The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. is teaming up with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for the annual Santa Claus Express holiday toy drive on December 1-3 from 2-7 p.m. at the Wingfoot Lake blimp hangar in Mogadore. The free drive-through event encourages community members to donate new, unwrapped toys to benefit the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots program. While remaining in their vehicles, participants can enjoy up-close views of the Goodyear airship, festive decorations, and Santa. This marks the 13th year of the collaboration between Goodyear and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for this charitable initiative.

Sheetz is dropping the price of gas for Thanksgiving week.

The Altoona, Pennsylvania-based gas station and convenience store chain, announced it is reducing the price of Unleaded 88 to $1.99 at all locations that carry it in Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

The promotion is happening now and will last until 11:59 p.m. Nov. 27.

Unleaded 88 is a blend of 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline.

The dates for this year's run will be Nov. 24-26, 30 and Dec. 1-3, 7-23 and 26-30. The hours are 3 to 8 p.m.

The home of former Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company founder F.A. Seiberling on North Portage Path is decked out from the gardens to the master bedroom with some 1.2 million lights.

Christmas has always been a special time at the estate.

The Seiberling family moved in at Christmastime in 1915 and held grand holiday parties and gatherings through the years and this tradition continues with the public tours.

Akron City Council this week unanimously passed nine pieces of legislation relating to the city's adoption of a new zoning code for Merriman Valley and the city as a whole.

The ordinances are part of the master plan adopted by Akron and Cuyahoga Falls that transforms the Merriman Valley-Schumacher Area into a walkable, environmentally friendly corridor to the Cuyahoga Valley National Parks.

The group Preserve the Valley, which opposed the city's plan to develop Theiss Woods, partnered with Akron and Cuyahoga Falls to craft the master plan for the Merriman Valley-Schumacher Area.

Akron's new code aims to protect the surrounding environment through the use of two types of conservation districts.

The first type, Open Space Conservation Districts, will remain largely undeveloped with restrictions on what kind of buildings can be added to the site and a stipulation that only native vegetation and landscape can be utilized. Trails and associated amenities like boardwalks, for example, are allowed, provided they don't interfere with sensitive habitats.

The second type, Conservation Neighborhoods, requires the preservation of 70% of the green space in the area and a maximum of 12 dwellings per acre.

The code defines these neighborhoods as walkable with a diverse range of housing options, including single-unit detached homes, duplexes, and townhomes that are nearby to permanently protected open space. The areas feature interconnected sidewalks and pedestrian and bicycle trails through the open space to nearby streets or trails.

Akron City Council's unanimous Oct. 16 vote adopting a resolution condemning the deadly Oct. 7 attack by Hamas militants in Israel has led activists to pack into council chambers for weeks, demanding a resolution addressing the devastating effect Israel's retaliation has had on civilians in Gaza.

During the council's Rules Committee meeting Monday, Ward 4 Councilman Russ Neal and Ward 5 Councilwoman Tara Mosley introduced a resolution — crafted with the help of Jewish and Palestinian community members — "Expressing sympathy for the innocent civilians victimized by the war in Israel and Palestine" and "condemning violence of any kind."

Giant Eagle is set to merge its fuelperks+ program with the existing myPerks program starting January 25. The move comes in response to customer feedback and aims to streamline loyalty benefits. The combined program will offer rewards like free gas, up to 20% off groceries, and the option of dollar rewards. Customers will experience a seamless transition, with unused perks automatically converted into myPerks. The enhanced program aims to deliver optimal savings to customers across Giant Eagle's over 410 locations in five states.

A recent NerdWallet survey indicates that 50% of Americans plan to spend money on flights or hotel stays during the upcoming holiday season, reflecting an increase from 44% the previous year. The survey suggests that the Sunday after Thanksgiving is likely to be the busiest travel day. While 40% of Americans plan to travel for the December holidays, 29% plan to travel for Thanksgiving, and 19% for New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. The timing of Thanksgiving, with consistent travel patterns on the Wednesday before and Sunday after, contributes to its higher travel activity compared to the December holidays. Additionally, the survey found that 39% of Americans do not plan to spend money on holiday travel, with reasons including local family and financial constraints.

