“Life on the road can sometimes be lonely, but having a pet along for the ride provides companionship and a partner that can help ease those feelings and support a more pleasant and enjoyable driving experience,” Greg Orr, president of CFI, said in the release.

The furry friends can cheer up owners and make drivers’ homes seem a little less farther away, providing fulfillment and calming.

For Davisson, bringing one’s pet on the road requires a little more planning, such as for rest stops, but it doesn’t slow her down, she said.

Insurance providers advise drivers to avoid distractions while riding with pets. And at least one state, Hawaii, notes restrictions with pets in transit, stipulating that animals shouldn’t interfere with driving.

Other states such as California and Connecticut considered restrictions for animals on laps, which led to attention-grabbing headlines, but bills failed to materialize. Another bill in Maine was also unsuccessful, which called for preventing a dog from sticking its head out the window.

There’s not just tail-wagging on these rides for CFI. Other drivers’ pets have included a cat and snake, Davisson said.

“It’s great having her with me,” Davisson said of her dog. “She’s there for me when I’m having a bad day. She’s there when I need a cuddle. I talk to her, and she talks back to me.”

According to Kodiak, its autonomous system can immediately detect the tire fault, initiate a fallback protocol, trigger hazard lights to turn on and bring the truck to a stop within the lane. Another video showed the truck hitting the spike and coming to a stop, showing the length of the process and deviation from the centerline.

While the AV startup can’t control the hazards its trucks will face on the open road, it can control how trucks behave in critical situations, Kodiak co-founder and CEO Don Burnette said in a statement.

Kodiak isn’t the only company reaching new milestones in autonomous trucking technology.

In July, Aurora reported that its technology could safely pull over on a public road at highway speeds without any human involvement detecting system issues, such as for damaged sensors.

“Any of a number of factors, from blown tires to damaged sensors, can compromise a vehicle while on the road,” Sterling Anderson, Aurora co-founder and chief product officer, said in a news release. “Our Fault Management System lays the groundwork for safe autonomous operations without vehicle operators, chase vehicles, or remote human fallback systems.”

The regional carrier has about 1,300 tractors, 27 LTL service centers and 16 warehouses across the Northeast. It provides asset and non-asset-based freight services including LTL, dedicated, warehousing and distribution and brokerage services.

Pyle’s service territory growth comes at a challenging time for the LTL segment, with many seeing volumes slow. FedEx Freight and XPO Logistics are furloughing workers, and many others are seeking cost savings.

Old Dominion Freight Line plans to continue its multi-year network expansion plans despite lower demand. Yellow will sell 28 excess terminals as part of its One Yellow network transformation into a super regional LTL carrier. Saia expects to open another 10 to 15 new terminals next year, but it could delay those plans if the economy worsens.

Eagle-eyed users spotted the change Monday night, noting that a one-sentence update had been made to Twitter's online rules: ""Effective November 23, 2022, Twitter is no longer enforcing the COVID-19 misleading information policy.”

“This policy was used to silence people across the world who questioned the media narrative surrounding the virus and treatment options,” tweeted Dr. Simone Gold, a physician and leading purveyor of COVID-19 misinformation. “A win for free speech and medical freedom!”

Twitter's decision to no longer remove false claims about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines disappointed public health officials, however, who said it could lead to more false claims about the virus, or the safety and effectiveness of vaccines.

“Bad news,” tweeted epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding, who urged people not to flee Twitter but to keep up the fight against bad information about the virus. “Stay folks — do NOT cede the town square to them!”

While Twitter's efforts to stop false claims about COVID weren't perfect, the company's decision to reverse course is an abdication of its duty to its users, said Paul Russo, a social media researcher and dean of the Katz School of Science and Health at Yeshiva University in New York.

Russo added that it's the latest of several recent moves by Twitter that could ultimately scare away some users and even advertisers. Some big names in business have already paused their ads on Twitter over questions about its direction under Musk.

“It is 100% the responsibility of the platform to protect its users from harmful content,” Russo said. “This is absolutely unacceptable.”

