Thousands take to streets of U.S. in celebration of Biden victory

WASHINGTON/PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Days of pent-up post-election anxiety gave way to spontaneous street celebrations as Joe Biden supporters on Saturday cheered news of his presidential win with a cacophony of banging pots and pans, honking horns and dance music in cities across the United States.

Rallies by hundreds of supporters of Republican President Donald Trump, who insisted on Saturday "this election is far from over," were more muted in size and scope compared with the festive crowds that turned out by the thousands in some cities for Biden.

While there were some isolated confrontations between Trump and Biden supporters, as occurred between two opposing groups of about 100 each in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, there were no immediate reports of violence or other unruly behavior.

After a nerve-wracking four-day wait for results after polls closed on Tuesday, the reaction to news that Pennsylvania and its 20 Electoral College votes had carried Biden over the line was almost instantaneous.

Minutes after major television networks called the race in the former vice president's favor, throngs of people - most wearing masks to curb the spread of COVID-19 - streamed to the White House to rejoice outside a security fence as the sound of fireworks boomed in the distance.

"I was on the bus and I jumped off the bus to come right down here to the White House," Washington resident Donna Thomas said. "It is something to celebrate. We have been waiting so long."

Duane Fitzhugh, 52, a teacher celebrating outside the Trump International Hotel, on Pennsylvania Avenue blocks from the White House, compared the moment to the lifting of an evil spell.

"It's like a pall fell over the country four years ago, and we've been waiting years for it to end," he said.

Chants of "USA" and "This is what democracy looks like" broke out as one woman popped a bottle of champagne and sprayed it over the crowd.

In New York City, revelers poured out of their homes to celebrate outside on a remarkably mild November day. A huge crowd gathered in Times Square, while in some other neighborhoods cars honked their horns as pedestrians lining the sidewalks cheered and applauded.

New Yorkers also cheered Biden's victory at Grand Army Plaza, Columbus Circle, Washington Square Park and near Brooklyn's Fort Greene Park.

Cities erupt in celebration after Biden named winner

President-elect Joe Biden’s victory over President Donald Trump sparked celebrations in cities across the country, including many of the places that swept Biden into the White House.

From New York to Miami in the East and Denver and Austin out West, Biden supporters flooded into the streets after CNN and other news organizations projected Biden as the winner Saturday morning, honking horns, cheering, dancing and popping champagne.

In Washington, DC, a crowd packed into the streets in front of the White House at Black Lives Matter Plaza, within seconds of the race being called. The streets nearby filled with people shouting, banging pots and pans, and singing, “Nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey, goodbye.”

The celebratory crowd in the blocks around the White House created a traffic jam, with people sitting on top of cars and drivers holding their fists out the window. One person wearing an American flag as a cape walked toward Black Lives Matter Plaza with a hand-written posterboard that read, “The nightmare is over.”

The packed crowd outside the White House later sung “YMCA,” the song Trump used to close out his rallies down the homestretch of the campaign.

Trump, however, was not at the White House on Saturday morning – he was at his golfing at his club in Virginia when CNN and other networks called the race.

Jonathan Chait Recalls the Ecstasy of Joe Biden's Election

We prefer to remember the night Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump. Clinton supporters were literally on the floor of the Javits Center sobbing … some even said they ran to the restrooms to vomit. There were some great photos taken that night.

Jonathan Chait prefers to remember the "ecstasy" of Joe Biden's election, when we all danced in the streets.

I thought this had to be sarcastic, but it's not pic.twitter.com/qh3q9Qjs2X

    — Michael Tracey (@mtracey) January 17, 2024

    Chait writes:

We danced in the streets when Joe Biden was elected. Do you remember? American cities staged the greatest spontaneous outpouring of joy since V-J Day with cars honking and strangers high-fiving one another on an unusually warm November weekend. When I ventured down to Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C., on a Sunday night, a day and a half after the election had been called, the street party was still going. That was just three years ago.

Actually, we remember Antifa — which Biden insists is an "idea" — destroying Portland and carrying banners saying, “We are ungovernable” and “We don’t want Biden — We want revenge.”

But Chait is worried that people are forgetting the ecstasy, probably every time they fill their tanks or go grocery shopping.

No Labels Wants To Save America From Joe Biden (And Donald Trump)

The political group detests Trump. But its disgust with Biden is central to a potential third-party presidential campaign.

The leaders of No Labels say they’re on a mission to prevent a divisive and extreme president from winning this year’s election. They’re not just talking about Donald Trump.

No Labels officials say both political parties, Democrats and Republicans, have blitzed past the will of moderate, typical Americans — that both have proven incapable of pursuing common-sense ideas and that both have partaken in their own bouts of destruction.

For Trump and Republicans, there was Jan. 6, 2021. For Democrats, well, among other things, Sen. John Fetterman was temporarily allowed to wear sweats when walking through Congress.

“It wasn’t a Republican who said Fetterman could wear shorts from sleeping to the Senate floor,” Jay Nixon, the former Democratic governor of Missouri and a No Labels leader, told NOTUS in a recent interview, referring to the junior senator from Pennsylvania known for avoiding formal dress wear.

