Summary: OpenAI dropped Sora 2 this week and honestly, the timing is a bit awkward. Just last week Sam Altman was out here talking about needing trillions of dollars and massive compute power to cure cancer and provide personalised tutors for every human on earth. Noble stuff. Then days later they launch what's essentially a very sophisticated AI video slop machine with Sam's face plastered everywhere as the default deep fake. I get why they're doing it, they need revenue, they need to prove the business model to investors, and the the TikTok killer is genuinely clever, but the optics are problematic.
But, the bit that's worrying: if you delete your Sora account, OpenAI nukes your entire ChatGPT account, all your conversations, and your API access. Forever. You can't even reuse your email. It's buried in the terms and I didn't clock it when signing up, did you?
They've also just closed a deal allowing employees to sell shares at a $500 billion valuation, so there's clearly a lot of money moving around behind the scenes. Meanwhile, internal researchers are publicly uncomfortable about launching a social media feed, and honestly, fair enough.
Oh and we've also just crossed the uncanny valley—AI video is now indistinguishable from reality for most people, and society hasn't quite cottoned on to what that means yet.

Summary: Sora 2, OpenAI’s new video app that looks suspiciously like TikTok with prompts. At first I was ready to dismiss it as another AI slop generator, but it’s actually far more interesting once you start putting yourself and your mates into the videos. It suddenly feels social, almost like memes and inside jokes on steroids. That, more than the shiny visuals, might be the bit that sticks.
Elsewhere, an “AI actress” is making headlines for all the wrong reasons, though I suspect it’s more PR stunt than genuine outrage.
And Claude 4.5 quietly dropped a new update with a builder’s challenge.

Summary: Claude dropped Sonnet 4.5, which is now officially the best coding model on the planet—Anthropic aren't being shy about that claim either. The benchmarks are genuinely impressive, and I've had a proper go with it. What I appreciate most is that it doesn't suffer fools. Unlike some models that'll agree with your terrible ideas just to be agreeable, Sonnet 4.5 will actually tell you when you're being thick. It's discerning, intelligent about its criticism, and frankly that's the kind of AI I want to work with. Though I suspect people who prefer the more sycophantic models will absolutely hate it.
The other big news came from Lovable, who've essentially eliminated the two biggest barriers to no-code development. They've built backend infrastructure natively into the platform—no more mucking about with Supabase accounts and API keys—and they've integrated AI capabilities directly as well. This is massive for anyone who bounced off vibe coding before because of the technical friction.
Between the new Sonnet model and Lovable's updates, if you've been putting off trying to build something, now's genuinely the time. Oh, and OpenAI threw their hat in the ring too with shopping integration via Stripe, because they couldn't bear to be out of the news cycle.

Summary: This morning’s update was a bit of a mixed bag — OpenAI have quietly been caught switching people mid-chat from GPT-4.0 to GPT-5 whenever things get too emotional. The kicker? The model selector still shows 4.0, which made users feel like they were being gaslit. It’s now confirmed there’s a “safety routing” system at play, and the whole thing has left a subset of die-hard 4.0 fans fuming, while the other 699 million ChatGPT users probably haven’t even noticed. It’s a small drama, but one that neatly sums up OpenAI’s slightly slippery comms style.
Then it was onto the big layoff news: Accenture cutting 11,000 jobs in the name of “AI restructuring.” On the face of it, that’s a lot of livelihoods gone, but in context it’s 0.14% of their enormous workforce, and possibly more about trimming fat than AI’s march.
Apple also gets a mention, dusting off Siri with plans for a large language model refresh, reportedly arriving next year under the code name Veritas. Classic Apple: late to the party, but with the potential to swoop in and polish the rough edges once the rest have done the awkward experimenting.

Summary: OpenAI’s new attempt at measuring AI progress, and it’s a clever twist. Instead of the usual exams and coding puzzles, they’re now judging models on “economically valuable tasks” – proper jobs like drafting a legal brief, planning patient care, or even sorting out property paperwork. It’s called GDP-Val, which is a dreadful name, but the idea makes sense: stop training AIs to ace abstract tests and see how they fare in the work people actually get paid to do. It’s more grounded, a bit more unnerving, and definitely more useful if we’re talking about AI reshaping industries rather than just academic leaderboards.
Alongside that, I had a look at Pulse – OpenAI’s new “proactive” mode inside ChatGPT. Think of it as a digital butler nudging you first thing in the morning with a personalised news brief, a bit like Duolingo’s owl but less passive aggressive. It’s rolling out to the pricey plans first, and yes, it comes with all the privacy trade-offs you’d expect, but the functionality is, useful? Finally, I touched on Google’s DORA report showing that 90% of developers now use AI in their coding workflows. That number has crept up fast – whether you buy the hype or not, 90% is significant.