A 16-year-old boy, accompanied by another teenager, attempted to purchase vape products at the Valley Smoke Shop in Akron. When the clerk refused the transaction due to their apparent underage status, one of the suspects vaulted over the counter, assaulted the clerk with multiple punches to the face, and stole several vape products before fleeing the scene. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the store located in the 1600 block of Merriman Rd.

Following the robbery at the Valley Smoke Shop in Akron, the clerk, who suffered injuries to his face, was treated by EMS. The 16-year-old suspect was apprehended after officers located his vehicle on Kenmore Blvd. The teenager is charged with robbery and has been transported to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center. Akron police are actively searching for the second suspect involved in the incident and encourage anyone with information to contact the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490 or 330-375-2Tip.

Summit County's Delinquent Property Tax Assistance Program, a partnership between Community Action Akron Summit, Summit County Fiscal Office, Ohio, and Mustard Seed Development Center, helps eligible homeowners regain control of their property taxes, avoid foreclosure, and get back on track.

At least 22 kids across 14 states, including Ohio, have gotten sick from lead after consuming now-recalled fruit applesauce pouches.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recalled several brands of apple cinnamon pouches due to high lead levels.

The recall includes packets of the WanaBana brand, Schnuck brand and Weis brand applesauce. The pouches were sold both in-store and online.

Those who believe their kid may have consumed the recalled products should "contact their child’s healthcare provider about getting a blood test," the CDC advised.

Martin Wheel, a division of Kenda Tire, has initiated the construction of its manufacturing plant, warehouse, and office space on International Drive in Brimfield, situated within the Joint Economic Development District with Tallmadge.

Anticipating completion by the end of 2024, the project received a 60%, 10-year tax abatement from the county in 2021. The expansion aims to sustain 101 jobs and generate at least 24 new positions, maintaining an annual payroll of $5.6 million.

Your Water Bill is Going up in 2024

The city of Akron has announced a restructuring of its water rates in 2024, increasing from $2.73 to $3.06 per HCF (hundred cubic feet). Residential customers will also incur a fixed infrastructure charge of $9, leading to an overall monthly utility bill increase of $10-$12 for most Akron residents. The changes aim to fund necessary projects for Akron's aging drinking water infrastructure, addressing repairs and replacements of essential components over 100 years old. The revenue generated, estimated at $15 million, will support projects like Brittain Road Reservoir replacement, water main replacements, lead service line replacement, and updates to the Filter Building Treatment Facility. The city is also launching a water affordability program, offering eligible residents a 40 percent discount on the water portion of their bill, with applications opening on Jan. 1, 2024. The sewer rates will remain unchanged in 2024.

It's already been a historic year for Akron's venerable Haunted Schoolhouse.

And for the first time in 50 years, the haunt will open its doors for a unique Christmas-themed tour.

The old Thomastown Elementary School on Akron's Triplett Boulevard plans to roll out the tinsel along with a dead body or two or three for two nights on Dec. 8 and 9.

"The elves have decked out all three floors of the Haunted Schoolhouse with lights, trees and holiday cheer galore, but the monsters and ghosts that roam these halls are not quite as jolly," the haunt posted on social media.

Wild Lights, the annual holiday event at Akron Zoo, will return for the 2023 holiday season from Nov. 24 to Dec. 29. The event features a lighting display with over one million lights, including the "Rockin' Lighted Spectacular" animated wall set to holiday music. Dates for the event are Nov. 24-26, Dec. 1-3, Dec. 8-10, Dec. 15-23, and Dec. 26-29, running from 5 to 9 p.m. Visitors can meet the Grinch, have visits with Santa until Dec. 23, and enjoy treats from Mrs. C's Sweets, including hot chocolate and coffee. Tickets can be purchased online or on the day of the event, with different pricing for members and non-members. Special "Zoothing Wild Lights" event on Dec. 7 caters to guests with different abilities, offering a quieter experience with limited tickets available.