In the roughly two years since No Labels began an unprecedented campaign to elect a politically moderate third-party candidate to the White House, the group’s leaders have made national headlines defending their effort as a politically viable bid backed by a public fed up with both parties. Less discussed — but still central to the group’s motivation — is their dismal view of Joe Biden and the Democratic Party.

    DAVOS WEF

U.S. executives in Davos see a Trump victory in 2024, and no cause for concern

    KEY POINTS

Both publicly and privately, U.S. executives said at Davos they weren’t concerned if Donald Trump wins the 2024 presidential election.

Banking leaders, in particular, expressed confidence that America will be OK if Trump returns to the White House.

Several World Economic Forum attendees said non-American executives have privately expressed far more trepidation about a Trump 2024 victory than American leaders.

DAVOS, Switzerland — Global business leaders may be in the snowy hills of Switzerland, but their conversations keep returning to Washington, D.C.

The topic of Donald Trump has dominated dinners and parties at Davos, with many in attendance at the World Economic Forum mulling the former president’s potential return to the White House after his resounding Iowa caucus victory.

Several business executives have noted a theme in their private discussions during the summit: U.S. industry leaders seem overwhelmingly nonplussed with a second Trump term, while foreign chief executives are terrified — particularly of restrictions on immigration and potential global conflicts.

Trump Touts Endorsements From Global Dictators His most consistent belief is that authoritarian rulers know best.

Donald Trump has flitted erratically from one position to another on a variety of political beliefs, but he has hewed with remarkable consistency to one: Dictators are good. Trump has maintained this belief throughout his long public career, and he asserted it once again in a speech in New Hampshire Saturday.

In the address, Trump cited Hungarian strongman Viktor Orbán, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, and North Korean hereditary communist monarch Kim Jong-un as authorities on his own superiority. “Viktor Orbán, the highly respected prime minister of Hungary, said Trump is the man who can save the western world,” exclaimed Trump. Putin “says that Biden’s, and this is a quote, politically motivated persecution of his political rival is very good for Russia because it shows the rottenness of the American political system, which cannot pretend to teach others about democracy.” As for Kim, “He’s not so fond of this administration, but he’s fond of me.”

Trump is not merely making a Kissingerian argument that these foreign leaders maintained peaceful international relations with him as president. He is citing them specifically as experts on domestic American governance. They know how to run a society, Trump boasts, and they see in Trump a strong leader in the same mold.

Shapiro: “Then he'll be in for another term, and then he'll be done”

BEN SHAPIRO (HOST): So with Donald Trump as the presumptive 2024 nominee and Joe Biden ailing and Kamala Harris being the backup -- woo is that a stinker of a decision by Joe Biden -- the panic has set in on the Democratic side of the aisle. Like, full-scale panic. And this, by the way, is also an ally of Trump. Because the more you keep telling us that Trump is Mussolini, that he's Hitler, that the world's gonna end if he's elected president, the more everybody looks at you like you're crazy because you are. Here is the thing -- no matter what you think of Donald Trump, the notion that Donald Trump is in the same league as Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini is an absurdity. He was already president once. And you know what happened? Some tax cuts, some Supreme Court appointments, pretty good foreign policy, a good economy, some bad governance during COVID, and then he said a bunch of dumb stuff between November 4th and January 6th and a few hundred people walked into the Capitol building, some of whom were rioting, some of whom just walked in. And then within three hours, they were cleared, and then he wasn't president anymore. That's the story. Does that sound like Mussolini or Hitler to you? Was it the March on Rome? Was it Hitler's Reichstag fire? Like, what exactly -- where is the comp? I need the comp in order to really understand the claim that you are making.

    How Not to Save Democracy

    Nicolas Guilhot

Last spring, the Democratic congressman Jamie Raskin, a member of the January 6 Committee, was spotted with a copy of Sallust’s Bellum Catilinae. It was the new Princeton edition, translated by Josiah Osgood, which comes with a new title, How to Stop a Conspiracy: An Ancient Guide to Saving a Republic. ‘I’m getting ideas from wherever I can,’ Raskin said.

According to Sallust’s account, Lucius Sergius Catilina was a morally corrupt yet charismatic figure who refused to concede defeat at the ballot box. A member of the Roman oligarchy burdened with debt, he surrounded himself with a crew of louche characters; he fomented riots and assembled an armed mob to march on the Capitol and burn the Senate. The coup was thwarted in extremis but the republic was in danger.

Will the January 6 Committee’s report help save the American republic? In 63 BC the Roman senators took exceptional measures to ensure their enemies were politically (and militarily) defeated. Today, their counterparts seem less interested in political victory than in taking the (ostensibly) neutral stance of a historian. Their model isn’t even Cicero – who as consul led the efforts to suppress the Catiline conspiracy – so much as Sallust.

Sallust claimed to write with ‘a mind free of political partisanship’. The chairman of the select committee, the Democratic congressman Bennie Thompson, has repeatedly said that the investigation ‘is not about politics. It’s not about party. It’s about the facts, plain and simple.’ The committee’s Republican vice-chair, Liz Cheney, warned her audience not to be ‘distracted by politics’.
