  • EM&B #159: Toddler Health
I know there’s a number of young mothers out there looking for information on how to help raise your children in a healthy manner.  Who doesn’t want to give our youth an advantage at living a healthier lifestyle?
I asked Janabai Amsden who is the own of Rawvolution which is a raw food restaurant in Santa Monica California to come on the show and share some tips on how to raise healthy children from the get go!
    Toddler Health with Janabai Amsden
I first met Janabai when I wandered into her restaurant while visiting Santa Monica; it was apparent as soon as I walked in this was a different restaurant. Not just because there were serving raw food but because of the atmosphere.  Honestly it looked like half the people weren’t even eating (or had finished eating awhile ago) and were just sitting, enjoying their company and the atmosphere they were in.
I must say it was astounding how welcoming the energy was in the whole place.  I enjoyed it so much I wanted to know who created such a place, so I asked one of the employees who the owner was. Sure enough, here walks by Janabai who offered to come over to our table, talked to us for a few minutes and then actually suggested other raw food restaurants in the area. I couldn’t believe how generous she was after just meeting her. Most owners don’t give you the time of day let alone come over and spend some time with you.  So of course I had to invite her on the show.
Something we haven’t talked about before, is a subject I’m interested in myself. I get questions all the time on toddler health and to I’m certainly not an expert so I can’t wait to share this interview will all the new mothers I know out there who are looking to raise their children with more healthy options.
    Show Notes

    * Starting your children out right by introducing them to health options early in age
    * Your child’s first food (Janabai used coconut)
    * Introduce spices and fermented foods
    * Use olive oil, avocado oil and coconut oil early and often
    * Offer children green juices when they are young
    * Let your child choose their favorite veggie, often we assume our child won’t eat something when they haven’t even tried it
    * In social situations play the host and offer healthy options, you’d be surprised how much children will eat and enjoy given the chance
    * What is at the eye level for your children. Make it easy for them to choose healthy
    * Communicate with other like minded parents
    * Offer your children herbal tea and make it fun!

    Thank you
I just want to say a special thank you to Janabai for coming on the show and offering some of these fantastic tips for us. Some I personally haven’t thought of and I’m sure we can all work toward at least preparing to improve toddler health at an early age so we can get them started out with all the advantages possible.
Thank you for checking out another show, I hope you found it valuable and I’ll look forward to having you with us for the next show!
If you want more information on Janabai or where she’s located you can check out her website here, or find her on Facebook and Twitter.

  • EM&B #158: Rawtarian
So every once in awhile I get the urge to try Raw food, recently I just came back from a health conference and some of the main topics were enyzymes so naturally raw food was often talked about.  So with my inspiration with raw food at it’s peak I look for some easy raw burger recipes and what website pops up….Rawtarian.
This isn’t the first time either. Not too long ago I would experiment with entire raw food days. I should note, this isn’t a far stretch because most of my meals throughout the day are raw to begin with. I wanted to know what my body would feel like with entire raw food days. I can’t say I’ve had huge successes with this. My meals rarely turn out, they seem to take a LONG time and I’m not exactly satisfied with my creation.
So after research, seeming endless hours of preparation and waiting, it doesn’t seem worth it.  I bring my experience up because I’m sure many others go through the same thing not only with raw food but with preparing healthy food in general. See the thing is, if you’re not used to preparing something it’s going to be slightly difficult until it gets easier.  This is one of the points Laura-Jane points out in the interview.
Before I get too in depth I’d like to share more information about Laura-Jane aka Rawtarian so you know who the interview is coming from:
Laura-Jane is the leading creator of simple, satisfying raw food recipes. She has her own podcast, is both a food blogger and speaker and has had her recipes featured in the huffington post.  She also shares over 100 free recipes on her main webpage Rawtarian.
    Laura-Jane Rawtarian
    Show Notes:

    * Rawtarian Laura-Jane opens the show by talking about how she began as a raw food, vegan. It all started with a 30 Day challenge which carried on from there.
    * Equipment is important if you want to be a rawtarian. Laura-Jane talks about a Blender, Food Processor and Dehydrator.

Our Rawtarian was gracious enough to share some incredibly wonderful links with us, the first one is a brownie recipe, full recipe click HERE.

And the second one is a green smoothie, full recipe click HERE.

    Thank you
I just wanted to say a special thank you to Laura-Jane for coming on the show with me. She’s an incredibly delightful person, and I more than enjoyed our interview together. Thanks so much for your time and valuable information Ms. Rawtarian.
And thank you as well, for your interest in this Episode of Exploring Mind and Body. I hope this show takes you closer to becoming rawtarian yourself.
For more information on Laura-Jane you can check her facebook page, twitter and she even has her very own App, check it out!