Blossom Music Center announced on X (formerly Twitter) that concertgoers attending Live Nation shows can no longer bring personal lawn chairs. Instead, they must reserve lawn chairs through the venue in advance and pick them up on the day of the show. The policy, aimed at improving venue entry and security, does not apply to Cleveland Orchestra performances. While the venue's website still allows personal lawn chairs and mentions a rental option for non-compliant chairs, it has not yet been updated to reflect the new reservation policy, and any associated costs remain unclear.

Beginning Nov. 11, the McRib will return to Ohio McDonald’s restaurants for a limited time, according to a press release. If you don't know, a McRib is a seasoned boneless pork patty slathered in barbeque sauce and topped with slivered onions and dill pickles on a homestyle bun.

Akron's Citizens' Police Oversight Board has tabled a proposal to forego launching investigations into Akron police's internal affairs until 2025 or when a new agreement between Akron and the Fraternal Order of Police is ratified.

Member Bob Gippin said the plan was tabled during the board's retreat Saturday because there's still debate about whether the board can conduct parallel investigations while the police department or the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an inquiry and, if so, whether it's a good idea.

The Fraternal Order of Police's threats of litigation over the board's powers played a role in the tabling as well.

The LeBron James Family Foundation has announced the opening of LeBron James' Home Court at House Three Thirty on November 25, 2023. This multimedia storytelling experience is a self-guided tour featuring never-before-seen items that chronicle LeBron's life. The tour starts with a recreation of his childhood apartment, curated by his mother, Gloria James, and continues through significant milestones, including the historic Fab Five years, the 2003 NBA Draft, championship runs, and Olympic victories. The exhibit includes a gallery of fan art, original shoes, family photos, and notes from LeBron's journey. Cedar Fair, the parent company of Cedar Point and Kings Island, is merging with Six Flags Entertainment, the world's largest regional theme park operator. The goal is to create a stronger operating model and enhance revenue and cash flow. The combined company will have a diverse portfolio of assets and intellectual property, providing a wide range of entertainment experiences across 27 parks in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The merged entity will operate under the name Six Flags, with headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, and significant operations in Sandusky, Ohio. Richard Zimmerman, Cedar Fair's CEO, will lead the combined company, while Selim Bassoul of Six Flags will serve as executive chairman of the board.

Spectrum, the cable and internet company, announced a $1.25 billion investment to expand and accelerate services in Ohio. Nearly $750 million will expand Spectrum's fiberoptic network, bringing broadband to over 60 Ohio counties, including unserved areas. The investment, supplemented by nearly $200 million in federal, state, and local grants, aims to provide broadband to approximately 140,000 previously unserved homes and small businesses. Spectrum has already extended broadband to thousands of underserved locations in counties like Tuscarawas, Vinton, Muskingum, and Clinton since June. Despite this initiative, Spectrum has filed a complaint against AEP Ohio, accusing the power company of delaying applications for access to AEP poles for Spectrum wires.

Downtown Akron is set to host the WinterBlast festival, featuring the state's largest outdoor ice skating rink. The festival kicks off with the Welcome Santa Holiday Parade on November 24, followed by the Downtown Akron Partnership Tree Lighting Celebration and fireworks. The Huntington Ice Skating Rink will offer ice skating, ice bumper cars, and ice bikes from November 24 through February 19. Skating hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. The rink, temporarily relocated between the State Street bridge and Canal Park Stadium due to construction at Lock 3 park, will charge $3 for those with their own skates and $5 for skate rentals. Rentals for heated igloos and fire pits are also available for a fee.

The updated site includes interactive search functionality, quick links to popular pages, translation options in multiple languages, and an accessibility menu. A new 311 platform powered by Rock Solid is introduced for citizen service requests. Mayor Dan Horrigan emphasized the user-friendly interface, enhanced functionality, and modern design to improve resident interaction and provide a streamlined platform.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 60% chance of precipitation in the Akron area Tuesday night with a low of 28 degrees.

