As quoted by Daily Mail, an excerpt of the upcoming biography said the queen's comment on Harry, being 'a little over-in-love', 'was as far as she came – to my knowledge at least - to ever uttering a word against the new Duchess of Sussex'. When Prince Harry announced he was marrying Meghan, the late British monarch was 'really happy', according to the book, Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, that will be published in December.

The queen told Meghan she could continue her career, ""You can carry on being an actress if you like – that's your profession, after all."" However, when Meghan said she would quit acting to dedicate herself to Royal service, the queen was 'delighted'.

As per the earlier traditions, ladies-in-waiting were required to attend the Queen all the time. But with Camilla, it will be a more occasional and informal position. They will be helping the Queen Consort only at public events and will not involve correspondence or administration.

Apart from that, they will be part of Camilla's team at official engagements but will not be included in replying to letters or day-to-day planning.

Moreover, they won't receive a salary but their expenses will be covered.

Replacing the role of lady-in-waiting will end a feature of court life going back to the middle ages, with such close personal helpers of a Queen often coming from aristocratic families and, over the centuries, sometimes caught up in court intrigue, a BBC report cited.

This symbolic change of direction will be put into practice next week, when the Queen Consort hosts a reception for campaigners against domestic violence and violence against women.

Queen died while suffering from cancer, author says

Queen Elizabeth was suffering through cancer in the last months of her life, according to well-connected author Gyles Brandreth. Brandreth, in his new book Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait—as reported by the Daily Mail—writes: “I had heard that the queen had a form of myeloma—bone marrow cancer—which would explain her tiredness and weight loss and those ‘mobility issues’ we were often told about during the last year or so of her life.

“The most common symptom of myeloma is bone pain, especially in the pelvis and lower back, and multiple myeloma is a disease that often affects the elderly. Currently, there is no known cure, but treatment—including medicines to help regulate the immune system and drugs that help prevent the weakening of the bones—can reduce the severity of its symptoms and extend the patient’s survival by months or two to three years.” (The queen’s death certificate recorded that she had died of old age.)

In the days preceding her death on September 8, 2022, Brandreth writes that the queen had Sunday lunch with the Right Reverend Dr Iain Greenshields, the vicar of the local Braemar and Crathie Parish Church. “They talk about the queen’s childhood, her horses, church affairs (she is ‘well up to speed’) and her sadness at what is happening in Ukraine.” She also spoke to Clive Cox, one of her favorite racehorse trainers, as well as meeting at Balmoral an outgoing Prime Minister (Boris Johnson) and anointing a new one (Liz Truss, whose tenure ended up being the shortest of any prime minister).

On that day, a last poignant picture of the queen was taken.

History

Although the LDP was formally created in 1955, its antecedents can be traced back to political parties of the 19th century. These parties formed before Japan even had a constitution, a parliament, or elections and were primarily protest groups against the government. One of these was the Jiyūtō (Liberal Party), formed in 1881, which advocated a radical agenda of democratic reform and popular sovereignty. The Rikken Kaishintō (Constitutional Reform Party) was a more moderate alternative, formed in 1882, advocating parliamentary democracy along British lines. Party names and alliances continued to be fluid after the first elections in 1890, eventually leading to the creation of Rikken Seiyūkai (Friends of Constitutional Government) and Seiyūkai’s main rival, which operated under several names: Shimpotō (Progressive Party), Kenseikai (Constitutional Party), and finally Minseitō (Democratic Party). With the rise of militarism in Japan, however, the political parties lost influence. In 1940 they disbanded, and many of their members joined the government-sponsored Imperial Rule Assistance Association (Taisei Yokusankai).

The Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945 was followed by a decade of political confusion. New parties were formed from the remnants of the old ones: the Liberal Party built on the old Seiyūkai, whereas the Progressive Party drew on factions of both the Seiyūkai and the Minseitō. The party system was highly fluid, with parties frequently merging or dissolving. For example, from 1945 to 1954 the Progressive Party changed its name four times, becoming the Democratic Party in 1947, the National Democratic Party in 1950, the Reform Party in 1952, and finally the Japan Democratic Party in 1954. In 1947–48 this party also joined with the Socialist Party to form a brief coalition government under the auspices of the U.S.-led occupation of Japan (1945–52).

At war’s end he was a distant witness of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. In 1947 Nakasone was elected to the lower house of the Diet (parliament), becoming one of the youngest persons ever to hold a seat in that body. He retained his seat in subsequent elections and successively held several cabinet posts, including that of transport (1967–68), defense (1970–71), and international trade and industry (1972–74).

