The Alabama Freshwater Fishing report is your best resource for the Lake Guntersville Fishing Report, Weiss Lake Fishing Report, Lake Eufaula Fishing Report, Mobile Tensaw Delta Fishing Report, and all the creeks, rivers, and reservoirs in between.
This week on the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report we’ve got a special guest segment with Josh Gunter, owner of Mount Vernon Outdoors and Steel Creek Bait & Tackle.
Josh shares his lifelong history fishing the upper Delta and Tombigbee side, growing up on Gunnison Creek where he cut his teeth fishing everything from bass to crappie and bream. He talks about how the area shaped him as a tournament angler and why he still believes the Tombigbee side holds bigger fish, better numbers, and less pressure compared to other parts of the Delta. Josh also explains the unique fishing culture in that region, including how anglers there target bream on bottom with split shot rigs, the difference between white and black crappie growth, and why spinnerbaits and old-school lures like the Snagless Sally still carry a cult following.
We also dive into Josh’s journey of transforming a small hardware store into Mount Vernon Outdoors, a full-service bait and tackle shop designed to serve local anglers. He reflects on the importance of supporting local shops, sharing how they provide not just gear but also the irreplaceable knowledge and sense of community that box stores can’t match. Josh explains how stocking the right lures and colors for his part of the Delta makes a huge difference, and why anglers should always visit a local tackle shop when fishing new waters.
Beyond fishing, Josh and Nick discuss the growing community involvement around water quality and access in North Mobile County. Josh helped spearhead a Baykeeper town hall in Mount Vernon, raising awareness of issues like sedimentation, high water, and the challenges of limited access points upstream. He emphasizes that what happens upstream in Alabama inevitably impacts the Delta and the Bay, and that anglers need to be part of the conversation.
The episode also covers the emerging catfish scene in the upper Delta. Josh describes how local anglers are beginning to adopt trolling techniques with planer boards and slinky-style drag weights, a method he first learned from King Kat pros. He shares stories of big blue cats being caught — including fish over 100 pounds — and how this could open the door to more catfish tournaments in the region. The conversation rounds out with talk of seasonal transitions, how the fall bite can outshine spring in the upper Delta, and how Mount Vernon Outdoors is gearing up to serve both anglers and hunters as the season shifts.