With a cold front moving through the area, the precipitation will likely start as rain that turns into lake-effect snow later that night, the NSW said.

Snow is expected to continue into Wednesday as well, mixing with rain after 11 a.m. before eventually tapering off as temperatures rise.

The weather service said 1-2 inches of snow is possible for the traditional snowbelt by Wednesday.

An 18-year-old former student from Kent Roosevelt High School faces a third-degree felony charge of making terroristic threats after allegedly posting a threat to blow up the school on social media. Kent police, acting on an alert from the FBI, arrested the suspect in Cuyahoga Falls. The teenager, who had posted the threat twice, claimed it was a joke, but police charged him due to the severity of the offense. The suspect was arraigned in Kent Municipal Court, where he received a $130,000 surety bond and a condition to stay away from all Kent City School property. Kent police worked swiftly with the FBI and the suspect's family to locate and apprehend him, avoiding the need for a school evacuation or search. A preliminary hearing for the case is scheduled for November 3rd. source

Project Ujima, a grassroots community engagement organization in West Akron, is initiating a series of Peace Circles to address youth violence in the city. These circles, supported by a federally funded Violence Intervention and Prevention Grant from the city of Akron, provide safe spaces for open and honest conversations. The discussions aim to build relationships, establish trust, find common ground, and transition from talk to action. The program's director, Denico Buckley-Knight, will be present for these intimate conversations. Project Ujima emphasizes the patient and effective process of the Peace Circles, designed to uncover shared concerns and foster community unity.

The discussions will be held:

• Nov. 2: 6-8 p.m. at Joy Park Community Center, 825 James Ingram Way.
• Nov 4: 10 a.m. to noon at Buchtel CLC, 1040 Copley Road.

To check your voter registration, visit the Ohio Secretary of State website's voter lookup page. From there, you can enter your name and county, and it will tell you whether you are registered to vote for the election. The page will also tell you where your polling location is and what district you reside in for voting.

On Election Day, you must cast your ballot in your precinct at your designated polling place (found on the voter registration lookup page) between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

You need to provide valid identification which can include:

• Ohio driver's license.
• State of Ohio ID card.
• Interim ID form issued by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
• A U.S. passport.
• A U.S. passport card.
• U.S. military ID card.
• Ohio National Guard ID card.
• U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs ID card.

All photo identification must have the following:

• An expiration date that has not passed.
• A photo of the voter.
• The voter’s name, which must substantially conform to their name as it appears in the poll list or in the poll book.

Akron city officials are seeking state funding, with a $9 million request to the Ohio Department of Development, to demolish five commercial structures and over 100 blighted homes. The demolition effort, accompanied by a $3 million local match, aims to address large commercial buildings and crumbling schools, with a focus on structures listed on the city's Vacant Building Registry. Among the notable commercial properties slated for demolition are the Morley Health Center, the historic Firestone Building, the Word Church on Manchester Road, and two former school properties. The initiative aligns with the city's ongoing efforts to eliminate blight, especially in lower-income neighborhoods where funds have been directed toward demolishing condemned homes since 2010. source

Bookie.com has once again donned its financial detective hat to unveil the annual sticker shock of attending an NBA game with the whole family.

They've scrutinized everything, from the wallet-slimming ticket prices to parking and even the cost of two sodas, two beers, and four hot dogs.

Brace yourselves—on average, a family will shell out a not-so-modest $304.64 to watch some hoops live this season. The wallet-wincing award goes to the New York Knicks, where the damage amounts to a jaw-dropping $745.18. But fear not, frugal fans, for the Charlotte Hornets emerge as the unsung heroes of budget ballin', offering a steal at $158.72 for a family of four.

And guess what? Their arena is the NBA's Shangri-La for beer bargains, with a pint-sized brew costing a mere $5.78, making the Cavaliers' $11.75 average look like a grand slam in the price department. As for the league's most wallet-wilting beer experience, Boston Celtics fans might need a sip of something more substantial after forking over a staggering $19.87.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are among the more affordable teams to watch play in person.