After Prime Minister Suzuki Zenko resigned (October 1982), Nakasone, an ally of the powerful Tanaka Kakuei, won a four-way contest to become the president of the LDP and thus, by reason of that party’s dominance, prime minister of Japan. He was formally elected prime minister by the Japanese Diet in November 1982. The political opposition was able to force early parliamentary elections in December 1983. The LDP lost its absolute majority, but Nakasone kept his office by forming a coalition cabinet.

As prime minister, Nakasone sought to strengthen Japan’s ties with the United States by increasing Japan’s contribution to its own defense and by lowering Japanese trade barriers to American goods. His efforts to increase defense spending aroused considerable controversy in Japan. Outspokenly patriotic, Nakasone tried to enhance Japan’s reputation as one of the world’s leading economic powers by making frequent overseas trips to confer with Japan’s allies. On the domestic scene, he sponsored a program of government austerity measures in an effort to reduce Japan’s public debt.

In October 1984 Nakasone was reaffirmed as president of the LDP, thus gaining a second term as prime minister. "he-moment idea that sprang up during a social gathering of Lucretia Mott, a Quaker preacher and veteran social activist, Martha Wright (Mott’s sister), Mary Ann McClintock, Jane Hunt, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the wife of an abolitionist and the only non-Quaker in the group. The convention was planned with five days’ notice, publicized only by a small unsigned advertisement in a local newspaper.

Stanton drew up the “Declaration of Sentiments” that guided the Seneca Falls Convention. Using the Declaration of Independence as her guide to proclaim that “all men and women [had been] created equal,” she drafted 11 resolutions, including the most radical demand—the right to the vote. With Frederick Douglass, a former slave, arguing eloquently on their behalf, all 11 resolutions passed, and Mott even won approval of a final declaration “for the overthrowing of the monopoly of the pulpit, and for the securing to woman equal participation with men in the various trades, professions and commerce.”

Yet by emphasizing education and political rights that were the privileges of the upper classes, the embryonic feminist movement had little connection with ordinary women cleaning houses in Liverpool or picking cotton in Georgia. The single nonwhite woman’s voice heard at this time—that of Sojourner Truth, a former slave—symbolized the distance between the ordinary and the elite. Her famous “Ain’t I a Woman” speech was delivered in 1851 before the Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, but Truth did not dedicate her life to women’s rights. Instead, she promoted abolitionism and a land-distribution program for other former slaves. In the speech, Truth remarked, “That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain’t I a woman?”

Although Seneca Falls was followed by women’s rights conventions in other states, the interest spurred by those first moments of organizing quickly faded. Concern in the United States turned to the pending Civil War, while in Europe the reformism of the 1840s gave way to the repression of the late 1850s. When the feminist movement rebounded, it became focused on a single issue, women’s suffrage, a goal that would dominate international feminism for almost 70 years.

"ification of slavery as a system, which followed Portuguese trafficking of enslaved Africans beginning in the 15th century, was driven by the European colonies in North America, South America, and the West Indies, where the plantation economy generated an immense demand for low-cost labour. Between the 16th and 19th centuries an estimated total of 12 million enslaved Africans were forcibly transported to the Americas. The brutality of slavery, made increasingly visible by the scale of its practice, sparked a reaction that insisted on its abolition altogether.

Origin of the abolition movement

The abolition movement began with criticism by rationalist thinkers of the Enlightenment of slavery’s violation of the “rights of man.” Quaker and other, evangelical religious groups condemned it for its un-Christian qualities. By the late 18th century moral disapproval of slavery was widespread, and antislavery reformers won a number of deceptively easy victories during this period. In Britain, Granville Sharp secured a legal decision in 1772 that West Indian planters could not hold slaves in Britain, because slavery was contrary to English law. In the United States, all the states north of Maryland abolished slavery between 1777 and 1804. But antislavery sentiments had little effect on the centres of slavery themselves: the massive plantations of the Deep South, the West Indies, and South America. Turning their attention to these areas, British and American abolitionists began working in the late 18th century to prohibit the importation of enslaved Africans into the British colonies and the United States. Under the leadership of William Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson, these forces succeeded in getting the slave trade to the British colonies abolished in 1807. The United States prohibited the importation of slaves that same year, though widespread smuggling continued until about 1862.

Antislavery forces then concentrated on winning the emancipation of those populations already in slavery. They were triumphant when slavery was abolished in the British West Indies by 1838 and in French possessions 10 years later.