Summary: OpenAI's apparently on the hunt for an advertising chief, which feels inevitable really. With 700 million weekly users and mounting compute costs, they've got to monetize the freeloaders somehow. Likely, ads are coming to the free tier. Probably sponsored recommendations when you're searching for speakers or whatever. It's the same Faustian bargain we've already made with Google and Meta, just wrapped in a chatbot. They'll need to be careful though. Yahoo got greedy with sneaky paid listings and lost everything to Google. Trust erodes quickly.
Meanwhile, there's this bonkers app called Neon sitting at number two in the US App Store that literally pays you 30 cents per minute to record your phone calls and flog the data to AI companies. Proper dystopian stuff, except everyone's doing it willingly for pocket change. And whilst we're all distracted by that circus, China's Qwen models just quietly dropped six new releases including Qwen 3 Max, which is currently sitting third on the global leaderboards, right behind GPT-5 and Claude Opus. They're open source, free to use, and most people haven't even heard of them.
Finally, we've become so entitled to AI progress that even foundation models acing the hardest financial exams barely makes headlines anymore.

Summary: Nvidia investing $100 billion into OpenAI, which then promptly spends it on Nvidia chips. It's circular economics at its finest, and frankly, it makes me a bit queasy. Not because the money's flowing, but because we're essentially putting all our eggs in Sam Altman's basket. His latest blog post about "abundant intelligence" reads like a masterclass in stakeholder management - hitting every note from "fundamental human right" to "American supremacy" to "trust us with more billions, please."
Whilst we're throwing money at AI infrastructure, Harvard Business Review coined the term "work slop" to describe the very real problem of people using AI to generate impressive-looking nonsense that actually creates more work for everyone else. It's the productivity equivalent of junk food, looks substantial, tastes like cardboard.
Finally, the UK managed to claw back £500 million from fraudsters using what appears to be a fairly straightforward GPT-4 tool, proving that sometimes the most effective AI applications are refreshingly mundane.

Summary: Another day in AI land and the money's moving in very peculiar circles. Nvidia's dropping $100 billion into OpenAI, who'll promptly spend it right back on Nvidia chips. Meanwhile, Sam Altman's playing chess while everyone else plays checkers, pivoting to luxury pricing just as Grok tries to race everyone to the bottom. Smart move really - when your competitor goes commodity, you go premium.
Meta's adding AI assistants to Facebook Dating whilst a quarter of young adults are apparently getting their romantic needs met by chatbots. It's simultaneously fascinating and slightly concerning. We're optimising for engagement, not actual human connection. But that's the world we're building, isn't it? Everything's getting intermediated by algorithms, from finding love to moving billions around tech companies. Just another Tuesday in the attention economy.

Matthew McConaughey story might be my favourite thing this week. The man goes on Joe Rogan talking about wanting his own private AI trained exclusively on his books and journals, and within hours the entire AI Twitter is basically sliding into his DMs with increasingly unhinged technical solutions. Someone literally suggested he "install LM Studio, download a 7-8B GGUF model, enable GPU offload" - mate, it's Matthew McConaughey, not a software engineer. Though to be fair, you could probably do this with Google's NotebookLM or something like Delphi without needing a computer science degree.
Elon's dropped Grok 4 Fast at absolutely ridiculous pricing - we're talking 15 times cheaper than the previous Grok model and significantly undercutting ChatGPT. It's clearly a play to force everyone else's hand on pricing, though whether xAI can actually afford to run at these margins is anyone's guess. The cherry on top is that the model got immediately jailbroken by Pliny the Liberator (yes, that's their actual handle) using just their name as a prompt. Apparently Pliny has poisoned so much training data that typing "!Pliny" instantly removes all guardrails. It's both brilliant and slightly terrifying.

Summary: Mark Zuckerberg's rather spectacular demo disaster at Meta Connect. Watching a billionaire's cutting-edge AI glasses repeatedly tell someone to "shave some pear" whilst they're trying to make Korean sauce was genuinely painful, like watching Siri have an existential crisis on stage. That said, I'm actually more bullish on the tech than most people seem to be. Yes, it crapped out spectacularly, but the underlying concept of neural wristbands that can detect hand movements for text input is pure sci-fi becoming reality. We're just early, and these things always look ridiculous until they don't.