The study found a family of four can expect to pay $217.05 to take in a game with tickets, parking, beer, pop and hotdogs factored in.

Guess who just moved into Akron Zoo's hottest neighborhood? None other than the red wolf family! Meet the cool parents, Diego and Brave, and their adorable pups, Sentinel (the dashing young lad) and Sabine (the chic little miss).

The zoo's buzzing with excitement about the new residents, who've already taken residence in the red wolf habitat. The zookeepers have even rolled out the red carpet, or rather, window coverings, to give the family some privacy as they settle into their plush new digs.

It's like the wolf version of MTV Cribs, with a touch of class. The zoo had temporarily closed the red wolf habitat for a little summer makeover, expanding the pup paradise for future wolf generations. Move over, Kardashians; the red wolf family is the new reality show on the block!

Netflix is offering free screenings on selected area screens for their new animated film “Leo,” starring Adam Sandler. 

Screenings will be held the weekend of Nov. 11-12 at Cinemark Tinseltown in North Canton and Cinemark Valley View. Tickets can be downloaded at LeoSneakPeek.com.

From the press release, it seems that Sandler is up to Sandler-like hijinks, voicing a 74-year-old lizard who is a class pet and has been, for decades, witnessing more runny noses than he can remember. He learns he has a year left to live and plots to escape.

Akron has been designated a Regional Technology and Innovation Hub by the U.S. Department of Commerce, making it eligible for up to $70 million in federal funding. U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown announced the selection from 31 hubs chosen out of nearly 400 applicants. Akron's hub will leverage its historical leadership in the rubber industry to pioneer the production of sustainable polymers, representing the next generation of rubber and plastics. The city will compete with other hubs for awards ranging from $20 million to $70 million, with five to ten hubs set to receive funding based on their development plans. Alongside the hub designation, Akron has been granted a $400,000 strategy development grant for the University of Akron and the Greater Akron Chamber, aimed explicitly at sustainable polymers.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center suggests that Ohio may experience milder temperatures resembling those of the Carolinas in the upcoming winter months.

The forecast attributes this change to the presence of El Niño during the winter season. Long-term weather pattern predictors anticipate a 40-50% chance of warmer-than-usual temperatures in December, January, and February, especially in Central and Northern Ohio. Southern Ohio also has a 33-40% chance of experiencing temperatures above the average for this period.

Wayside Furniture is presenting a special event featuring free screenings of two cherished Christmas films, "Elf" and "The Polar Express," at the Akron Civic Theatre on December 10, 2023. Attendees will also enjoy complimentary popcorn.

The city suggests residents rake leaves into the street one day before the scheduled pick-up day, according to the program website.

Leaves should be no more than two feet from the curb or edge of the street.

No vehicle should be parked on the street when crews begin working, and no vehicles should be parked on piles of leaves. Any vehicles left in the street can be towed or fined.

To make leaf collection more efficient, the city also asks residents not to place branches and other debris in the street as crews will pick up leaf-only piles. Bags of leaves will not be picked up. To arrange a bag collection, call 311 for a sanitation bulk pickup.

Lowe's Outlet Store opened in early October; the Cuyahoga Falls location is one of the home improvement chain's 14 outlet stores in the nation. The store features new items that have minor to moderate damage, discontinued and slightly used items.

The Lowe's Outlet includes warranty options, with delivery, and haul-away options available, Snow said. Patrons with a Lowe's credit card can use the cards at the outlet store as well.

However, those looking for a discounted appliance or other items must come to the store directly, Snow added. Online purchases are not available for the outlet store, and items can't be ordered to the outlet. Those services, Snow said, must be done through the regular Lowe's retail stores.

"Every day we get new stuff," Snow said.

While we haven't voted yet officially, Shammas Malik has begun accepting applications to be a part of his incoming administration.

In posts on Facebook and Instagram, the transition team called for applicants for director of economic development, director of human resources, director of law, director of planning and a new position in the city's structure — director of sustainability and resiliency. The posts also invite people to send resumes if they wish to be considered for other roles not specifically mentioned.
