We conclude our look at concert movie soundtracks this week by going through U2’s bumper 1988 album ‘Rattle and Hum’.
And boy, is there a lot for us to chew on, as we find out how the band looked to capitalise on the runaway success of ‘The Joshua Tree’ and cement their new-found status as the biggest band in the world.
We talk about how the album, and the film, started life as a simple tour documentary but quickly ballooned into a behemoth that gave us nine new songs, a major-studio movie, and a frankly Spinal Tap evoking image of Larry Mullen Jr sitting atop Elvis Presley’s motorcycle. We also find plenty of time to get stuck into Bono.
But it’s not all jokes at the band’s expense, as we also get to talk about some of U2’s most famous songs, as well as eulogise over the incredible talent that is on display throughout this album.
In this week’s ‘video killed the radio star’ Tim reminds us of a classic video from a pop legend, directed by one of Hollywood’s most revered filmmakers, which became an iconic piece of 90s pop culture despite not featuring the artist in the video itself. .
Also this week:
we talk about Bono’s murky past of petty vandalism;
Tim uses the word ‘eponymous’ in its correct context; and
we ask whether one of this album’s contributors got their share of that sweet sweet iPod money.
This. Is. ALBUM CLASH!!
