Opposition spokesperson for Justice Karol Aquilina insisted that the bill will introduce abortion in Malta, adding that the used wording will not protect mothers and doctors during interventions to protect a woman’s life.

The two speakers were among deputies from both sides of Parliament which is debating the bill in the Second Reading.

Minister Fearne, who presented the bill, added that the bill can be amended so that the decision in each case is taken by more than one doctor, as it is the practice in hospital procedures. He also suggested that the procedures may be examined by Parliament’s Health Committee because they define concepts, such as what constitutes grievous danger to the mother’s life.

Dr Fearne stated that there were suggestions that the bill is restricted to mothers who have medical physical complications only and not also mental. He said that mental health complications may also be serious and appealed for the end of the notion that mental health issues are not serious issues.

He argued that it is untrue that with this amendment, the country will open the door for abortion and stressed that abortion will remain illegal, adding that as a pediatric he is one of the least persons in Malta to see that the life of a baby is capriciously lost. He explained some complications that a woman may face during pregnancy in which the choice of the doctor will be either to save the mother’s life, or whether to leave the mother and, consequently the baby in the womb, to both die.

While saying that the bill will introduce abortion in the country, Opposition spokesperson Karol Aquilina said that the current legislation on abortion have been in force for years and were always interpreted to mean that, if there is a situation where the woman’s life is in danger and the baby has to be lost, neither the doctor nor the mother will be subjected to criminal charges.

Referring to the case of Andrea Prudente, he said that from the photo uploaded on the social media on her way abroad to undergo abortion, it appears that her life was not in danger. He added that in the constitutional case she filed against Malta, the State Attorney said that Prudente was never in danger of losing her life and, therefore, this shows that the justification of this bill never existed and will not exist.

Dr Aquilina also read the names of 81 academics, experts and doctors who joined forces and issued their position against the government’s amendment. He added that a woman with a physical or mental condition who, however, may give birth should not be allowed to end the pregnancy. He appealed to the Lab

Official records say the longest-reigning monarch in British history died from old age at 96, but Gyles Brandreth, writing in Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, said she had a form of bone marrow cancer called multiple myeloma in the last period of her life.

An extract of the biography published in the Daily Mail explores how Brandeth, reportedly a close friend of Prince Phillip, said he had heard Queen Elizabeth II had myeloma, ""which would explain her tiredness and weight loss and those 'mobility issues' we were often told about during the last year or so of her life.""

In the serialization, Brandreth wrote: ""The truth is that Her Majesty always knew that her remaining time was limited. She accepted this with all the grace you'd expect.""

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of multiple myeloma include bone pain, nausea, constipation, fatigue, and weakness or numbness in your legs.

The public was told very little about the Queen's health during her reign. In her final year on the throne, she did have to cancel several events due to her health, such as not being able to attend the State Opening of Parliament or the 2021 Festival of Remembrance.

Despite this, the monarch continued to be busy right up until her last day. Brandreth writes that her royal duties were the best distraction for the Queen after she was widowed in April 2021.

Neither the cruise operator (Cunard) nor ship owner (Carnival Corporation) would disclose the number of infected passengers or crew members. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Cunard admitted “there was an ‘elevated level of transmission’ on board, but declined to provide case numbers.”

The Sydney Morning Herald states that authorities in Indonesian requested the Queen Elizabeth to abandon the Balinese leg of its 17-day tour, following a COVID-19 outbreak on board.

“The Queen Elizabeth left Sydney on November 15, stopping at Airlie Beach, Cairns, Port Douglas and Darwin, but will cut short the final week of its tour and head straight to Fremantle.”

ABC News in Australia reports that the “WA (West Australia) government said it had received information that 10 to 15 percent of the people on board are COVID-positive.”

With nearly 2,100 passengers and a crew of around 1,000, that means that between 310 and 465 people on the Cunard ship were positive for COVID-19.

The Australian newspaper added that the “abandonment of the ship’s Bali tour follows the berthing of the Majestic Princess in Sydney earlier this month, carrying 800 COVID-positive passengers and crew.”

There has been a trend of cruise ships calling on Australian ports in the last month with a significant number of passengers and crew members positive for COVID-19:

Majestic Princess – 800 infected guests (Sydney);

Quantum of the Seas – 400 infected guests (heading toward Queensland)

Coral Princess – 290 infected guests and crew (Fremantle);

Grand Princess – 200 infected guests (Melbourne);

Ovation of the Seas – 129 infected guests and 2 crew member (New Zealand)

Majestic Princess – 116 infected guests (Tahiti).