The virus, meanwhile, continues to spread. Nationally, new COVID cases averaged nearly 38,800 a day as of Monday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University — far lower than last winter but a vast undercount because of reduced testing and reporting. What an Inverted Yield Curve Means for Investors

One of the more significant talking points among market analysts in 2022 has been the status of the yield curve. The yield curve is a visual representation of the relationship between bond yields and the maturity length of different bonds. The two most often referenced bonds in terms of the yield curve are the 2-year treasury bond and the 10-year treasury bond.

The significance of the yield curve has to do with the value of a dollar today versus the value of that same dollar at a point in the future. Investors would expect to receive a higher yield for holding a bond for 10 years than they would when holding a bond for two years. This is considered a normal yield curve.

An inverted yield curve happens when the yield of a shorter-term bond climbs higher than that of a longer-term bond. This is important for an investor that relies on a fixed income to any extent. And even though the standard 60/40 portfolio is no longer a sure-fire template for investing success, chances are many investors have some exposure to bonds.

In this article, we’ll look at the relationship between interest rates and some trading strategies using the yield curve.

What Causes a Yield Curve to Invert?

The yield curve is tied to interest rates. Specifically, as interest rates rise, bond yields fall. The opposite is also true; when interest rates decline, bond yields rise.

The yield curve is a visual representation of this relationship. When the inverted curve starts to flatten, and particularly when it becomes inverted, it suggests the economy is slowing. However, to understand how this should inform your investing strategy requires understanding what rising interest rates mean to the economy. And for that, you must look at the banks.

When the economy is expanding, banks use short-term borrowing (from depositors or bank-to-bank lending) to fund the loans they make (business, home loans, etc.). When long-term interest rates are higher than short-term rates, it is seen as a sign that lending is profitable. It also implies that access to credit is plentiful.

The opposite is also correct, when credit markets tighten, banks become less likely to lend, which is typically when long-term rates go down and the yield curve starts to flatten. This is one reason why investors see a flattening or inverted curve as a signal that the economy is entering a recession. "e for its third straight drop. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 23 points, or 0.1%, to 33,824, and the Nasdaq slid 0.6%.

Small-company stocks were mostly higher. The Russell 2000 rose 0.3%.

Technology stocks were the biggest drag on the broader market. Apple fell 2.4%.

Financial and industrial stocks also rose. American Express added 2% and United Parcel Service rose 2.5%.

Energy stocks rose as U.S. crude oil prices climbed 1.2%. Hess rose 2%.

Bond yields gained ground. The yield on the 10-year Treasury, which influences mortgage rates, rose to 3.75% from 3.68% late Monday.

Markets in Europe were mixed and markets in Asia rose broadly.

Hong Kong's benchmark index jumped 5.2% as protests in China seemingly calmed down amid a heightened police presence in major cities and the government eases some of its lockdown restrictions.

China's “zero-COVID” policy includes strict lockdown procedures that have crimped the nation's economy and threaten global supply chains. That has added to broader concerns globally about stubbornly hot inflation and the potential for recessions to hit economies worldwide.

Wall Street's big focus remains the Federal Reserve's fight against the hottest inflation in decades. The central bank has been aggressively raising interest rates to make borrowing more difficult and tame high prices. The Fed's benchmark rate currently stands at 3.75% to 4%, up from close to zero in March.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell will speak at the Brookings Institution about the outlook for the U.S. economy and the labor market on Wednesday. Investors have been hoping that the Fed could ease up on its rate increases and are closely watching the latest data on inflation, consumer spending and the employment market.

The Conference Board reported on Tuesday that consumer confidence fell slightly in November from October, but remains relatively strong. Consumer spending has been solid area of the economy, along with employment.

The U.S. government will be releasing several reports about the labor market this week. A report about job openings and labor turnover for October will be released Wednesday, followed by a weekly unemployment claims report Thursday. The closely watched monthly report on the job market will be released on Friday.
