When a Pastor Is No Longer Qualified: Qualifications, Disqualification & the Abuse of Spiritual Authority
What does it actually mean for a man to be qualified to serve as a pastor—and what happens when his life and character demonstrate that he is no longer qualified?
In this episode of Against the Flow, Alex and Arun take a serious look at the biblical qualifications for pastors and elders, asking whether churches sometimes place too much emphasis on a man’s gifting, charisma, preaching ability, or public ministry while overlooking the character requirements Scripture places at the center of spiritual leadership.
Using the recent Netflix docuseries Death of the Pastor’s Wife as a starting point, Alex and Arun discuss the tragic story of Mica Miller and the allegations of coercive control, manipulation, abuse, and the misuse of pastoral authority presented in the series. The documentary raises difficult questions about what happens when the person entrusted to shepherd others becomes a source of harm rather than protection.
But the conversation goes beyond one pastor or one church.
What do passages such as 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1, and 1 Peter 5 actually require of a pastor? Is being a gifted preacher enough? What does it mean to be “above reproach,” “self-controlled,” “gentle,” “not domineering,” and able to manage one’s household well? And when serious patterns of misconduct emerge, should a pastor simply receive counseling and continue in ministry—or can certain patterns of behavior disqualify someone from pastoral leadership?
Alex and Arun also explore the responsibility of elders, congregations, and Christian communities to recognize warning signs, confront sin, protect vulnerable people, and hold spiritual leaders accountable.
This is ultimately a conversation about character over charisma, shepherding over control, accountability over celebrity, and the responsibility that comes with spiritual authority.
How should the church respond when a pastor’s public ministry looks healthy while his private life tells a very different story?
Join Alex and Arun as they tackle one of the most uncomfortable questions facing the modern church:

Pain, loss, suffering and grief are just some of the things that a follower of Christ has to endure. As Christians we are not immune to these seasons of life. in some Christian circles, it seems that these life stages are suppressed or dismissed entirely. We as a body of believers need to do better in our response to those who are hurting. Please join Alex and Arun, with their SPECIAL GUEST, Wandi Ortiz, as they try to peel through some of these layers.

Alex and Arun jump in one a new episode to discuss a little about need for a risen Christ. They also jump into a needful chat about the maligning of the name of Jesus by the likes for the White House Faith advisor. The utter silence from most leading "evangelical pastors" is deafening. We are pretty sure of the the level of out cry and wailing we would be subjected to, if it was a WH Faith advisor of the opposing political party. Followers of Christ need to stand up and speak up against this usurpation of biblical Christianity into something that is unrecognizable.
Have a blessed Resurrection Sunday!

Arun jumps in on a quick pod to share a few thoughts on Palm Sunday and the nature of Jesus who intentionally positions Himself as a Humble Servant and NOT a political or military ruler. The fact that the religious leaders of the day had turned the "House of prayer" into a "den of thieves", is explored briefly. This tracks with what a lot of current "institutionalized churches" have brazenly adopted, with no fear of God. A disgraceful misrepresentation of the Gospel. While in one breath they say "Maranatha", in the very next one are breathlessly advocating for building their multi-million earthly empires.

How do we hold each other biblically accountable without falling into self righteousness or shame? Alex and Arun have another little honest conversation about biblical correction and grace and touch on the lack of biblical accountability amongst most modern church systems today.

Alex and Arun get together for another honest conversation and address a few of topics that churches seem to avoid. Join us as we discuss some of the ideals that have crept into the Church making it more of a corporate entity rather than a true biblical Body of Christ. We hit a few topics and there are many more, but we hope this might be a starting point to more conversations.
Hope this helps you in your faith journey in a little way.

Alex and Arun dive into another conversation that could easily have been 6 hours long. Here we explore just a few aspects of the MEGA church culture, celebrity pastors, insecurity in ministry and other related topics. We try to highlight and define what the biblical purpose of a Christ centered church should look like and how one can deviate rapidly from the "great commission".
We look forward to your feedback and pray that this episode invokes a biblical re-think of sorts and encourages an honest evaluation.

Yes. We are still here. Getting back on the horse here with the second part to our chat with our dear brother, Ben Rosario. We pray that this conversation brings you to a better understanding of ministering to the broken in the streets of our cities, being the "hands and feet of Jesus" and proclaiming the Gospel in that. Our constant desire is to continue to minister to "the least of these".
