The Government Law Center presents its first Warren M. Anderson Series Seminar of 2021 focusing on the implementation of the Governor’s Executive Order 203, which requires municipalities with police forces to “reform and reinvent” policing. 

The program will explain what is expected under the terms of the order, examine some of the difficult issues that municipalities face as they undertake this effort, and report on how municipalities are progressing as they approach the order’s April 1 deadline.

The program aims to increase diversity in the legal profession in the Rochester area by attracting qualified first-year law students from under-represented groups within the legal profession to work in paid positions with Rochester area law firms and other legal employers.

COVID-19 has upended the workplace as we know it. 

Experts widely speculate that we’ve fast-forwarded in the direction of working remotely by a decade or more. But what exactly does this mean? 

Is the future of work primarily virtual, and if so, what challenges does this entail? What is the new role of the physical workspace? 

As business leaders collectively answer these questions in the coming weeks and months, this presentation explores the most likely post-pandemic outcome of the “hybrid workplace," in which more employees work from home more of the time. We will focus on the novel questions and challenges this raises for human resources professionals, employment attorneys, and the business leaders they advise.

Nina A. Kohn, a visiting professor of law at Yale Law School and the David M. Levy Professor of Law at Syracuse University College of Law, delivered the lecture - Aging and Civil Rights - on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021.

Kohn’s research and teaching focus on elder law and the civil rights of older adults and persons with diminished cognitive capacity. Her scholarly work addresses issues in family caregiving, supported and surrogate decision-making, financial exploitation of the elderly, vulnerability and discrimination in old age, the practical and constitutional implications of elder abuse legislation, and the potential for an elder rights movement.

The lecture was presented by the Elder Rights Pro Bono Project through the Justice Center at Albany Law School, the Government Law Center, and the Albany Government Law Review.

We are speaking with Brianna Vaughan '17 today about her early career as an Assistant District Attorney in Nassau County (she is currently a clerk with the Nassau County Board of Election) and her candidacy for Village Justice in her hometown of Hempstead.

In this very special podcast, and as part of Black History Month, we listen in on an oral history of the life of Peter Pryor '54.

Pryor was a World War II veteran and the first African-American to graduate from Albany Law School since the Reconstruction era. 

He went on to a celebrated career as a civil rights attorney and in public service, working in several capacities under New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. A prominent civic affairs leader, Pryor founded the Albany Urban League and served as president and general counsel of the Albany chapter of the NAACP. 

He was a trustee emeritus at Albany Law School and Siena College. 

He is a recipient of Albany Law School's Distinguished Service Award. 

In 2015, the Capital District Black and Hispanic Bar Association created the Peter M. Pryor Pioneer Award to honor his life and work.
