The Great Tide was the worst peace-time natural disaster in British history, devastated the East Coast of England, particularly Essex. More than 300 people died, more than a third of those in Essex. The floods also devastated the low-lying Netherlands and Belgium with the loss of many hundreds more lives.

This documentary was broadcast on BBC Essex in 2003 - an updated version using interviews recorded in 1992. Producer: Anton Jarvis, Interviewers Anton Jarvis & Ray Clark.

At the age of 10, Otto was one of many Jewish children evacuated from Europe to the UK to avoid the holocaust. He movingly explains his separation from his parents and sister, and what happened to them. Otto died in 2017 at the age of 88. He made his life in Southend, Essex.
