In episode 13, we chat with Jana's supervisor, Prof. Louise du Toit about her current research on Mahatma Gandhi and non-violent protests in South Africa today. You can look forward to discussions about Gandhi's spiritual ontology, a deep dive into aggressive non-violence, and how we can rethink self-care and discipline within our current political landscape. More about our guest:  Louise du Toit is Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Her main research interests include a wide range of themes within feminist philosophy, especially in the European and African traditions. She is interested in sexual violence, Critical Theory, political philosophy, hermeneutics, philosophy and literature, phenomenology, legal philosophy, environmental philosophy and feminist philosophy of religion. She is the author of A Philosophical Investigation of Rape: the making and unmaking of the feminine self (Routledge, 2009) and is currently working on a second monograph with the title Sexual Violence and Political Transition. She was also guest editor of ‘Rape and Its Meaning/s’, a special edition of Philosophical Papers, November 2009. She is on the editorial board of Indo-Pacific Journal of Phenomenology, De Uil van Minerva and of Gender Questions. She is currently involved in several international research collaborations with themes including ”Towards a Political Ontology of Violence: reality, image and perception’ (Leiden University), ‘Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict’ (Hamburg Institute for Social Research), ‘Boundaries and Legal Authority in a Global Context’ (Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study), and ‘African Philosophy and Literature’ (Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program).

Two artists meet on social media and come together to investigate and unpick their Afrikaner culture on the topic of getting married. In this episode, Jana asks Nicolene Burger (Air It co-host) and Mandri Sutherland questions about their multidisciplinary performance, “Lilith & Lesbet Trou”. About our guest: Mandri Sutherland is an actress, voice- and performance artist living in Cape Town. She received her BA (Drama) degree from Stellenbosch University in 2015.

Mandri believes in tapping into the rhythm of everyday life and from these somewhat mundane events, she draws inspiration and joy for her own performances. Her performances could be seen as explorations of personal projections, struggles, and discoveries.

Inspired by a private performance Nicolene will be doing with Mandri Sutherland in mid-June, Jana and Nicolene finally decided to tackle a topic that is very personal and controversial in their communities: getting married! They have both attended many (Afrikaner) White weddings and decided to reflect in this episode about the rituals, value, consumerism, and expectation connected to tying the knot in their culture. This “gezellige” conversation with Georgie Visser, which took place in Fish Hoek on Moroccan scatter pillows (with tea and chocolate chip cookies), aims to inspire you to relate consciously to the spaces and objects around you. We touch on the Danish concept of Hygge, The Art of Happiness by Alain de Botton, and how humans tend to desire objects that reflect what we lack. We share many personal stories about the memories, meanings, and morals inscribed in the items we place in our homes. More about our guest: Georgie is a brand strategist, philosophy enthusiast, and design lover (and amazing singer). Jana and Nicolene met Georgie in the Visual Studies lecture hall at Stellenbosch where they quickly started musing over similar interests. Georgie’s personal space and the social spaces she creates speak to her spatial sensibility and design/ curation soft skills. From this love and fascination with what our surroundings and the objects we value communicate to others, she is now pursuing a Masters in contextual design. Hear her speak about why we are drawn to certain design elements, what designing for the senses entails, as well as the significance of conscious design.

In our first minisode and New Year's bonus we look at a collaborative art piece by Die Antwoord and Roger Ballen. Deranged, utterly strange and “universally offensive” is but a few ways that this dark and freeky music video can be described. But viewing it as a zef subversion of conservative Afrikaans culture, scratched open many more questions about race, artistic motive and appropriation.
