  • Bahia Survived the Night. Then She Had to Learn Why Nobody Else Did.
    After Bahia Bakari was pulled from the Indian Ocean, the immediate survival crisis ended. A different ordeal began. She was hospitalized with a fractured collarbone, burns, bruising, and exhaustion, while authorities confirmed that the other one hundred fifty two people aboard Yemenia Flight Six Two Six had died. The official accident record lists one serious injury and one hundred fifty two fatalities.
    Investigators then faced a difficult reconstruction. The aircraft had struck the sea at night about eighteen kilometers from Moroni airport, and major parts of the wreckage lay roughly twelve hundred meters underwater. The flight recorders were eventually recovered and the final investigation concluded that the aircraft stalled during an interrupted visual approach after a series of crew actions and failures to maintain awareness of the aircraft's flight path.
    Bahia had survived the accident. Part two asks a harder question: what happens when survival leaves one person carrying a story that everyone else aboard could no longer tell?

  • Bahia Was Traveling With Her Mother. She Came Home Alone.
    In June two thousand nine, twelve year old Bahia Bakari was traveling with her mother from France to the Comoros when Yemenia Flight Six Two Six crashed into the Indian Ocean during a nighttime approach to Moroni.
    Bahia survived the impact and found herself alone in dark, rough water with an injured shoulder and almost no swimming ability. She grabbed a piece of floating wreckage and held on through the night while search teams struggled to locate survivors across the crash area.
    More than twelve hours later, rescuers saw a child among the debris. Of the one hundred fifty three people aboard, Bahia was the only person they would bring back alive.

  • Jan Baalsrud Could No Longer Walk. Seventy Strangers Carried Him Home.
    In March nineteen forty three, Norwegian commando Jan Baalsrud returned to German occupied Norway as part of Operation Martin, a sabotage and resistance mission involving twelve men aboard the fishing vessel Brattholm. The operation was compromised almost immediately. German forces attacked the vessel, and eleven members of the mission were killed, captured, or later executed. Baalsrud was the only member to escape.
    What followed lasted sixty three days. Baalsrud crossed freezing water, traveled through mountains in winter, survived an avalanche, suffered snow blindness and severe frostbite, and eventually became unable to continue without help. His escape gradually stopped being the story of one fugitive and became a clandestine rescue operation involving ordinary Norwegian civilians and Sámi reindeer herders who risked their own lives under occupation.
    This is not simply the story of how one man refused to die. It is the story of how many people repeatedly decided that one stranger was worth saving.

  • Vesna Remembered Nothing. Everyone Else on the Plane Was Gone.
    On January twenty sixth, nineteen seventy two, twenty three year old flight attendant Vesna Vulović was working aboard JAT Flight Three Six Seven when the aircraft broke apart over Czechoslovakia. Twenty seven people died. Vesna was the only survivor. Guinness World Records recognizes her as having survived a fall of ten thousand one hundred sixty meters without a parachute.

    She was discovered inside wreckage near the village of Srbská Kamenice with devastating injuries, including fractures to her skull, pelvis, legs, ribs, and spine. She initially suffered paralysis but eventually learned to walk again.

    The official investigation attributed the aircraft's destruction to an explosion. Later alternative theories disputed parts of the official account, but Guinness continues to recognize Vesna's record.

  • At Eleven Years Old, Terry Jo Was the Only One Left
    In November nineteen sixty one, eleven year old Terry Jo Duperrault was sailing through the Bahamas aboard the charter yacht Bluebelle with her parents, brother, and younger sister. On the final night of the trip, she awoke to a violent event aboard the vessel. Hours later, Bluebelle was sinking and Terry Jo was alone.

    She escaped onto a tiny cork float with no food, drinking water, or shelter. For more than three days she drifted beneath the sun before an officer aboard the Greek freighter Captain Theo noticed something almost invisible among the whitecaps.

    Terry Jo survived the ocean. Only afterward would investigators begin establishing what had happened to the rest of her family.

  • Tami Woke Up Alone. Richard Was No Longer on the Boat.
    In September nineteen eighty three, twenty three year old sailor Tami Oldham and her fiancé, Richard Sharp, left Tahiti aboard the yacht Hazana, delivering it toward San Diego. Both were experienced sailors. About twenty days into the crossing, Hurricane Raymond overtook them with enormous seas and hurricane force winds.

    The yacht capsized. Tami was knocked unconscious, and when she woke, Richard was gone. Hazana had lost its masts, navigation electronics were damaged, and no radio call ever reached another vessel. Using a sextant, a recovered watch, a makeshift sail, and her sailing experience, Tami began navigating toward Hawaii.

    She would spend forty one days alone at sea before reaching Hilo.

  • Her Heart Had Stopped. The Doctors Still Refused to Give Up.
    On May twentieth, nineteen ninety nine, twenty nine year old physician Anna Bågenholm was skiing with two colleagues near Narvik, Norway, when she fell headfirst through ice covering a mountain stream. Her body became trapped beneath the ice, but she found a small pocket of air and remained conscious for roughly forty minutes.

    By the time rescuers freed her after about eighty minutes, she had suffered circulatory arrest and her core temperature had fallen to thirteen point seven degrees Celsius. Doctors at Tromsø University Hospital used cardiopulmonary bypass to slowly rewarm her blood, and her heart eventually began beating again.

    Her recovery became an important example of why profound accidental hypothermia can sometimes change how doctors judge seemingly unsurvivable cardiac arrest.
