Welcome to Album Clash! This week we bring to a close the first stop on our musical road trip (redux), saying goodbye to the Seattle grunge scene by going through a little known album called ‘Nevermind’ by three precocious young chaps called Nirvana.

Yep, it’s the album that arguably defined a generation. And, as you might expect when reviewing such a cultural behemoth, there’s quite a bit for us to get into with this one. Such as how the album’s huge sound was developed, how the band drew inspiration from numerous acts who in turn went on to achieve greater success themselves on the back of ‘Nevermind’ becoming a global smash. We also have a big old chat about how a number of bands on the other side of the Atlantic took note of what Nirvana were doing and used it to start their own cultural revolution…

In this week’s video killed the radio star Kev talks us through a video which combines three of our favourite things: old children’s television programmes, dated pop culture references, and Radiohead. And Kev’s choice for album of the pod is the latest effort from one of psychedelic rock’s most criminally underrated acts.

Welcome to Album Clash! Not only is it new clash week but it’s also new season week, as we fire up the RV and recommence our musical road trip! First stop on the second leg of our tour of famous musical cities is Seattle, a hitherto unremarkable city in the US Pacific Northwest until the late summer of 1991 when it became the musical epicentre of the world with the explosion of grunge. And we have a veritable clash of the titans as we pit Pearl Jam’s debut album ‘Ten’ against Nirvana’s breakout smash, ‘Nevermind’.

First up this week it’s the turn of Eddie Vedder and chums as we cast our eye over the album which made Pearl Jam a household name, even outselling ‘Nevermind’ in the US. And boy do we have quite a bit to talk about - such as how Pearl Jam grew out of the tragic demise of one of the early pioneers of the Seattle scene, how Eddie Vedder drew on his personal experiences of growing up to write some incredibly dark and emotive lyrics, and the surprising way in which the band felt about the finished album…

In our latest ‘can’t get you out of my head’ feature Tim explains how the choice of background music in a hotel bar made sure he didn’t spend all night supping whisky.

Welcome to Album Clash! We start a new clash this week, and to bring our live albums season to a close we have an absolute corker, as two soul legends James Brown and Otis Redding go head to head to find out who comes out on top.

First up it’s James Brown, with his 1963 breakthrough ‘Live at the Apollo’ - another of those albums which regularly features towards the top of ‘best live albums’ lists, and set the stage for JB to become the Godfather of Soul.

Despite the unusual brevity of this week’s pod there’s still plenty of us to get through as Tim reveals the lengths to which James Brown went to get this album made, and how some of the contributing artists felt sidelined by their lack of billing on the album. As ever when we go through a live album there’s some interesting track choices to get into and, in a rare outbreak of informative content, Kev tells us the story of how James Brown averted a riot.

In the latest instalment of ‘can’t get you out of my head’ Kev explains how an online grocery order had him singing a song by one of music’s most disgraced artists (to put it mildly), and Tim gives a shout to the first new material for five years from one of the pod’s favourite bands.

We also have another round of our quickfire game ‘keep or throw’ in which Kev attempts to exact revenge for being forced to part with one of his favourite albums…

Welcome to Album Clash! Concluding our live dance albums clash, we turn this week to the godfathers of rave Orbital, and their retrospective documenting of their numerous performances at Glastonbury over the years, ingeniously titled ‘Live at Glastonbury: 1994 - 2004’.

In doing so we talk about the massive role Orbital played in bringing electronic dance music into the mainstream, not least of all with the first performance featured on this very album, and how they influenced so many of the acts that followed in their footsteps. We also talk about how Tim is a seminal figure in the recording of the album. (Because he was at one of the featured performances. Yes that does count.) We also make numerous calls back to the album which became Kev’s bête noire.

In our latest ‘video killed the radio star’ we take a look at a recent video from an artist we have previously praised on album clash, and end up talking again about one of our favourite Shane Meadows films.

Once again, dizzy on the high of our return, we decide to introduce yet another new feature to the pod, although we’re still workshopping the name.

As is our custom we compare our scores of these two albums to decide who prevails in the ring of death. And, as a rare treat for our regular listeners, we actually have some element of a debate…

Welcome to Album Clash! We start another new clash this week, and continuing our live season we take a look at two rare examples of live albums by dance acts - as into the ring of death Tim enters two acts of whom he has been desperate to speak for a long time - Underworld and Orbital.

First up it’s Underworld with their 2000 live album ‘Everything Everything’. And it’s an uncharacteristically short show this week - mainly because the album is only eight tracks in length. We still have a lot to talk about though, including (most importantly) how one of the connections between these two albums is Tim himself.

In our latest ‘can’t get you out of my head’ entry Tim explains how a night of watching Netflix had him recalling an inexplicably popular late 90s pop/punk crossover, before entering onto our playlist a song from an album that we have previously reviewed (and oft derided).

We also find the time to introduce a new feature to the show, in which Tim tricks Kev into parting ways with one of his favourite albums…

Welcome to Album Clash! In this week’s episode we conclude the second clash in our ‘live albums’ season by going through the Who’s classic 1970 album ‘Live at Leeds’.

There’s only six tracks to go through but there’s still plenty for us to get into on this album, such as how the Who’s poor administration led to what Pete Townshend refers to as the stupidest decision of his life - amazingly it’s not what you think it would be. We talk about one of the most classically simplistic album covers of all time, and we have plenty of praise to lavish on the Who’s rhythm section, while at the same time getting properly stuck into the other two (though not for their musical ability).

Tim’s pick for ‘video killed the radio star’ has us taking a sideways look at the psychedelic video to a classic Indie banger.

Welcome to Album Clash! In the latest clash in our live season we pit two ageing behemoths of the rock scene head-to-head, as the Rolling Stones take on the Who.

First up it’s the Stones, as Mick, Keith et al treat us to their 1970 live album ‘Get Yer Ya-Yas Out’, compiled from some of the gigs on their 1969 North American tour.

Among our usual meanderings we talk about how the Stones recovered from the tragic loss of Brian Jones to hit arguably their creative peak, how the album nearly featured some other quite well known artists, and how the tour ultimately came to an end in controversial circumstances (in an incident referenced in one of the most famous songs of all time).

In our latest ‘can’t get you out of my head’ segment, Kev explains how he managed to earworm himself with an early 90s country rock ‘classic’.

Welcome to Album Clash! In this week’s show we conclude the first clash in our ‘live’ season by taking a meander through David Bowie’s now legendary headline set from the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2000. And, much like the first part of this clash, there’s an awful lot of meandering to get through. Don’t blame us, blame Bowie. He’s the one who crammed 22 songs into his Glasto greatest hits set for Christ sake. And many of those songs could only very tenuously be described as ‘greatest hits’. So join us as we talk (at length) about set list composition and track placement. Marvel as we - for once- actually engage in some debate about the album we are reviewing. And sigh as Kevin abandons any and all sense of objectivity because he finally gets to talk about a Bowie album.

We get to scoring our two albums, and in doing so completely shit the bed when it comes to deciding a winner. And Kev tells us which two albums we’ll be covering in our next clash.

We also have the return of our much loved (by us at least) ‘video killed the radio star’ segment, in which Kev introduces us to a latter day Beastie Boys video which takes off from an all time classic, while cramming in just about as many Hollywood celebrities as you can name.
