The creative journey can feel like two sides of a coin at the same time. On one hand we are in control and flying high, at the same time we’re confused, frustrated, and unable to find a way to make the two sides match.

In the song “Why I Am” from the album ‘Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux King’, Dave Matthews Band sums up the duality of creativity beautifully. Especially in the line ‘Till I was slave and master at the same damn time.’.

I read an interesting article a while back that essentially said if you want to keep your art meaningful you, in essence, have to avoid “making it” as an artist. My first thought was to rally against this notion, but after further thought the point may have merit.

How many times do you feel completely stuck with your creative pursuits? The problem is that you are likely too narrowly focused with your creativity and are simply “over training”.
----more----
I believe that every one of us is creative. As such, to grow as a creative we have to treat our creativity like a muscle. Maya Angelou once said, “You can't use up creativity, the more you use, the more you have.”. This is ultimately true in my experience. BUT that doesn’t mean that our creativity comes in just one form.
If you think of creativity as being similar to a muscle, the more you use it the stronger it gets. But if you only train one muscle, the rest of your body gets out of whack. That’s why it’s important to practice many different types of creativity, or creativity cross training. Don’t believe me, give a listen to the episode and we’ll talk some more after!

As we are chasing our dreams, it’s important to remember the importance of celebrating the small victories.
----more----
Small victories are those things that we often just brush right past because they aren’t a “big deal”. But it’s very important to be present enough to recognize the fact that we DID accomplish something, no matter how big or small it may seem.
I’ve come up with a challenge of sorts for you, we’re calling it “Zoink’s Challenge” as a throwback to the previous episode.
The idea is simple:
At the end of the year you’ll have a book full of FIFTY TWO goals that you smashed in the last year! Talk about motivation to keep going!

Goals, some people love them, other people hate them. But I think there is a different way to think about them that will make a TON more sense for you. Want a clue? Think bite sized, think action, oh yeah and think spring boards. Give a listen but be warned, things get a little nerdy!
