviews from critics. Andrew and Kurt are less than enthused for at least one of them. I believe the phrase “masterpiece” is being thrown around alot these days for films that will mostly be forgotten in six months. Get Out manages to shake up the mold a little bit and there is some discussion to be had there. But the adoration for Logan is pure bafflement on both sides of the table. Kurt decides the American Western tie-in is a good opportunity to revisit the classic Shane. Andrew takes the race card to a different level with American History X. Also The HBO series keep on coming as well as a Zemeckis throwback from the turn of the millennium. This is a dusty car ride of a Cinecast that, unlike Logan, has a destination and a purpose.

This weeks sees a lot of work to get to and The Mary Sue is going to be none too happy about it. A Cure for Wellness is a bit divisive for your co-hosts this week though we do manage to find some middle ground on some issues. Another Scientology doc – don’t roll your eyes just yet – will be hitting theaters in a limited run over the next few weeks and Andrew and Kurt hash out the interesting film making process in My Scientology Movie more than the subject matter itself. While Kurt played catch-up with last week’s discussion on John Wick Chapter 2, Andrew visited The Great Wall and subesquently found a new favorite theater to see the latest Zhang Yimou picture in which Matt Damon saves China. Kurt points out that Xavier Dolan is somewhat of a kindred spirit to Pedro Almodovar after Andrew sings the praises of Julieta. Everything comes together in an annual praise of Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. Sit back and enjoy. Smell your fingers from time to time, it’s going to be a full one.

While we have two new theatrical reviews this week, the first review is mostly a Kurt monologue while with the second, it’s mostly Andrew’s mic and podium. I expect some disagreement from the peanut gallery in both cases. We talk a little bit about the upcoming summer films of 2017 and how our hope is reinvigorated for the blockbuster. Andrew is still playing some catch up with 2016 including more (yes, more!) Michael Shannon and the controversial personalities of Nate Parker and Mel Gibson. Kurt heads back to 1985 with Mickey Rourke for a couple of hours and is baffled that the bedlam on display was blocked from his memory. In a moment of fantasy speculation, we ponder the effects on the careers of Bruce Willis and Mickey Rourke had their roles been flip-flopped. We’ll be back next week with some of Godzilla’s ancestry in China and some sci-fi body horror from Gore Verbinski.
