Welcome to Album Clash! We bring to a close our live clash of the soul legends, and with it our live season, by casting our gaze over Otis Redding’s first live album ‘Live in Europe’ from 1967.
Released just five months before his tragic and untimely death, this album showcases everything that was great about Otis Redding, which leads us to pondering just how great a performer he could have gone on to be had he not been taken from us at the age of just 26.
We also spend a lot of time talking about Booker T and the MGs - probably as much as we do talking about Otis, in fact. To be fair, they do provide Otis’s backing on this album. And they were incredible. We get down to scoring our two albums to determine who will emerge victorious from the ring of death, and Tim reveals what theme we will be covering over the next few clashes, as well as the first two albums to go head-to-head…
In our latest ‘video killed the radio star’ feature Tim talks us through a 1999 video that was controversial at the time, and even then has not stood the test of time. And it’s Tim’s turn to choose our ‘album of the pod’, and he has the perfect pick to blow away those Autumn blues.
Also this week:
Smokey Robinson trolls Macaulay Culkin 25 years ahead of time;
we are agreed on the worst chocolate bar of all time; and
yet again on a live album we learn that at least one audience member was disappointed by the setlist choice…
This. Is. ALBUM CLASH!
***If you like what you've heard in this show, why not subscribe to the pod? You can also listen to our entire back catalogue (and with two weeks to wait between new episodes you frankly have no excuse not to). PLEASE tell your mates to check us out. Alternatively, if you think we're shite, tell your enemies to listen - we honestly don't care as long as we get those sweet sweet clicks. Finally, if you are so inclined, we would be incredibly grateful if you could give us a (preferably 5-star) rating and leave a review on whichever platform you get your pods. It makes it easier for others to find us and it means a hell of a lot. Thanks for listening!***