  • EM&B #157: Primal Blueprint
Primal blueprint is the topic on today show and I want to start off with a quote from Mark Sisson, which is ultimately the reason I reached out and requested an interview with him.
My mission is to empower people to take responsibility for their own health and enjoyment of life by investigating, discussing and critically rethinking every thing we’ve assumed to be health and wellness – Mark Sisson.
This is an incredible statement and one I couldn’t resonate with more. I teach this myself and was a little shocked to see it written on Mark’s website. Of course Mark has been around much longer than I have and has been teaching this philosophy for years.
The truth of the matter is, what we used to do, rarely works anymore; what we thought was accurate really isn’t.  And with the decrease in our health, increase in prescription drugs and no organization i.e. the government, FDA, etc, that seems to care, it’s time to rethink what we’ve been taught and really consider the information given to us.
Mark is 61 years old (at the time of our interview) and leads by example, he lives what he teaches and to me there’s no better or more qualified type of person.

Mark Sisson being active and enjoying an active lifestyle
Marks philosophy and where the Primal Blueprint came from:
    What is your health philosophy?
Really, my health philosophy is surprisingly simple. I follow a diet based on an understanding of evolutionary science. I think it’s more important to eat, move, and live according to how humans are designed and not according to society’s artificial developments of the last 100 years. Fortunately, this type of lifestyle is not only incredibly healthy, it’s quite simple.
    In a nutshell:

    * Fresh, nutrient dense, high antioxidant, preferably locally grown/naturally raised food choices
    * Daily activity – whether it’s the gym or a walk along the beach, it all counts
    * Plenty of quality sleep, sun exposure, play, and intellectual stimulation
    * Avoid all sweets and sweetened beverages. Once you break free, they lose their allure
    * Time for fun – don’t take anything too seriously
    * Ethical behavior – because what goes around comes around
    * Taking responsibility for yourself and your life – openness to new things and ideas

*This write up about Mark’s philosophy on his own personal primal blueprint is used from Mark’s Daily Apple which has tons of valuable information and insights on how to follow a more natural lifestyle from to nutrition to fitness, which is of course what Marks calls your Primal Blueprint.

  • EPISODE #156 Alkaline vs Acidic
Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Ron Garner tonight on Exploring Mind and Body who was an absolute pleasure to have on the show!  Ron’s most recent book The Disease Free Revolution was going to be the main topic unit we realized how much information there is to share with all of you, so we decided to narrow down our topic.  Ron is going to share with us the difference between acidic and alkaline state in our bodies but before we get into too much detail here is a little more information about Ron:
Ron Garner (BEd, MSc) – Bio
    • Is a health researcher, educator, and author. (Prior to retirement in 1976, he held senior

positions in public school district administration in Canada)
    • Has written 4 books on Natural Health, beginning in 2001

o After the Doctors…What Can You Do?

o The 4 Keys to a Long Life

o Conscious Health – won the Nautilus Award in the US, as “The best health and

    healing book for 2006”
    • In mid-50s gave up on conventional medical and pharmaceutical remedies because they

were not correcting the causes of his health problems.

    • Began researching and applying natural health solutions in his own search for health

    • Now at age 76, is very active and enjoying some of the best health of his life

    • Wants to share what he has discovered with others so they can escape the present

disease trap our society is in, and know that vibrant and long-lasting health is possible.
Alkaline vs acidic state with award winning author Ron Garner

    Notable Notes:
I had the pleasure of meeting Ron in person, which is unlike many of my author interviews, and what a great guy. He really is; he’s written his books to improve others’ well being and it’s as simple as that.
A couple of my favorite parts about Ron’s presentation/book is first of all that, you shouldn’t expect your health decline as you get older, and that you should expect disease in your life.  I feel that so many of us are waiting for our health to decline as we age, we almost expect it. It’s hard no to believe this when you hear so many people say, “I’m getting too old for this”, which is one of my least favorite things to hear.
I hope you get a chance to pick up Ron’s book, it really will improve your life.
Ron Garner and myself talking about his new book Disease Free Revolution
If you’d like to leave any comments down below, I’d love to hear from you. What’s your favorite natural health book?

  • Improving your quality of life
Improving your quality of life is something we think is a feat too hard to even fathom.  I’m not able to tell you how many times I hear someone talk about how there was no time for this, there was no time for that. We’ve been over that before recently, this write up isn’t going to be about priorities or how much time we really have. I just want to shine some light on the fact that if we really want something, if we’re willing to sacrifice and put in the hard work, then you can achieve it.
It baffles me how so many of us believe we can run on an empty tank, how we can never take a break, how we don’t relax and think we’re at our best. Could you imagine being a marathon runner and putting yourself through an excruciating difficult workout regimen every single day for a week before your competition? It simply doesn’t work, you’d be drained, exhausted and wouldn’t last.
I know we feel overwhelmed, I know there is too much to do, and I know we don’t think there is time for anything other than getting through the day. But we can all make small changes to improve our life. We can all eat out one less time a week, we can find one thing to do to be more active in the morning or in the evening and we can all believe just a little bit that we’re slowly progressing in the direction we want to go.
See, if you really want to provide for your family, be strong for your children, if you want to be that beloved spouse you thought about being on your wedding day, it takes progressions to get to where you want to go. Don’t think about it, don’t debate, I’d even caution too much planning. Take one step today, right now, and start your new life you’ve dreamed of, because there’s no better time than right now.

