The "separate the art from the artist" debate rears its head once again, as allegations arise against Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. Star Trek says we'll evolve: can we?

With Kurt very decidedly out of the country, in a location housing only one movie screen, you’d think there wouldn’t be much to get into; but luckily Andrew is still playing catch-up on 2016 and we actually have, more or less, three full reviews today. First up is a good talk on the origin and evolution of The McDonald’s Corporation with Michael Keaton in The Founder. There’s a little more to this film than at first meets the eye. The Watch List this week is actually more like an extension of the main reviews with The GIrl with All the Gifts still making the festival circuit and available in VOD in some markets as well as arguably the performance of the year in Christine – and no it’s not a 1958 Plymouth Fury. Some tangents on other culture’s movie-going habits, the weather and William Fichtner makes for an all-around delightful show!

Finally back to business with actual, theatrical reviews. The boys were able to catch two this week with Theodore Melfi’s Hidden Figures and Adam Driver starring in Paterson. For the former, the “Bottle Shock” effect perhaps works in the film’s favor. For the latter, by not spoiling anything, we kind of spoil it; it’ll make sense after a listen. Despite some reminiscing on the passing of one of The Cinecast’s favorite character actors in Miguel Ferrer, we are able to find the bright side and general positivity throughout the rest of the show that also includes a short Watch List of faux documentaries, a film debut from a now well-known and respected director, and… well, the mastication of feces – but at least it was on 35mm. Sit back and enjoy the bus ride!

For those of you claiming that 2016 was a bummer of a year – a notion we don’t subscribe to on this show – looking at the 12 months in front of us, from a cinematic point of view, looks to be rather promising. A hodge-podge of lists assembled here and spoken out of order (or with no order at all) in the messy fashion that we’ve become accustomed to, get us actually pretty amped up for the next ~365 days. Boyle and Polanski and horror and genre and westerns and robots and Koreans and Scandinavians… oh and Star Wars. There’s a lot to be hopeful about!
