Over the past week, 4BC Afternoons has shone a spotlight on energy in Australia.

Today's focus is on the relationship between gas and electricity prices. 

Principal Advisor at the Australia Institute, Mark Ogge told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "80% of gas mined in Australia is exported."

"So people who you've spoken to who think that the problem is renewables are wrong, because gas is the fuel that often sets the electricity price and because it's so expensive it's driving up electricity prices."

"When you get your energy bills you should blame the gas industry," Mr Ogge continued.

Coal seam gas company Arrow Energy has withdrawn plans to drill 14 gas wells on four properties in the Springvale region, with only two lots now set for deviated wells.

Springvale farmers are celebrating the decision as a major win in their fight against coal seam gas drilling on prime farmland, despite Arrow Energy maintaining a presence in the area.

Farmer in the Darling Downs region, Russell Bennie told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "There's a lot of farmers around here who are still in disbelief about the way that our farmland can be degraded by the mining companies with the support of the Queensland Government as well."

Brisbane-based Kimaritec won gold for 'Investability' at the Innovators Pitch Challenge in San Francisco. 

Kimaritec creates small molecules that trigger the cancer cell’s protein recycling system to eliminate essential proteins, leading to the death of the cancer cells.

Amid soaring energy bills, food distributors are urging the Albanese Government to abandon renewable energy goals and prioritise lowering energy costs for businesses.

The fishing industry is concerned the Albanese government has overlooked a pledge to make all hospitality venues display the origin of the seafood on their menus.

The ‘country of origin’ practice was originally set to begin in July, as the federal election approaches, Industry Minister Ed Husic is under pressure to act quickly and deliver on the promise.

CEO of the Seafood Industry Association, Veronica Papacosta told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, "At the moment we import 64% of the seafood that we consume in Australia."

"Australians need to be able to decide which one they choose. They need to be able to tell which one. So when you walk into a restaurant, pub or club, it's not on the menu, it's in your retail shop, but not in your food service venues. And that's been the push," Ms Papacosta continued.