  • Perspecitive (blog post)
Perspective plays a more significant role in our lives than we think. In fact, perspective may be everything. If you see weight loss as being a constant struggle, a never ending uphill battle, something that you absolutely dread, than it is. If you truly believe money is the enemy, it’s the root of all evil, crooks are the only ones that have it, then that’s your perspective. It’s going to be difficult for any type of financial abundance to come your way, until you change your perspective.
The bigger cities get a bad name for friendliness because there is so many people around, who has time to stop and say hi. Excuse me all you New Yorkers but when I was playing ball, I played with guys from all over the world and New Yorkers seemed to have the least amount of, let’s say politeness for lack of a better word. I could tell within 5 mins of a conversation where they were from simply from their attitude and accent. But remember this is perspective, to them, or others that live in the same place, that’s their normal, they don’t see themselves as being rude or boisterous.
I lived in LA for a year before I moved away and I suppose I could have been the stereotype, I really wasn’t interested in talking to too many people, kept to myself, didn’t talk to a stranger for the life of me. And of course you feel the same way, you think people don’t want to talk to you, you think they don’t have time for you, that other people from the area are rude or impolite; whatever it may be this is your perspective, it certainly was mine.
It was different this last time I visited; I’d say I matured in a significant manner since the last time I was there. It wasn’t too long ago but I’d say my business career (which I’ll talk about in another post) transformed me as a person in so many ways. I’m more open to talking to people, as I was in LA and surprise surprise, people talked back. I’d ask for directions and people would go out of their way to help out. I asked this one guy on the street and he stopped, pulled out his phone, looked up the address and then put it in his gps to find out how I would get there. I half though he was going to offer to drive me there.
This happened time and time again and I continued to be surprised because my perspective was, people around here don’t have time for me, they aren’t interested in talking, in helping out so why waste my time. With a slightly different outlook on life or perspective if you will, I figure what do I have to lose by asking. Some is going to answer or they’re not, they’re going to help or they’ll carry on and I’ll be in no worse off place than before I asked.
When I lived in Germany for 7 months I expected cold, angry people you see in the movies. I found some of the warmest friendliest people I’ve ever met.
See everything is perspective and it could change your life. It certainly affects your life right now, increasing your quality of life or the exact opposite. If you’re looking to change something in your life, whether it be finances, health or simply making life easier, look to your perspective first. Look to how you see things, what you think about certain situations, people and circumstances.
Henry Ford said, weather you believe you can or you can’t your right. I’d say the same thing about perspective. Weather you believe it’s so or not, you’ll be right every time.

  • Adult Bullying (blog post)
You know what’s sad, is that grown adults still bully. What may be worse, grown adults allow themselves to be bullied. I mean when you’re a child it’s hard to understand what’s right and what isn’t. Sure you’re uncomfortable but how can you do anything about it. I mean, at times it feels like there are so many leaches in this world, people that want to suck the life out of you….

  • EM&B #154: Following Your Dreams
Following your dreams is the topic on Exploring Mind and Body because it seems like so many people are afraid to go after what they really want in life. I want to share this personal story with you because I feel so many are afraid to take a chance, they’re worried about what others will think, they’re worried about ‘not making it’, or simply failing when there is no reason to fear these things. I mean, excuse me while I contradict myself. Sure there’s fear but fear makes you alive it awakens your soul, it gives you a reason to be alert and awake and be on the edge of your seat. And I don’t mean any actual danger here, I mean what would be success without failure. Think about that, what if there was no real chance of you failing, wouldn’t life be boring? Have you ever played any type of competition where you won over and over again and the games weren’t even close? That’s not fun and neither is life if you’re too afraid to experience, follow your dreams, feel defeat and anguish and what it’s like to take a step back.
We all have the opportunity to live the life of our dreams, we all have choices every single day. It’s up to us to take a leap of faith to decide this is what we’ll do and nothing will get in our way. To me there’s no other way to live, but what’s great about this life, we all choose our destiny with every decision we make.
Life isn’t preplanned, you don’t have one choice from a higher power, we all choose and although I believe there’s something out there more powerful than us, something watching over us, I also believe we’re given free choice every single day we wake up.
