We talk about the purpose and function of the Telomere; "an essential part of human cells that affect how our cells age. Telomeres are the caps at the end of each strand of DNA that protect our chromosomes, like the plastic tips at the end of shoelaces. Ed Carmody's Biography:
Ed, grew up in California and served 30 years in the US Air Force, retiring in 2010. During his time in the AF he worked as an Intermediate Avionics Technician on F-15s at Langley AFB, VA for about 6 years. He then taught technical training school at Lowry AFB, CO for 6 years and then served as an Air Force Recruiter, also in CO.

After recruiting he returned to the Avionics career field at Mountain Home AFB, ID until being mandated to retrain. With 17 years in service, he retrained to be Loadmaster on C-141s and C-17s at McChord AFB. Ed's last assignment was at Travis AFB where he helped set up the newest C-17 squadron. Over the course of his AF career he was promoted to the highest enlisted rank – Chief Master Sergeant, a rank only 1% of the AF achieves.

After retiring from the USAF, Ed was hired to work for a DoD contractor and moved to Las Vegas, NV where he has resided for the last 9 years.

Presently, Ed and his wife are building a Health and Wellness business which they were introduced to approximately 3 years ago.

The focus of their Health and Wellness business is focused on overall health. Ed and his wife help people using natural products to achieve better health through better nutrition, weight management, and blood sugar regulation.

Ed and his wife have 4 children; Daughter (36), Daughter (28), Son (26), and Daughter (21).

Today my guest is Rocky Goins. He has rich development and construction experience ranging from commercial/retail, mix-use and senior living development. After serving his country as a Naval Officer in the Civil Engineer Corps/Seabees, Rocky developed multiple grocery store (Publix, Winn-Dixie and Kash-n-Karry) retail centers. With the Rouse company, Rocky enjoyed master-planning town centers, retail construction, and was the senior project manager for the Faneuil Hall Marketplace (Boston) renovation.

Rocky entered the Senior Living Industry in 2002, and advanced rapidly at Sunrise Senior Living until the recession stopped their entire development efforts. During the recession, Rocky worked with two major non-for-profit CCRC's with their development plans until he settled his family in Tulsa, OK with Senior Star/HCN to lead their expansion/renovation efforts.

Dr. Mills came to the ADDF from the University of Michigan, where she served as the grant writing manager for a clinical laboratory specializing in neuroautoimmune diseases. She also completed a Postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan, where she worked to uncover genes that could promote retina regeneration. She earned her doctorate in neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she studied the role of glial cells in the optic nerve, and their contribution to neurodegeneration in glaucoma. She obtained her bachelor's degree in biology from the College of the Holy Cross. Dr. Mills has a strong passion for community outreach, and has served as program presenter with the Michigan Great Lakes Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association to promote dementia awareness.

The COVID-19 pandemic is exposing our healthcare system and our industry to be very fragmented. So what have you seen in the evolution of senior living over the last 30 years? Are the nursing homes shaped solely by government reimbursement? Is that adequate in providing the quality of care for someone with the acuity profile?

Today, nursing and rehabilitation facilities are funded through four sources. Medicare, Medicaid, Quality Assurance Assessment Program and Patient Pay. Medicare Part A is skilled nursing facility care. It's provided to recipients in need of skilled healthcare services that are rehabilitative or restorative. In the current regulatory system, is it more reactive and is it servicing the flaws in the midst of the current situation?

He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Illinois Institute of Technology where he received the 2008 Alumni Professional Achievement Award. He is licensed as an Architect in 26 states and a member of the College of Fellows, American Institute of Architects. He is co-author of the books “Design for Aging Post Occupancy Evaluations” and “Design for Aging, International Case Studies of Building and Program,” and contributing author for the books “Managing the Long-Term Care Facility” and “In Pursuit of the Sunbeam.”

Jeffrey has written numerous articles on environments for the elderly and is a frequent speaker at professional organizations, both nationally and internationally, on environments for the aging and their relationship to quality of life. He served as 2005 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Design for Aging Review Jury Chair, 2006 Chair for the AIA Design for Aging Knowledge Community, 2007, 2009 and 2011 Jury Chair for the International Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing Design Symposium, and juror for the Design for Future Aging, Student Competition, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea in 2006 and 2007.
